Some 233,000 gallons of molasses spilled from a leaky pipe Sept. 9 as the sugary substance was moved from storage tanks to ships sailing to California....
A Coast Guard unit that specializes in responding to hazardous spills is joining the effort to clean up and assess the damage. The cause of the spill has not been determined.
Vic Angoco, senior vice president for Matson’s Pacific operations, has said the company takes responsibility but had no contingency plan for the possibility of the spill, despite moving molasses from the harbor for about 30 years....
Thousands of fish have died, but the full extent of the damage and how long it might last are unclear....

HONOLULU — A 20-year-old German woman who lost her right arm in a shark attack near Hawaii last week is being remembered by her family....
Jana Lutteropp was the first person to die from a shark attack in Hawaii since 2004. The incident is drawing attention from state officials, who say they are getting calls from the public about beach safety....
Hawaii's version of Jaws?
The last time someone in Hawaii died from a shark attack was in 2004. The last fatal attack before that was in 1992.
Hawaii officials announced Tuesday they plan to spend the next two years studying tiger shark movements around Maui amid what they call an unprecedented rise in overall shark attacks since 2012.
