"Teacher guilty of murdering 8-year-old; other charges dropped" by Associated Press | May 11, 2010

TRACY, Calif. — A Sunday school teacher accused of kidnapping, raping, and killing an 8-year-old playmate of her daughter, then stuffing the body in a suitcase, pleaded guilty yesterday to murder.

Melissa Huckaby, 29, entered the plea to a charge of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of kidnapping. As part of a deal with prosecutors, all other charges were dropped.

The surprise plea came during what was scheduled to be a routine pretrial hearing. The initial charges would have made her eligible for the death penalty if convicted. Her trial had been set to begin in October. Huckaby now faces 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole when she is sentenced June 14.

You know the mood I'm in this morning, readers.

Why waste the space?

Authorities say Huckaby killed Sandra Cantu in March 2009. A search ended after 10 days when the body was found in a suitcase pulled from a pond a few miles from the mobile home park where both the child and the defendant lived.

Huckaby also had been charged with previously drugging a 7-year-old girl and a 37-year-old man, whom police believe she had been dating. Those charges also were dropped in the plea deal.

Let the blade fly, folks!

Judge Linda Lofthus maintained the gag order that she imposed in the case last year, according to a Tracy police spokesman.

Attorneys in the case did not return calls seeking comment. Angie Chavez, Sandra’s aunt and the spokeswoman for the Cantu family, declined to comment, citing the gag order.

Just as at the time of the arrest, police stood guard yesterday at the entrance to the mobile home park where Cantu and Huckaby lived.

Susan Alley, 50, said she has lived in the park for nearly four years. She said she was glad to hear of Huckaby’s plea and said neighbors only recently have started to feel comfortable.

But don't take the law into your own hands.

You take 'em court!

"Patrol pilot killed in aircraft crash

IMPERIAL — A highway patrol pilot flying to monitor freeway speeders was killed when his aircraft crashed in southern California, officials said yesterday. Officer Danny Benavides, 39, was flying solo when his plane went down Friday in a desert area near Highway 78 and Split Mountain Road in Imperial County, the patrol said in a news release. It said the patrol communication center lost contact with the pilot and called for a regional search that involved both military and law enforcement personnel (AP)."

"2 moderate quakes hit Southern Calif." by Associated Press | May 10, 2010

SAN DIEGO — A pair of moderate earthquakes and several smaller ones rattled Southern California’s San Diego and Imperial counties yesterday as a stream of seismic activity continues a month after a major Easter earthquake ravaged the region. There were no reports of new damage or injuries....

Saturday’s quakes were among the biggest aftershocks yet after the magnitude-7.2 quake that struck southeast of Mexicali, Mexico, on April 4, killing two people. That quake caused an estimated $91 million in damage in California, primarily in Calexico, where some schools and other public buildings in the economically ailing area remained closed more than a month later.

On Friday, President Obama signed a disaster declaration to free federal funding to help the state and local governments with repairs and recovery. The quake damaged homes, a dozen schools, hospitals, wastewater facilities, roads, and a canal that carries Colorado River water to the agricultural region and serves up to 35 percent of the population of Imperial County.

Great, just what we need: more pressure on the food supply.

FLASHBACK:

"Swarm of quakes shakes San Diego area" by ASSOCIATED PRESS | April 12, 2010

SAN DIEGO — A cluster of moderate earthquakes near the US-Mexico border continued to rattle southern San Diego County one week after a magnitude-7.2 quake slammed the area....

Scientists say the increased seismic activity is normal following the magnitude-7.2 earthquake April 4. Officials say the Easter quake killed two people and caused an estimated $100 million in damage in California alone. That temblor was the third strong quake to roil the Americas this year, after a magnitude-7 quake in Haiti killed 300,000 people and a magnitude-8.8 temblor in Chile killed 450.
