Arkansas Police Execute Old Man

"Man, 107, killed in Ark. police standoff" Associated Press, September 09, 2013

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — A 107-year-old man was killed after SWAT officers shot back at him during a standoff at a home, police said Sunday.

A SWAT team appears to be standard issue for police calls now.

Police were called to the home Saturday afternoon about a disturbance and said officers arrived to find Monroe Isadore had threatened two people by pointing a weapon at them.

Officers had the pair leave the home for their own safety and approached a bedroom looking for Isadore. When the officers announced who they were, Isadore shot through the door but missed hitting them, police Lieutenant David Price said.

So the police say.

The officers retreated to a safer area, and supervisors and additional help were called, Price said. Supervisors started negotiating with Isadore and continued after SWAT officers arrived at the home about 45 miles southeast of Little Rock.

I stand corrected. They are on stand-by.

The SWAT team inserted a camera into the room and confirmed Isadore was armed with a handgun, Price said.

When it was clear the negotiations were not working, SWAT officers released gas into the room from outside a bedroom window, Price said.

SWAT officers entered the home, made their way to the bedroom and threw a ‘‘distraction device’’ into the room, Price said. He said Isadore began to fire at the officers and they fired back, killing him.

The gas or "distraction device" didn't do the job?

Price said in a news release that the investigation is ongoing. He did not immediately return phone calls Sunday for further comment.

"Ark. girl fighting rare brain infection can speak"  Associated Press, August 22, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A 12-year-old Arkansas girl who has been battling a rare and often-fatal infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba is now able to say a few words.

Kali Hardig was diagnosed last month with an infection caused by an amoeba called Naegleria fowleri.

There were 128 such infections reported in the United States between 1962 and 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Before Kali, doctors could identify only one known survivor in the United States and another in Mexico.

‘‘She’s not speaking normal, but she is doing wonderful trying to pronounce stuff,’’ Kali’s mother, Traci Hardig, said Wednesday. ‘‘She can say yes and no.’’

Officials believe Kali got sick after a trip to a now closed Arkansas water park that has a sandy-bottomed lake.

Naegleria fowleri often is found in warm bodies of fresh water, such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs. The amoeba enters the body through the nose as people are swimming or diving. It can then travel to the brain, causing a devastating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.

I'm glad I never go swimming.
