Occupation Iraq: In No Hurry

To leave, Americans.

"some form of continued US military presence.... several more years....  military help without a formal troop presence.... a small number of military trainers and private contractors.... “They shouldn’t be in a hurry with the withdrawal.’’"

So what are they going to change the name to now?

Operation Coffee Break?

"Biden, Maliki reiterate US withdrawal; But Iraqi leader sees need for a long partnership" by Liz Sly, Washington Post / January 14, 2011

BAGHDAD — Vice President Joe Biden said that a democratic and prosperous Iraq would be “the single most significant strategic thing that could happen to the United States in this region.’’

Joe's a Neo-Con.

**********

Iraqi military commanders have said they would prefer at least some form of continued US military presence, and US commanders say Iraq’s security forces will need help with training and logistics for several more years....

US officials say they are now exploring ways of providing military help without a formal troop presence, with the State Department expected to play a lead role in overseeing a small number of military trainers and private contractors....

Translation: The CIA will be overseeing the operation.

As Biden began his meetings yesterday, three small bombs exploded in Baghdad, killing two and wounding 11 in a reminder of the security challenges that remain, despite a dramatic decline in violence in recent years.

Good thing there is no more combat for U.S. troo....

"3 US soldiers killed; 2 by Iraqi trooper

BAGHDAD — Two US soldiers were killed by an Iraqi trooper who opened fire during a training exercise yesterday, raising fresh concerns about Iraq’s security forces as Americans prepare to withdraw from the country. Another soldier was killed yesterday during a military operation in central Iraq. The exercise in Mosul was a final drill to showcase US efforts to train Iraqi forces before a visit tomorrow by top US and Iraqi generals (AP)."

Yeah, the Afghans are doing the same thing.

Message: They don't want us there.

But we have to stay because of "Al-CIA-Duh!"

"Iraq suicide bomb kills 52, highlights security doubts; Attack on police line fuels worries about US pullout" by Lara Jakes, Associated Press / January 19, 2011

BAGHDAD — A suicide bomber killed 52 people among a crowd of police recruits in Saddam Hussein’s hometown yesterday, shattering a two-month lull in major attacks and spurring calls to keep the US military in Iraq beyond 2011....

And CUI BONO, 'eh?

The violence underscores persistent gaps in the security forces’ ability to protect the country, despite seven years and $22 billion in training and equipment provided by the United States....

A statement posted on a militant website by the Islamic State of Iraq, an Al Qaeda front group, praised the bombing as a suicide martyrdom but stopped short of claiming responsibility....

Yeah, well, which "Al-CIA-Duh" would that be, huh?

The made-up "Al-CIA-Duh?"

Or the "Al-CIA-Duh" CREATION for the COURTROOM!?

Local politicians blamed Al Qaeda....

Falah al-Naqaeeb, a lawmaker who has been nominated by the Sunni-dominated Iraqiya political coalition to be Iraq’s next defense minister, said attacks may spike if US forces leave Iraq at the end of the year.

“The Iraqi security forces need the expertise from the Americans,’’ he said. “They shouldn’t be in a hurry with the withdrawal.’’

"Dozens killed in assaults on Iraqi pilgrims; Shi’ites on way to shrine slain by car bombs" by John Leland, New York Times / January 21, 2011

BAGHDAD — Suicide bombers launched a series of deadly assaults yesterday against pilgrims marching toward a shrine sacred to Shi’ite Muslims, the police said, and dozens were killed in a third straight day of attacks against an array of targets.

The annual pilgrimage, which was banned under Saddam Hussein, is expected to draw as many as 10 million people this year to the city of Karbala over 10 days. It has been long a target of sectarian violence.

Who is Bombing in Iraq? Are the bombers Al-Qaeda, the CIA or Israel?

How about you, readers? You buyin' the AmeriKan media BS?

Until this week, the holiday had been free of major bloodshed, and Iraqi security forces had claimed progress in their ability to protect the populace from violent extremist groups.

That progress evaporated yesterday as three car bombs along the roads leading to Karbala, about 60 miles south of Baghdad, killed at least 52 people and wounded 150, according to an official with the Iraqi police.

The three cars were parked near police checkpoints and exploded at roughly the same time, despite heightened security along the route.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks, which resembled previous assaults attributed to Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia or an affiliated group, the Islamic State of Iraq....

I notice they always get active just as we are on our way out the door.

Hussein Sadhan, a member of Karbala’s provincial council: “We are expecting more attacks by Al Qaeda because the pilgrims are open and easy to target, while Al Qaeda is invisible.’’

********

Hakim al-Zamili, a member of Parliament allied with the Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, criticized the country’s security forces. “The checkpoints are not really checking in a precise way,’’ he said. “After seven years the same attacks and breaches happen again and again, and they don’t learn their lessons from it.’’

Zamili reiterated statements offering the security forces help from the armed wing of Sadr’s supporters. But he added that “there is sensitivity in this matter,’’ alluding to the prior deadly clashes between Sadr’s Mahdi army and both Americans and other Iraqis.

“Our leader Moqtada said before on many occasions that we are ready to help in protecting the pilgrims and the holy shrines at no charge,’’ Zamili said, “but they say that we are a militia and we are irregulars. But the truth is we are not.’’

The head of Karbala’s provincial council, Muhammad al-Mosawi, said it was unfair to blame the security forces, adding that he thought Al Qaeda and former members of Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Party were behind the attacks on the pilgrimage....

That LIE DIDN'T WORK BEFORE the INVASION, and it AIN'T WORKING NOW!

Overall, violence in Iraq is down from previous years, but this week there have been three consecutive days of major attacks on both Iraq security forces and Shi’ite pilgrims, raising fears that extremist groups were regaining some of the deadly capabilities that terrorized the country in 2006 and 2007....

What IDIOT "terrorists!"

Also in Iraq yesterday, a suicide car bomb exploded outside the police headquarters in Baquba, the troubled capital of Diyala Province, killing three people and injuring 27, according to the spokesman for the Diyala police, Ghalib al-Karkhi.

Among the dead was a journalist, Wejdan Assad, from a local weekly newspaper whose name translates as The Future of Iraq. The wounded included 12 police officers, Karkhi said.

"Militia chief held in pilgrim attacks

BAGHDAD — Iraqi police arrested the local leader of a government-backed Sunni Muslim militia on charges of planning the deadly bombings on Shi’ite pilgrims last week, Iraqi officials said yesterday. If the Awakening Council leader is found guilty, it would affirm government doubts about integrating the Sunni fighters into the nation’s security forces (Boston Globe January 23 2011)."

"A series of bombs in and around the Iraqi capital killed 10 people yesterday. The three-hour spate of explosions began around 7 a.m. in Baghdad’s rush hour at the start of the local workweek. No group immediately claimed responsibility....

Who could be doing such things?

"Iraqi terror suspects use disguises to escape jail" by Associated Press / January 15, 2011

BAGHDAD — A dozen terror suspects disguised in police uniforms broke out of an Iraqi jail yesterday, prompting a manhunt across the nation’s south for what officials called a dangerous group of top-ranking insurgents linked to Al Qaeda....

Are you sure they were in disguise?

The 12 suspects were awaiting trial when they obtained the police uniforms and walked out of the small, temporary detention center in one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces before dawn in the port city of Basra, said three Iraqi security officials.

Iraqi authorities immediately set up checkpoints on two major northbound highways to stop cars....

The 12 were the only detainees held at the palace’s makeshift jail. Intelligence officers had recently finished an investigation into their suspected ties to the Islamic State of Iraq, which is linked to Al Qaeda.

Have you had enough "CIA-Duh?

"It’s not clear how the detainees got the police uniforms. One intelligence official said authorities were looking into whether they had inside help from guards.

You mean it was an INSIDE JOB?

Also yesterday, anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr held talks with President Jalal Talabani as part of Sadr’s push to gain credibility in Iraq’s political and religious circles since returning from voluntary exile.

He's ALREADY GOT CREDIBILITY!

He's the one that CROWNED Maliki!!
