The family of the Milton man killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Quincy earlier this week spent Christmas struggling to come to terms with the tragedy, while police continued to search for the driver and the vehicle that struck him.
Paul F. Moore was three weeks past his 63d birthday when police discovered his body on the snow-covered sidewalk on Robertson Street Thursday morning with what authorities described as severe trauma to his upper torso. Moore’s five children, all in their teens or 20s, and his wife are “just beside themselves,’’ said Karen McEachern of Milton, who had been friends with Moore since they met in a North Quincy bowling league in the late 1960s.
“I think it’s just so outrageous that anybody could hit somebody and leave them there,’’ said Marti Moore of Hanover, Moore’s sister-in-law. “You know when you hit something. You know when you drive over something in the road. To hit somebody with that force and to just leave them, it’s just horrendous. I just can’t imagine anybody could be that cruel and insensitive.’’

A Quincy man turned himself in yesterday following the Christmas Eve hit-and-run that killed Paul Moore of Milton. Paul Daly, 61, contacted Quincy authorities after police and the Norfolk district attorney held a news conference Thursday. Daly was charged with motor vehicle homicide due to negligent operation, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Captain John Dougan said Daly will be arraigned in January. The reason Daly left the scene is under investigation, he said.

It was a Christmas Eve tradition: Scott Callahan would walk the half-mile to the Methuen VFW post to wish the veterans a Merry Christmas, his family said. This year, the walk turned fatal.
A Springfield man, allegedly driving drunk with a revoked license, hit and killed Callahan, 51, late Thursday night and fled the scene on foot, police said. Authorities arrested Arturo Cruz Jr., 29, hours after the tragic accident.
“Instead of a festive mood today, it’s somber,’’ the victim’s sister, Diana Coates of Dracut, said through tears yesterday morning. “We’re planning funeral arrangements instead of exchanging gifts.’’

The official added that additional security measures are being taken without raising the airline threat level.

The mistake was known almost immediately, but the media momentum to blame the "attack" on North Vietnam was already underway and there was no internet to force a correction.
