"Princess Cristina testifies in Spain fraud case; Inquiry could further tarnish image of royals" by Alan Clendenning |  Associated Press, February 09, 2014

PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain — In a historic judicial hearing that could further impact the deteriorated image of Spain’s monarchy, Princess Cristina testified Saturday in a fraud and money laundering case in which she and her husband could eventually be charged.

Judge Jose Castro will rule on whether Cristina, the first Spanish royal to be questioned in court since the monarchy was restored in 1975, illegally used funds from a company she owned with her husband for personal expenses, including lavish parties at their Barcelona mansion.

This while Spain has what, 25% unemployment and is in the throes of au$terity?

Hundreds of protesters blew whistles, revved motorcycle engines, honked car horns, and chanted ‘‘Out with the Spanish crown!’’ near the back entrance of the island courthouse where Cristina was dropped off in a modest hatchback.

She briefly smiled and said ‘‘good morning’’ to a mob of journalists. Castro summoned her after naming her as a fraud and money laundering suspect.

The closed-door session, which lasted nearly seven hours, was a key step in determining whether she will be charged, but a final decision could take months.

The use, or suspected abuse, of company funds to cover household expenses at the Barcelona home is among evidence Castro has compiled about Aizoon, the real estate and consulting firm Cristina co-owned with her husband.

Castro has referred to Aizoon in court paperwork as a ‘‘front company.’’

A lawyer representing an organization called Frente Civico, which has brought independent accusations against the princess, told reporters during a recess that Cristina seemed calm and well prepared.

But Manuel Delgado also said Cristina was evasive and at times exercised a right not to admit facts that could hurt her defense.

Delgado declined to comment on Castro’s questions, but said the princess told the judge ‘‘she had great confidence in her husband.’’

"Spanish princess is tax fraud suspect" by Ciaran Giles |  Associated Press, January 08, 2014

MADRID — A Spanish court on Tuesday subpoenaed Princess Cristina, the daughter of Spain’s King Juan Carlos, as a suspect in an investigation of alleged tax fraud and money laundering — the latest blow to the royal family’s reputation.

I'm so sick of "reputation," imagery, and illusion dominating the pri$m through which the world is presented to me.

Jose Castro, the Palma de Mallorca court investigating magistrate, ordered the 48-year-old princess to appear March 8 for questioning about her partnership with her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, in a firm called Aizoon.

Urdangarin is already under investigation for allegedly using his position to embezzle several million dollars in public contracts assigned to the Noos Institute, a supposedly nonprofit foundation he set up, and channel the funds to other business, among them Aizoon.

Wow, $pain is rife with the $tuff, too!

Last year, the court canceled a subpoena for the princess to answer questions about the Noos case but said she could still be called to answer questions regarding possible tax fraud and money laundering as the investigation proceeded.

The 2013 summons had been a first for a member of the king’s immediate family.

Neither the princess nor her husband has been formally charged with any crime. Any charges would come at the end of the investigation if the investigating magistrate decides there is sufficient evidence for a trial, court spokeswoman Maria Ferrer said.

"Burglar points Spanish police at abuse suspect" Associated Press, December 20, 2013

MADRID — Spanish police said a burglar has helped them arrest a soccer coach they believe sexually abused some boys he trained.

Police said the burglar, who hid his identity from the police, called to say that he had found videotapes during a robbery showing the abuse. He said he would leave the evidence under a parked car.

After viewing the videos, police tracked down the coach and arrested him.

Police records revealed the suspect reported a break-in, saying a burglar had stolen electronic equipment but failing to mention a video camera and the tapes.

Police said in a statement Thursday they had identified four victims who had suffered abuse for up to six years.

"Gunmen kill 6 police escorting Spanish cyclist" by Abdul Sattar and Riaz Khan |  Associated Press , January 23, 2014

QUETTA, Pakistan — Gunmen opened fire on Pakistani police escorting a Spanish cyclist through a volatile province bordering Iran on Wednesday, killing six officers and wounding the Spaniard, said officials.

The cyclist, whose blog said he was trying to cycle around the world, had just arrived from Iran.

He arrived in the town of Dalbandin on Tuesday evening after biking from the Iranian border, said the provincial home secretary, Asadur Rehman Gilani.

Local authorities asked him to stay overnight out of concern for his safety and then arranged a police escort of more than a dozen officers to take him to Quetta on Wednesday morning, Gilani said.

When they were in the Mastung district, about 45 miles from Quetta, the gunmen opened fire.
