Old Fool in Arlington

"An Arlington man in his 70s was allegedly robbed on Tuesday of cash and his car during an encounter with another man half his age whom he met on Craigslist and who he allowed to handcuff and blindfold him before the theft, police said. The victim, whom authorities did not identify, reported the theft from his Spy Pond Parkway residence at about 2 p.m., Arlington police said in a statement. Police said the victim had picked up the suspect at the Alewife MBTA station after meeting him on Craigslist, a website that is often used to set up casual encountersWhen they reached the victim’s house, the suspect apparently blindfolded and handcuffed him before making off with cash and the victim’s 2008 Ford Edge, police said. “A preliminary investigation indicates that ... the handcuffs and blindfold were consensual,” police said. Police later found the victim’s Ford Edge near the Alewife T stop, and investigators believe the suspect may have boarded a train from the area. An Arlington police spokesman said he was unsure how much cash the suspect stole or if anything was missing from the vehicle when it was found. “This does not appear to be a random act of violence, and we do not want residents to be in fear for their safety,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in the statement. “We are actively investigating this incident.” Officials described the suspect as a tall white man, approximately 30 to 35 years old, who had a tattoo on his neck and was last seen wearing Boston Celtics attire. He weighed about 200 pounds, police said."

"An Arlington man who had allegedly handcuffed another man with his permission, but then robbed him and stole his car earlier this week, was arrested Friday on a shoplifting charge, Burlington police said. Steven O’Brien, 25, allegedly met a man on the Internet who picked him up from the MBTA’s Alewife Station and brought him to his residence on Spy Pond Parkway. With the victim’s consent, O’Brien handcuffed and blindfolded the victim, who is in his 70s, and then allegedly stole his cash and car keys. The car was later discovered at the Alewife Station, police said. O’Brien was brought to the Burlington Police Department Friday and was then transported to the custody of Arlington police. He is expected to be arraigned in Cambridge District Court on Monday."
