"Fish getting frisky at the aquarium" by Billy Baker |  Globe Staff, February 14, 2014

There is love in the water at the New England Aquarium.

Eight months after the aquarium finished a $17 million renovation of its centerpiece Giant Ocean Tank, the fish inside have given their new home the ultimate stamp of approval: They have gotten frisky.

Right now, the aquarium is experiencing an unprecedented and sustained burst in courtship and mating behavior among the 100-plus species inside the tank.

Steve Bailey, the curator of fishes, said, “Reproduction does not happen until a whole lot more important questions have been answered, like ‘Am I getting my butt kicked by other fish?’ ‘Is the water good?’ and ‘Am I getting enough food?’ ”

All over the tank, fish large and small can be seen guarding eggs, which means chasing off predators and trying their best to scare away the aquarium divers as they make their daily rounds. The defensive behavior is often the best way for the aquarium staff to know who has recently laid eggs since much of the “boinkulation,” as Bailey likes to call it, happens after lights out.

The spike in mating is attributed to a complex variety of factors, but the short answer is that the Caribbean coral reef inside the exhibit is a much more sophisticated ecosystem replication than its predecessor in the old tank. The new reef, which features three times the soft and hard coral features of its predecessor, has more places for fish to hide, set up territories, and partner up.

“There’s a lot of romance in here,” Bailey said. “It’s like a soap opera.”

"Arlington police arrest man, 21, in alleged indecent assault on 14-year-old" by Jennifer Smith / Globe Correspondent / February 13, 2014

A Medford man has been arrested for an alleged indecent assault an Arlington 14-year-old as she made her way home from school on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Arlington police arrested Patrick Barry, 21, at home on Wednesday after reviewing his probationary GPS log and finding that he matched the description given by the student....

The victim told police that the attack happened at about 3:30 p.m., according to police spokesman John Guilfoil, when a man came up from behind and inappropriately touched her at Summer and Mill streets.

The youth was not physically injured, and had pushed the man away and called police from home.

Police distributed a sketch of the perpetrator on Tuesday. The attacker was reportedly a white man in his early 20s, with gelled hair and mirrored glasses, according to a description released by police.

Joseph Jackson Jr., the Chief Probation Officer for the Commonwealth, told Arlington police Wednesday morning that a man on probation who was monitored by GPS matched the description of the suspect, police said.

Officers used Barry’s GPS log to place him at the exact location of the assault at that time....

"$1m bail set for man accused of assaulting teen" by Jacqueline Tempera |  Globe correspondent, February 15, 2014

A Medford man was being held on high bail Friday on a charge that he attacked a 14-year-old girl as she walked home from school in Arlington this week, Middlesex County prosecutors said.

Patrick Barry, 21, is being held on $1 million cash bail, said Middlesex district attorney’s spokeswoman MaryBeth Long....

“A dangerous offender is off the streets today,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement....

At his arraignment Friday morning, Barry was ordered to stay away from the victim and her family.

His bail was revoked in open cases out of Suffolk County, Long said.

Barry was indicted on two counts of assault with intent to rape in July after he allegedly attacked two women near Northeastern University, said Jake Wark, spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney.

"The city’s top police official placed four officers on paid leave Thursday and recommended discipline for those officers and three more in the death of a woman in custody early last year.

In a letter sent Thursday to police personnel, Superintendent William M. Taylor said department employees displayed “conduct which could be described as deliberate indifference” in Alyssa Brame’s January 2013 death by alcohol poisoning.

Brame, 31, had been arrested hours earlier on a charge of soliciting prostitution, authorities said....

Officers found at fault in the death could lose their jobs....

I doubt they will. Tragic accident.
