A masked man robbed a bank at the Prudential Center at gunpoint Thursday afternoon, making off with about $3,000 before Boston police officers captured him after a brief pursuit, authorities said.
The holdup in a bustling section of the city’s downtown area occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m., when the suspect, whom police identified as Kenneth Robinson, 53, allegedly burst into the Santander Bank branch at 800 Boylston St. brandishing a gun and demanding money, police said.
Robinson then allegedly fled on foot with the cash and crossed Huntington Avenue, making his way to St. Botolph Street, where two officers saw him get into a vehicle, law enforcement officials said.
Officers pursued Robinson for a short distance and boxed in his vehicle with their cruisers. He eventually crashed into parked cars, police said.
A firearm was seized from the passenger seat of Robinson’s car, said Officer James Kenneally, a police spokesman.
Robinson, of Boston, will probably be arraigned Friday on an armed bank robbery charge, Kenneally said.
Santander employees told police that Robinson had entered the bank wearing a yellow shirt and a blue surgical mask, Kenneally said.
Commissioner William B. Evans praised the arresting officers.
“I want to commend the quick actions and keen observations of the responding officers,” Evans said in a statement.
“Thanks to them, a gun was recovered, and an armed felon is behind bars.”
Robinson had a handicap parking placard on the car that he crashed and told the officers that he was not feeling well, police said.
As a result, he was taken under guard to Boston Medical Center for an evaluation, Superintendent Robert Merner said.
