Federal authorities yesterday formally charged Boston Scientific Corp. with criminal violations in connection with faulty reports made by its Guidant heart-device unit to the Food and Drug Administration.

The charges were filed in a US district court in St. Paul, nearly three months after Boston Scientific reached a $296 million agreement with the Department of Justice to settle a long-running investigation into problems with Guidant’s implantable defibrillators. Both sides described yesterday’s action as part of the settlement process, noting they have signed a plea agreement that will be filed with the court at a later date....

Earlier this month, it said it plans to eliminate 1,000 to 1,300 jobs worldwide....
