British passports are the property of the British government. When that government says and does nothing for six days after it was given evidence that Mossad agents stole the identity of six British citizens to assassinate a Hamas commander in Dubai, it starts to seem as if Israel was right to think it could get away with it. The Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, yesterday predicted the incident would have no effect on British relations....
Mossad agents routinely use false identities and forged western passports, and each time they are caught doing it Israel gives assurances they will not do it again. It did so to Britain when the issue came up in 1987. Ten years later it gave the same assurances to Canada, after Mossad agents entered Jordan on doctored Canadian passports and bungled an attempt to kill the Hamas leader Khaled Meshal with poison. Two suspected Israeli agents were jailed in New Zealand for obtaining the country's passports illegally. These diplomatic assurances are evidently worthless.
The only thing that will give Mossad pause for thought the next time it eyes a target for assassination is if its political masters are made to feel the consequences of its actions....
The Mossad operation was described in Israel yesterday as a tactical operational success. There was relief that the right target was killed, and all Israel's operatives got out safely. Israel is not the only country to carry out targeted assassinations. The US pursue the same policy....

Still, there was praise for the Dubai operation from some analysts who noted the major difference between it and the Mashaal case is that the latter failed and the former achieved its goal - assassination of a Hamas leader.

“Al-Mabhouh is dead and all the partners to the operation left Dubai safely,’’ wrote analyst Ronen Bergman of the Yediot Ahronot newspaper.
Critics slammed the Mossad, not for killing al-Mabhouh on foreign territory but for doing it sloppily and endangering Israeli citizens in the process.

A front-page commentary in Israel’s Haaretz daily by defense analyst Amir Oren called for the ouster of Mossad director Meir Dagan.
“What is needed now is a swift decision to terminate Dagan’s contract and to appoint a new Mossad chief,’’ he wrote. “There’s no disease without a cure.’’

Dubai authorities released names, photos, and passport numbers of 11 members of the alleged hit squad this week, saying all 11 carried European passports. But most of the identities appeared to have been stolen, and at least seven matched up with people in Israel who say they are victims of identity theft.

Some senior Israeli security officials not directly involved in the case were less circumspect, saying they were convinced it was a Mossad operation because of the motive - and the use of Israeli citizens’ identities.
And that is their own people!
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a government order not to discuss the case, characterized the operation as a significant Mossad bungle.

If it develops into a full-blown security scandal, that could harm Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu politically.

Two Mossad agents posing as Canadian tourists were captured after injecting Mashaal with poison, and Israel was forced to send an antidote that saved Mashaal’s life.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Dubai’s police chief said yesterday an 11-member hit squad with European passports was responsible for killing a Hamas commander in his hotel room last month, but he did not directly implicate Israel as the Islamic militant group has.
The Gulf emirate released photos, names, nationalities, and passport numbers of all 11 suspects.
The details given by Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim are the most comprehensive accusations by Dubai authorities since the body of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was found Jan. 20 in his luxury hotel room near Dubai’s international airport.
Tamim said it was possible that “leaders of certain countries gave orders to their intelligence agents’’ to kill Mabhouh, one of the founders of Hamas’ military wing. But he did not name any countries.
Hamas has accused Israel and vowed revenge.
Tamim sketched out a highly organized operation in the hours before the killing, clearly done with advance knowledge of the victim’s movements, and said the killers spent less than a day in the country. He said forensic tests indicate Mabhouh died of suffocation, but lab analyses are still underway to pinpoint possible other factors in his death.

He showed a news conference surveillance video of the alleged assassination team arriving on separate flights to Dubai the day before Mabhouh was found dead.

The members of the alleged hit squad checked into separate hotels.

The case - as presented by Dubai authorities - rings of clockwork espionage and detailed planning that included suspects riding the same elevator as Mahmoud al-Mabhouh before he was slain in an ambush-style attack in a luxury hotel room.
But questions emerged about the list of suspects after authorities released pictures, names, and passport photos identifying them as six Britons, three Irish, and one each from France and Germany. Ireland said the three alleged Irish citizens on the wanted list do not exist. In Germany, officials said the passport number for the German suspect is either incomplete or wrong.
At least three people who live in Israel share names with suspects identified by Dubai police, Israel’s Channel 2 news reported. Another suspect holds dual British-Israeli citizenship. Those connections are likely to encourage Hamas and others to press their claims that Israel’s Mossad secret service masterminded the slaying....

Lieberman did not deny outright Israeli involvement in the killing of Hamas's Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel, saying only that Israel has a "policy of ambiguity" on intelligence matters and there was no proof it was behind the assassination.
