"Ransomware Attack Raises Concerns Over Future Assaults" by Mark Scott New York Times  June 28, 2017

(Blog editor lets out a sob)

NEW YORK — The worldwide cyberattack, which began and was most prevalent in Ukraine, has raised concerns that similar attempts will become more widespread as hackers mimic the techniques.

Experts said that the most recent attack was less severe than a similar hacking in May, yet as law enforcement, governments, and companies from the United States to India assessed the damage of the new attack, many cautioned that people should be prepared for such events to become a regular danger as criminals worldwide look to take advantage of vulnerabilities in organizations’ digital infrastructure.

“It’s pretty clear that this attack was inspired by WannaCry,” said Gavin O’Gorman, an intelligence analyst at Symantec, a cybersecurity company. “We’ll likely see more of these types of attacks in the future.”

Like the WannaCry attack last month, computers struck by the virus displayed a message that their data had been encrypted and demanded a ransom — in this case, $300 — to decrypt it.

Experts initially said the malware that began to strike computers on Tuesday was similar to a virus called Petya, first identified last year. But Kaspersky Lab, a cybersecurity firm based in Moscow, later said that it was a type of ransomware that had never been seen before.

They are some sort of Russian spy outfit if you read my pre$$ everyday like I do.

The scope of the attack underlines the power of a cache of National Security Agency hacking tools that were leaked to the public. Hackers made use of the same NSA tools that were used during the WannaCry episode, along with two other methods to promote its spread, according to Symantec.

The use of the word leaked is an interesting tell. Stuff wasn't stolen or hacked, it was leaked. By who, NYT?

The reason the cyberattack was less widespread was not immediately clear, though experts expressed doubt that the world had learned its lesson and prepared properly. So far, the hacking has generated more than $10,000 in ransom payments, a figure that is likely to rise.

That's all? That's about one-fifth of the last reported haul.

Security researchers said the attack originated in Ukraine. While law enforcement officials struggled to determine who was behind the attack, Microsoft said the assailants initially focused on supply-chain software run by M.E.Doc, a Ukrainian company specializing in tax accountancy. In a Facebook post, M.E.Doc denied it was the source of the attack.....

I don't really care what's cooking over at the NYT, but what I do know is one man stood against government trapdoors. Whatever happened to him, anyway?

You know, I've mentioned from time to time how Venezuela has dropped off their radar screen, and now it appears with this?

"Venezuelan manhunt underway for helicopter attacker" by Joshua Goodman Associated Press  June 28, 2017

CARACAS, Venezuela — Oscar Perez is a cop, pilot, action movie star, and dog trainer. He’s now also a fugitive, accused of strafing two key Venezuelan government buildings from a helicopter in a quixotic attempt to set off a revolt against President Nicolas Maduro.

Authorities on Wednesday conducted a nationwide manhunt for Perez a day after the government charged that he stole the police chopper and directed grenades and gunfire against the Supreme Court and Interior Ministry in what Maduro called a ‘‘terrorist attack.’’

No one was injured, and there was no sign of damage at the buildings. But the episode added another layer of intrigue to a 3-month-old political crisis that has left at least 75 people dead and hundreds more jailed or injured in clashes between security forces and protesters seeking Maduro’s removal.

Did Perez act alone? Are other military uprisings in the works? Or was it an elaborate ruse clumsily orchestrated by the government to distract public attention or justify a tougher crackdown on the opposition?

Since when did the pre$$ ask so many questions?

National Assembly President Julio Borges expressed doubts about Maduro’s version of events but cautioned that he and the rest of the opposition were still analyzing what happened.

‘‘There are people who say it was a government-staged hoax, others who say it was real,’’ he said in a radio interview. ‘‘Whatever it was, it all points in the same direction: that the situation in Venezuela is unsustainable.’’

(Blog editor starts wailing. The over-the-top, jump-the-shark insults have gone too far)

Little is known about Perez.

On his Instagram account, he notes his job as a police investigator and tactical helicopter pilot and says his passion is Venezuela.

In 2015, he starred in a film called ‘‘Suspended Death,” and several photos show him in fatigues, bearing assault rifles, skydiving, and standing in action poses with a German shepherd by his side.

Sometime Tuesday, he posted on his Instagram account a video in which he read a manifesto calling for rebellion. He claimed to speak on behalf of a coalition of renegade members of the security forces.

Eyewitness accounts say the helicopter had hanging from its side a large banner referring to Article 350 of Venezuela’s constitution, which empowers Venezuelans to disobey any regime that violates human rights.

‘‘We have two choices: be judged tomorrow by our conscience and the people or begin today to free ourselves from this corrupt government,’’ Perez said while reading from the manifesto in front of four figures dressed in fatigues and ski masks and carrying assault rifles.

The government accused Perez and others in the helicopter of firing 15 shots at the Interior Ministry as a reception was taking place for 80 people. It then flew a short distance to the court, which was in session, and dropped grenades, two of them against national guardsmen protecting the building.

The helicopter was later found near the coast in Vargas state not far from Caracas, and elite special forces were deployed there to press the hunt, Vice President Tareck El Aissami said.

Photos of the pilot standing in front of the US Capitol in Washington and a US Coast Guard helicopter were shown on state television to bolster the government’s case that he was taking instructions from the CIA and the US Embassy.

They are both the same these days, the station and the embassy.

‘‘The magistrates of the Supreme Court and other judges of the nation are under a terrorist threat, for which we will request the appropriate measures to safeguard our integrity and that of our institutions,’’ the high court said in a statement read by Maikel Moreno, the tribunal’s president.

As the drama was unfolding outside the court, inside magistrates were issuing a number of rulings further blocking the opposition.

One broadened the powers of staunchly progovernment ombudsman Tarek William Saab, allowing him to carry out criminal investigations that are the exclusive prerogative of Maduro’s most powerful critic, chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega Diaz.

A defiant Ortega accused Maduro of carrying out ‘‘state terrorism’’ and said she won’t recognize three new rulings she portrayed as a brazen attempt to eliminate her position as the country’s top law enforcement official.

‘‘These rulings are giving the power to investigate human rights abuses to people who possibly are violating those rights,’’ she said in her strongest remarks since breaking with Maduro over a ruling stripping the opposition-controlled legislature of its last powers.

In Washington, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley warned that that the situation in Venezuela is spinning out of control.

Maduro ‘‘is blaming the protesters for trying to overthrow his government when all they want is true democracy,’’ she told a congressional committee.

"Six Are Charged in 1989 Hillsborough Stadium Disaster in England" by Dan Bilefsky New York Times  June 29, 2017

LONDON — Decades after the deadliest stadium disaster in English soccer history, British prosecutors charged six people on Wednesday, including four former senior police officials, in the deaths of 96 people crushed and trampled to death at Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield in 1989.

The catastrophe transformed how the sport is viewed in the country, and the decision is a long-awaited vindication for the families of the victims, including 37 teenagers, who were fatally crushed or trampled.

The victims suffocated at an FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest after police opened a gate in an effort to relieve congestion outside the stadium before the game. That resulted in fans outside flooding in, trampling some and crushing others against steel fencing. After the disaster, some senior law enforcement officials and members of the media, particularly at The Sun, initially pointed fingers at the victims for abetting their own deaths, saying they had been drunk and unruly.

The decades-long struggle to find out what really happened on the day of the match dragged as authorities sought to obfuscate and blame the fans for the disaster. The 1989 Taylor Inquiry blamed a “failure of police control” and found that police had wrongly tried to shift blame onto the fans, but a 1991 coroner’s inquest judged the deaths to be accidental, and no criminal charges were filed. Grieving families waged a lengthy campaign that eventually shifted the prevailing narrative in the case — which has raised issues of class, institutional accountability, and justice — away from the behavior of the fans to the failure of law enforcement.

In 2012, an independent panel concluded that there had been an elaborate police coverup, the government apologized to the victims, and a court overturned the finding that the deaths were accidental. That prompted the new inquest, which began in 2014.

And yet we are to believe authority at every turn now. Wow.

On Wednesday, families expressed relief at the prosecution service’s decision.....

I cried about this yesterday, and those are the people I care about. Their stories are moving.

Thankfully, no one died in Dorchester:

"Fire guts nearly finished Dorchester building" by Tim Logan, Travis Andersen and John R. Ellement Globe Staff  June 28, 2017

The $45 million apartment building that was gutted by a six-alarm fire in the Ashmont section of Dorchester on Wednesday is precisely the sort of housing that many in Boston’s development community say the city needs more of: mid-rise, mixed-income, near the T.

And built almost entirely out of wood.

The building was nearly finished, with the first 17 residents of affordable apartments set to move in next month. The sprinkler system was installed but not yet active, with inspections planned for later this week. Now Trinity — which said it has insurance on the project – will likely have to start over.

???????????????????

As this sort of wood-frame development has become more popular around the country, concerns have grown about fires during construction, before sprinklers and other safety systems are fully operational.

Dozens of similar buildings have burned down over the last few years, according to data tracked by a concrete industry trade group pushing for more stringent fire-protection rules. They include a huge apartment complex in downtown Los Angeles in late 2014 and a Raleigh, N.C., project that was incinerated in March in one that biggest fires in that city’s history.

In the wake of Grenfell we have been told U.S. fire codes are a standard for the world!

WTF?

The problem isn’t so much the wood as it is human error, said Allan Fraser, senior building code specialist with the Quincy-based National Fire Protection Association. Developers and contractors are pushing to build housing fast, and at the lowest-possible cost. That can lead to mistakes, he said. But in a nearly built building, a small mistake can cause a big fire.

So what are you saying, developers are cutting corners when it comes to poor people's housing?

“If you don’t have the fireproofing, you don’t have the standpipes, you don’t have the sprinklers, you can start a small fire and it doesn’t take long for stuff to go up in flames,” he said.

When asked if builders at Treadmark had followed proper procedures, Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said the project was “well permitted.”

The blaze, which began at about 2:30 p.m., appears to have started on the top floor, Finn said, but it was too early Wednesday evening to pinpoint a cause. It moved fast through the building, Finn said, and heavy air conditioning units on the roof buckled, making it unstable and forcing fire crews to back off the building.

“Because of the lightweight construction [materials] the building started to collapse,” said Finn, who termed it a “very dangerous building” for firefighters and said more collapses could come Wednesday night.

The intensity of the blaze struck neighbors as they watched from nearby.

“It was like an inferno, when you blow out the candles and the candles light back up,” said Selena Penix, who lives around the corner. “Unbelievable.”

Yeah!

One construction worker was treated for chest pains, but no one else was hurt.....

Did someone say sabotage or in$urance fraud?

"North Korea vows to execute former South Korean president" Associated Press  June 28, 2017

SEOUL — North Korea on Wednesday vowed to execute South Korea’s former president and her spy director, accusing them of planning to assassinate its supreme leadership.

The official Korean Central News Agency said North Korea will impose a ‘‘death penalty’’ on ousted South Korean president Park Geun-hye and former spy chief Lee Byoung Ho, and they could receive a ‘‘miserable dog’s death any time, at any place, and by whatever methods from this moment.’’

Meaning they will be framed like the last time.

It accused Park of pushing forward a secret operation to ‘‘replace the supreme leadership’’ of the North beginning in late 2015 in a plan spearheaded by the South’s National Intelligence Service that included an assassination plot.

It said the plan was automatically scrapped when lawmakers impeached Park last December over a corruption scandal.

North Korea also demanded that South Korea hand over Park and Lee under ‘‘international convention’’ because they committed ‘‘state-sponsored terrorism.’’

An official from the South’s National Intelligence Agency said the allegations were untrue.

"Kenya 1st in Africa to use generic of current AIDS drug" Associated Press  June 28, 2017

NAIROBI — Kenya is the first country in Africa to introduce a generic version of the current drug of choice for people living with HIV, officials said Wednesday.

Kenya’s government and the global health initiative Unitaid announced that the East African nation will make the generic version of dolutegravir available for routine use. They said Nigeria and Uganda will introduce the drug later this year.

The move is part of efforts to make such drugs that are widely used in developed countries more accessible to impoverished ones. It can take more than a decade for new drugs to be introduced in lower-income countries, Unitaid said.

The World Health Organization says the region most affected by HIV is sub-Saharan Africa, which has two-thirds of the world’s new HIV infections.

In 2015, more than 25 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were living with HIV, according to WHO.

Kenya’s health ministry says it will give the drug initially to 27,000 people living with HIV who can’t tolerate the current drug of choice used in the country, efavirenz. It will be distributed free of charge as part of the country’s free antiretroviral program in public hospitals, officials said.

No disrespect intended to the countries and peoples above; however, note what is missing from my war pre$$: nothing about Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Philippines, etc, and only a token honor for the vets (although we did hear from the Israeli sector.)

Was something about Russia, though:

"In praise of leverage and back channels in Russia policy" by Christopher Smart   June 28, 2017

We have reached an absurd moment in which even talks about talks with Russia raise suspicion. Anyone who has crossed paths with the prickly Russian ambassador draws suspicious looks. Of course murky meetings between Jared Kushner and a Russian banker need to be explained. Yet, the list of thorny issues that divide Moscow and Washington is getting longer, and political hostilities in both capitals make even limited outreach impossible.

A legitimate back channel can prove invaluable, especially when there is so much political emotion on both sides. The president’s relatives may not be the right choice, but senior officials at the State Department or the National Security Council should be cultivating their Russian counterparts, if only to have someone to call when the next crisis arises. It could be a miscalculation over NATO air patrols near the Baltic states, but it’s more likely to be something we cannot foresee.

If the United States can find a path to lower the risks of a confrontation, it can then resume the devilish task of managing what will always be a difficult relationship. While Russia is not strong enough to advance its own agenda, it is always up to the task of frustrating the US agenda. On global issues like climate change, energy policy, or nuclear proliferation, there are no solutions without Russian participation. And the first steps in that direction require negotiating leverage and quiet communication.

Meanwhile.....

Capuano’s Challenge

Mine is getting through each day:

"Cambridge councilor plans to challenge Capuano" by Joshua Miller Globe Staff  June 28, 2017

Cambridge City Councilor Nadeem A. Mazen, the state’s highest-profile Muslim elected official, is planning a run against US Representative Michael E. Capuano in next year’s primary, according to several people familiar with his thinking.

The councilor is plotting a bid to unseat the 10-term Democrat in a congressional district that includes Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Randolph, half of Cambridge, one-third of Milton, and the majority of Boston.

If Mazen pulls the trigger, it would pit a 33-year-old MIT graduate, entrepreneur, and two-term city councilor against a 65-year-old former Somerville mayor and alderman — two progressives in one of the most Democratic districts in the country.

It truly is a war pre$$, right down the seemingly meaningless word choices. Wow.

And what is the point?

Capuano has not faced a serious electoral challenge since voters sent him to Washington in 1998.

Paul Trane, a longtime friend and political adviser to Capuano, said the congressman is running for reelection in 2018.

“He’s one of the most anti-Washington-style congressmen in America,” Trane said. “If people look at his opposition to Donald Trump, taking on big banks and the Wall Street CEOs, his opposition to the never-ending wars around the globe, this is a guy who is in touch with his district.”

That is the first I have read or seen regarding any opposition to the wars coming from any politicians.

Unseating any incumbent congressman in a primary is a steep uphill battle.

And Capuano, a pugnacious liberal with a strong local base of support, is largely seen as being politically in line with his district, Massachusetts’ most Democratic and one of the most Democratic congressional districts in the country. (Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by more than 70 percentage points in the district, according to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.)

Capuano, a half-Irish, half-Italian Roman Catholic, was the longtime mayor of Somerville before his congressional victory. In a 10-person field to succeed retiring representative Joe Kennedy II, Capuano racked up big vote totals in Somerville and won overall by a comfortable margin nearly 20 years ago.

A graduate of Dartmouth College and Boston College Law School, Capuano has the brass-knuckle progressivism and Ivy League pedigree that has made him appealing to both the resients of the old ethnic neighborhoods in his district and the new gentrifiers, who have transformed large swaths of Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville in recent years.

In Congress, Capuano has been outspoken on key liberal issues, from opposing the war in Iraq to pressing for federal transportation funding to extend the Green Line.

A close ally of Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi’s during her tenure as House speaker, Capuano helped lead a task force to revamp the way Congress deals with allegations of misconduct.

But Capuano has appeared to drift away from Pelosi’s inner orbit, saying in 2015 that she should go or change her approach, and that House Democrats need leadership who understand “if something that you’re doing is not working, change what you’re doing.”

The Seventh District is demographically diverse. It had a 56 percent minority population in 2012. (Districts are redrawn after each decennial US Census.)

Mazen, whose family moved from Illinois to Andover when he was 5 years old, is the son of an Egyptian-born father and Indiana-born mother. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 2002 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Was he aware or a victim of abuse?

The founder and chief executive of Nimblebot, a creative agency that makes animated content for technology, nonprofit, education, and government clients, Mazen ran for and won a seat on Cambridge City Council in 2013. He was reelected in 2015 and in 2015, he cofounded Jetpac — a nonprofit justice, education, and technology policy advocacy center devoted to training more Muslims and other underrepresented minority people to organize and run for public office.

Capuano would start a race with a sizable fund-raising advantage and the ability to raise millions more. Members of Congress have access to powerful party fund-raising apparatuses, giving them the ability to raise huge sums in short period of time.....

"Seth Moulton seemed to be in Nancy Pelosi’s fan club. And then he wasn’t" by Annie Linskey Globe Staff  June 28, 2017

SALEM — Cowboys don’t always make the best legislators, particularly in the House of Representatives, but his actions are consistent with a tradition of Massachusetts lawmakers displaying the kind of ambition that attracts national attention.

US Representative Joe Kennedy III, another rising star in the delegation, said strong leaders rock the boat.

Unless their name happens to be Trump.

But he hews closely to the party line when bills come to the House floor. He’s voted with Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, 94 percent of the time, according to a tally by CQ Roll Call.

[His] criticism of Pelosi is being tracked closely in his district, where he’s receiving a measure of support for those comments.

Who he?

Retired General David Petraeus, to whom Representative Seth Moulton directly reported in Iraq in 2005 as a lieutenant and again during the surge from 2007 to 2008 when he was a captain, said he handpicked Moulton to be part of his team, a group that was trying to rebuild Iraqi military and civilian institutions, precisely because of Moulton’s willingness to take risks and battle bureaucracies.

Petraeus said he sees some parallels between what Moulton is doing in his political career now, by taking on his own party’s leadership, and what their team was trying to achieve in Iraq. But he also offered a warning of sorts.

“He’s heard me say: ‘The bold move is the right move . . . unless it’s the wrong move,’ ” Petraeus said. “You’ve got to understand when you can really push the envelope.”

Can't get a better patron than that, can you?

Moulton acknowledged that he found himself on the wrong side of important people while serving in the military.

Moulton has forged some deep ties across the aisle, including with Republican intellectuals who respect him though they do not always agree with him. A prominent member of this group is Bill Kristol, the founder of the conservative Weekly Standard magazine.

And one of the original members of the Project for the New AmeriKan Century, a neocon war-mongering outfit.

He sees a place for Moulton in finding common ground with House Republicans on smaller bore issues that are important to his district, including combating opioids and job retraining.

“You could see some legislation with interesting sponsors, not from the leadership, not from the top, but bills that come bubbling up in 2018,” Kristol predicted. “That could be something where Seth would be an obvious person.”

And on a personal level at least, Moulton does have some relationship with the 47-year-old leader of the House Republicans: Paul Ryan.

He got special permission from Ryan to propose to his girlfriend, Liz Boardman, on the Speaker’s Balcony, a gorgeous terrace in the US Capitol with a commanding view of the National Mall. And Ryan even shooed away others so Moulton would have the patio to himself.....

Biparti$an$hip at its best!

"Man destroys new Ten Commandments statue at Arkansas Capitol" Associated Press  June 28, 2017

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A man yelled ‘‘Freedom!’’ as he crashed his vehicle into Arkansas’ new Ten Commandments monument early Wednesday, nearly three years after he was arrested in the destruction of Oklahoma’s monument at its state Capitol, authorities said.

The privately funded Arkansas monument had been in place outside the state Capitol for less than 24 hours before it was knocked from its plinth and smashed to pieces.

Michael Tate Reed, 32, of Van Buren, Ark., was booked in the Pulaski County jail shortly after 7:30 a.m. on preliminary charges of defacing objects of public interest, criminal trespass, and first-degree criminal mischief. An arrest report lists his occupation as ‘‘unemployed/disabled.’’

Kind of looks like he has a mission, 'er, job.

Arkansas Secretary of State’s Office spokesman Chris Powell said officials believe a Facebook Live video posted on a Michael Reed’s Facebook account that depicted the destruction is authentic.

In a 2015 e-mail to the Tulsa World , Reed apologized for wrecking Oklahoma’s monument and said he suffered from mental health issues.

Arkansas’ granite monument was installed Tuesday morning on the southwest lawn of the Capitol with little fanfare and no advance notice. A 2015 law required the state to allow the display near the Capitol.

"Mississippi man takes Confederate flag fight to Supreme Court" by Emily Wagster Pettus Associated Press  June 28, 2017

JACKSON, Miss. — A black Mississippi citizen is taking his case against the state’s Confederate-themed flag to the US Supreme Court.

In papers filed Wednesday, attorneys for Carlos Moore said lower courts were wrong to reject his argument that the flag is a symbol of white supremacy that harms him and his young daughter by violating the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection to all citizens.

His attorneys wrote that under the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruling against Moore, ‘‘a city could adopt ‘White Supremacy Forever’ as its official motto; or a county could incorporate an image of white hooded figures and a noose hanging from a tree into its county seal; or a state could incorporate a Nazi swastika, as an endorsement of Aryan/white supremacy, in its state flag.’’

Mississippi’s is the last state flag to feature the Confederate battle emblem.

Mississippi has used the flag since 1894, displaying its red field and tilted blue cross dotted with 13 white stars in the upper left corner. Voters kept it in a 2001 election.

However, several cities and towns and all eight of the state’s public universities have stopped flying the flag amid concerns that it is offensive in a state where 38 percent of the population is black.

The lawsuit Moore filed in February 2016 says the Mississippi flag is ‘‘state-sanctioned hate speech,’’ and seeks to have it declared an unconstitutional relic of slavery.

US District Judge Carlton Reeves dismissed it in September without ruling on the merits, saying Moore lacked legal standing to sue because he failed to show the emblem caused an identifiable legal injury.

It will be October, at the earliest, before the Supreme Court will say whether it will take the case. The Mississippi attorney general’s office, which has defended the state, declined to comment Wednesday.

"Medford hospital sharply cutting inpatient services" by Priyanka Dayal McCluskey Globe Staff  June 28, 2017

Hallmark Health System plans to significantly slash inpatient services at its struggling hospital in Medford beginning this fall, the company said Wednesday.

Officials said they plan to close 50 of the 98 inpatient beds at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, including all 40 medical/surgical beds and all 10 intensive care beds. Medford-area patients who need those services would be directed to Hallmark’s other inpatient facility, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose.

The remaining inpatient beds in Medford would serve psychiatric patients only. Emergency services, urgent care, and many outpatient services — including weight loss, sleep, and diabetes programs — would remain open.

About 65 people are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the planned changes. The health system, which has been losing money, had announced 57 layoffs in November.

Many community hospitals have struggled to turn a profit and stay competitive in the changing health care industry, and Hallmark, with its hospitals located just north of Boston, faces acute competition from the many brand-name academic medical centers a few miles away.

The company’s chief executive, Alan G. Macdonald, told employees that the company is on track to lose money again this year, about $16 million.

For several years, Hallmark had planned to be acquired by Partners HealthCare, the parent company of Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s hospitals. Partners had planned to reduce inpatient services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, converting it to a short-stay hospital, but Hallmark and Partners dropped their merger plans in late 2015 after ongoing concerns from Attorney General Maura Healey and others that the deal would bolster Partners’ already great market power and raise costs for consumers.

Hallmark then went looking for a new merger partner. In January, it became part of Wellforce, the parent company of Tufts Medical Center and Lowell General Hospital.....

"Pastor to face trial in granddaughter’s faith healing death" Associated Press  June 29, 2017

WERNERSVILLE, Pa. — The pastor of a fundamentalist congregation that eschews modern medicine will stand trial on a charge he should have alerted authorities when his 2-year-old granddaughter was dying of pneumonia last year, a Pennsylvania judge ruled Wednesday.

District Judge Ann Young reversed a different judge’s decision in April to throw out the charge of failure to properly report suspected child abuse.

Young called the death of Ella Foster ‘‘tragic, sad, beyond belief,’’ and told Rowland Foster, 72, she was not questioning his religious beliefs.

A forensic pathologist said the girl’s condition would have been easily treatable.

Foster’s defense attorney, Chris Ferro, said prosecutors will have difficulty getting a conviction at trial, which will require a more stringent level of proof.

"Staples agrees to $6.9 billion buyout" by Janelle Nanos and Jon Chesto Globe Staff  June 28, 2017

Staples Inc. has agreed to be acquired by the investment firm Sycamore Partners for about $6.9 billion, the latest attempt by the Framingham-based retailer to end its downward spiral of shrinking sales, store closings, and layoffs.

The deal, announced Wednesday, highlights Staples’ attempts to survive in an office-supply market upended by the rise of e-commerce and an increasingly digital workplace.

The company opened its first store in 1986, with backing from Boston’s Bain Capital, and expanded steadily to become the biggest player in the office-supplymarket. But competition from online retailers like Amazon.com has eaten into sales and profits, forcing Staples to retrench.

Sycamore has experience taking on troubled retailers.

Analysts said Staples faces an uphill battle, even as a private company.

“This doesn’t change the industry dynamics or the pressures the retailer faces,” said Seema Shah, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence.

“The risk is, of course, is that sales and margins continue to be under pressure and that the retailer struggles to service its debt,” she said.

For years, Staples has been scaling back its physical footprint, having shuttered 350 stores in the past five years. In March, it announced plans to close 70 more.

The company has struggled with declining revenues and profits for years, and in May reported first-quarter revenue of $4.1 billion, down 4.9 percent from a year earlier. It saw a net loss of $815 million, largely from discontinued operations, compared with net income of $41 million in the prior year’s period.

But in an effort to make better use of its brick-and-mortar stores, Staples partnered with the co-working startup Workbar to create shared office spaces. Staples now hosts three co-branded workspaces, in its Brighton, Danvers, and Norwood stores. The company also recently launched a series of television ads that aim to shift its focus away from retail storefronts and more to serving business managers.

Staples’ start dates back to when its founder, grocery store executive Tom Stemberg, struggled to find a roll of typewriter ribbon over the Fourth of July weekend in 1985.

Stemberg opened his first store less than a year later, and Bain Capital helped take the company public in 1989.

Staples’ chief executive, Shira Goodman, arrived at Staples in the 1990s after working with the company as a consultant at Bain & Co.....

"The US stock market notched its biggest gain in two months Wednesday, bouncing back from losses a day earlier. Staples climbed 8.5 percent after The Wall Street Journal reported the office supplies retailer has agreed to be acquired by Sycamore Partners. The stock was the biggest gainer in the S&P 500. Banks and other financial companies led the rally, however, as investors bet on interest rates climbing further. Banks can make more money on lending when rates move higher. Technology companies were among the big gainers, recouping some of their recent losses. Energy stocks also rose as the price of crude oil closed higher for the fifth straight day. Utilities and real estate companies were the only laggards. Investors also bid up shares in companies that reported improved quarterly results....."

"Staples charity goes Gaga, dumps Perry as partner" June 28, 2017

Katy Perry famously got into an ongoing feud with Taylor Swift. But maybe she should train her sights on Lady Gaga instead.

After all, Staples decided to work with Gaga this year as the celebrity partner for its Staples for Students program. Perry, it turns out, is so 2016.

A Staples spokeswoman said no slight was intended. Perry was also involved in the campaign in 2014, before Staples worked with singer Nick Jonas. Staples picks celebrities that appeal to both moms and teens. They also need to have a demonstrated interest in helping students.

A huge social media following — Gaga has 67 million followers on Twitter, while Perry has 100 million — sure helps, too.

So why did Lady Gaga get the honors this time around? The Staples spokeswoman said company executives were impressed with her work in schools through her Born This Way Foundation. Staples is sponsoring Lady Gaga’s summer tour and donating $1 million to her foundation to help create positive classroom experiences, alongside a corporate $1 million gift to DonorsChoose.org to support teachers and students.

More likely it was Perry's meltdown, and now Lady Gaga is queen.

As part of the campaign, Staples has created a new public service announcement with the singer that features a call to action to promote kindness in school and support teachers so they have the resources they need in the classroom.

Gaga fans will get the chance to enter a sweepstakes to win a $50,000 scholarship and a trip to Las Vegas to meet the singer and attend a concert. Five additional winners will get the Vegas trip and concert tickets.

No word yet on whether the executives at Sycamore Partners — the New York-based private equity firm that unveiled a deal to buy Staples on Wednesday for $6.9 billion — will have tickets to the show as well. But it’s a good bet the folks at the office supplier’s Framingham headquarters will be able to secure a few for them.

WannaCry Wednesday

"New global cyberattack spreads from Russia to Britain" by Nicole Perlroth, Mark Scott and Sheera Frenkel New York Times   June 27, 2017

Related: New York Times Makes Me WannaCry

Computer systems from Ukraine to the United States were struck on Tuesday in an international cyberattack that was like a recent assault that crippled tens of thousands of machines worldwide.

In Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, ATMs stopped working. About 80 miles away, workers were forced to manually monitor radiation at the old Chernobyl nuclear plant when their computers failed. And tech managers at companies around the world, from the Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk to US drug giant Merck, were scrambling to respond.

Related:

"The positive result was a welcome surprise because three previous experimental drugs of the same type had failed....."

$ome good news amongst the bad.

It was unclear who was behind this cyberattack, and the extent of its effect was still hard to gauge Tuesday.

It started as an attack on Ukrainian government and business computer systems — an assault that appeared to have been intended to hit the day before a holiday marking the adoption in 1996 of Ukraine’s first constitution after breaking away from the Soviet Union. It spread from there, causing collateral damage around the world.

I'm sure that was to establish Russian fingerprints.

This outbreak is the latest and perhaps the most sophisticated in a series of attacks that make use of dozens of hacking tools that were stolen from the National Security Agency and leaked online in April by a group called the Shadow Brokers.

See: Shadow Broker Bull$h**

Like the WannaCry attacks in May, the latest global hacking took control of computers and demanded digital ransom from their owners to regain access. This attack used the same NSA hacking tool, Eternal Blue, that was used in the WannaCry incident, and two other methods to promote its spread, according to researchers at the computer security company Symantec.

So where do they want the money sent this time after the earlier flop?

The NSA has not acknowledged its tools were used in WannaCry or other attacks. But computer security specialists are demanding that the agency help the rest of the world defend against the weapons it created.

Well, if they are still using them.... see the beauty here?

“The NSA needs to take a leadership role in working closely with security and operating system platform vendors such as Apple and Microsoft to address the plague that they’ve unleashed,” said Golan Ben-Oni, the global chief information officer at IDT, a Newark, N.J.-based conglomerate hit by a separate attack in April that used NSA hacking tools. Ben-Oni warned federal officials that more serious attacks were probably on the horizon.

The vulnerability in Windows software used by Eternal Blue was patched by Microsoft in March, but as the WannaCry attacks demonstrated, hundreds of thousands of organizations around the world failed to properly install the fix.

“Just because you roll out a patch doesn’t mean it’ll be put in place quickly,” said Carl Herberger, vice president of security at Radware. “The more bureaucratic an organization is, the higher chance it won’t have updated its software.”

Government at the top of the list, too. Same government collecting all the data.

Because the ransomware used at least two other ways to spread on Tuesday, even those who used the Microsoft patch could be vulnerable, according to researchers at F-Secure, the Finnish cybersecurity firm.

CIA always insists on a trapdoor. How do you think all this trouble started?

A Microsoft spokesman said the company’s latest anti-virus software should protect against the attack.

The Ukrainian government said several of its ministries, local banks, and metro systems had been affected. A number of other European companies, including Rosneft, the Russian energy giant; Saint-Gobain, the French construction materials company; and WPP, the British advertising agency, also said they had been targeted.

Ukrainian officials pointed a finger at Russia on Tuesday, though Russian companies were also affected. Home Credit bank, one of Russia’s top 50 lenders, was paralyzed, with all of its offices closed, according to the RBC news website. The attack also affected Evraz, a steel manufacturing and mining company that employs about 80,000 people, the RBC website reported.

In the United States, DLA Piper, the multinational law firm, also reported being hit. Hospitals in Pennsylvania were being forced to cancel surgeries after the attack hit computers at Heritage Valley Health Systems, a health care provider, and its hospitals in Beaver and Sewickley, Pa., and satellite locations across the state.

A spokesman for the NSA referred questions about the attack to the Department of Homeland Security.

“The Department of Homeland Security is monitoring reports of cyberattacks affecting multiple global entities and is coordinating with our international and domestic cyberpartners,” Scott McConnell, spokesman for DHS, said in a statement.

Computer specialists said the ransomware was very similar to a virus that first emerged last year called Petya. Petya means “Little Peter,” in Russian, leading some to speculate the name referred to Sergei Prokofiev’s 1936 symphony “Peter and the Wolf,” about a boy who captures a wolf.

Yeah, must be the Russians then.

Reports that the computer virus was a variant of Petya suggest the attackers will be hard to trace. Petya was for sale on the so-called dark web, where its creators made the ransomware available as “ransomware as a service” — a play on Silicon Valley terminology for delivering software over the internet, according to the security firm Avast Threat Labs.

Don't intelligence agencies operate in the dark shadows with their covert operations?

Who benefits here?

That means anyone could launch the ransomware with the click of a button, encrypt someone’s systems, and demand a ransom to unlock it. If the victim pays, the authors of the Petya ransomware, who call themselves Janus Cybercrime Solutions, get a cut of the payment.

That distribution method means that pinning down the people responsible for Tuesday’s attack could be difficult.

This so stinks of the endless psyop sh** we have been getting, and my eyes are starting to water.

The attack is “an improved and more lethal version of WannaCry,” according to Matthieu Suiche, a security researcher who helped contain the spread of the WannaCry ransomware when he created a kill switch that stopped the attacks.

In just the last seven days, Suiche noted that WannaCry had tried to hit an additional 80,000 organizations, but was prevented from executing attack code because of the kill switch. Petya does not have a kill switch.

Petya also encrypts and locks entire hard drives, while the earlier ransomware attacks locked only individual files, said Chris Hinkley, a researcher at Armor, the security firm.

The hackers behind Petya demanded $300 worth of the cybercurrency bitcoin to unlock victims’ machines. By Tuesday afternoon, online records showed that 30 victims had paid the ransom, though it was not clear whether they regained access to their files. Other victims may be out of luck, after Posteo, the German email service provider, shut down the hackers’ email account.

In Ukraine, people turned up at post offices, ATMs, and airports to find blank computer screens, or signs about closures. At Kiev’s central post office, a few bewildered customers milled about, holding parcels and letters, looking at a sign that said, “closed for technical reasons.”

The hackers compromised Ukrainian accounting software mandated to be used in various industries in the country, including government agencies and banks, according to researchers at Cisco Talos, the security division of the computer networking company. That allowed them to unleash their ransomware when the software, which is also used in other countries, was updated.

The ransomware spread for five days across Ukraine, and around the world, before activating Tuesday evening.

“If I had to guess, I would think this was done to send a political message,” said Craig Williams, the senior technical researcher at Talos.

Hmmmm.

One Kiev resident, Tetiana Vasylieva, was forced to borrow money from a relative after failing to withdraw money at four automated teller machines. At one ATM in Kiev belonging to the Ukrainian branch of the Austrian bank Raiffeisen, a message on the screen said the machine was not functioning.

Americans will be ripping each others throats out.

Ukraine’s Infrastructure Ministry, the postal service, the national railway company, and one of the country’s largest communications companies, Ukrtelecom, had been affected, Volodymyr Omelyan, the country’s infrastructure minister, said in a Facebook post.

Officials for the metro system in Kiev said card payments could not be accepted. The national power grid company Kievenergo had to switch off all of its computers, but the situation was under control, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency. Metro Group, a German company that runs wholesale food stores, said its operations in Ukraine had been affected.

At the Chernobyl plant, the computers affected by the attack collected data on radiation levels and were not connected to industrial systems at the site, where, though all reactors have been decommissioned, huge volumes of radioactive waste remain. Operators said radiation monitoring was being done manually.

That's actually now a paradise.

Cybersecurity researchers questioned whether collecting ransom was the true objective of the attack.

“It’s entirely possible that this attack could have been a smoke screen,” said Justin Harvey, the chief security officer for the Fidelis cybersecurity company. “If you are an evil doer and you wanted to cause mayhem, why wouldn’t you try to first mask it as something else?”

First of all, when did he start quoting George W. Bush?

Anyway, the ending is such an in-your-face laugher.

Yeah, wouldn't you try to run a false flag to cast blame on some innocent target, which will then be used to prosecute aggression against them?

"US officials have seen chemical weapons activity in Syria, Pentagon says" by Helene Cooper and Ben Hubbard New York Times  June 27, 2017

You would have thought they had learned after the halfhearted non-apology for the Iraq lies, but nope.

WASHINGTON — An official with US Central Command, which oversees combat operations in the Middle East, said Monday night that he had “no idea” to what the White House statement was referring.

No kidding. They see no activity, huh?

A White House official said Tuesday that relevant agencies, including the Pentagon, the State Department, the CIA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, had been involved in issuing the statement.

Like we are going to believe them.

Aren't they the same agencies that said Russia interfered with our election and collaborated with Trump?

It remained unclear whether the statement was based on raw intelligence that President Trump had chosen to declassify. Neither White House nor Pentagon officials said an attack, or retaliation, was imminent in Syria.

I see that phrase and I think big, swirling, steamer of a pile.

“The Department of Defense remains focused on operations to defeat ISIS,” Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Defense Department spokesman, said in a statement, using an acronym for the Islamic State. “Nevertheless, the continued brutality of the Assad regime and his use of chemical weapons presents a clear threat to regional stability and security, as well as the national security interests of the United States and our allies.”

Didn't we already go through all this about 14 years ago?

In Damascus, Ali Haidar, the Syrian minister for national reconciliation, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying Tuesday that the government did not have chemical weapons and that it would not use any.

Officials in Russia, which has provided military and political support to President Bashar Assad during the Syrian conflict, also rejected the accusations.

“I am not aware of any information about a threat that chemical weapons could be used,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said Tuesday. “Certainly, we consider such threats to the legitimate leadership of the Syrian Arab Republic unacceptable.”

A senior Russian lawmaker accused the United States of using the declaration about chemical weapons to plan an attack on Syria.

“Preparations for a new cynical and unprecedented provocation are underway,” Frants Klintsevich, member of the Russian Parliament, told state-owned news agency RIA Novosti.

The whole world sees it.

As if to punctuate his contempt for the Trump administration’s warning, Assad visited a Russian air base near Latakia in the western part of the country Tuesday, accompanied by General Valery V. Gerasimov, the Russian military’s chief of staff. Syrian news media, which reported the visit, also distributed a video clip of Assad climbing into the cockpit of a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 parked at the base, where Russia has conducted many of its bombing operations to support the government’s side in the war.

The Materially Insane on the Runaway Train to Krazy Town.

(I hate to go pedestrian in Visible Origami but certain events are taking place as certain trends are appearing and they signify dark portents for coming times. As was recently stated whatever happens in the world is of the world. Otherwise there is the ineffable and you MUST cast all your cares and concerns into his hands because the world is in Krazy Phase, being driven by the force of runaway Materialism. Step aside and let it go by. Do not jump onboard. That train is headed for Krazy Town.)

It is official. It is now official, Donald Trump is owned by the combination cabal of Organized Satanists and Israeli Dual Nationals. It could be no more clear than this. Here is a more clear picture of what is taking place. Meanwhile there are forces that have been at work for some time and the truth of this has been known to some for awhile.

The agents of the dark side and those who serve the light have many things in common, aside from the principal items such as intentions and objective. Both sides are dedicated and determined and have great faith in the force they serve. Both employ forms of prayer and ritual. I could go on but it's not germane to today's point.

Crazy is crazy and there are no barriers of social station, level of intelligence, economic standing... that can protect you from crazy; frankly... quite frankly, crazy can get in anywhere. Someone explain to me what difference it makes what the sexual designation of single use bathrooms is?

Materialism is legitimately insanity and the further in you go, the crazier you become. Since the entire planet is being swept up in it, crazy is the new normal. It is one of the most unfortunate things that people do not pay attention to what is going on around them in the larger and wider sense. Consonant with this, people believe that social and cultural changes come about all on their own and are the result of some sort of evolutionary drive. They do not see that most of the social and cultural changes, these days, are being engineered by malificants working in concert to destroy all harmony and symmetry and to usher in Hell on Earth.

We are being attacked at every level with the intention of making us sick at every level. Our sexual nature is being shaped with the objective of destroying the family unit. Our eating habits are being programmed so that our physical health will be ruined. Our moral sense is being warped by increments so that we will lose our common and native affection for one another. Our history is being manipulated in order to activate antipathy between the races and the sexes; events are set in motion to amplify hatred and suspicion over every difference that exists between us.

The primary offspring of Materialism is selfishness. Selfishness makes us uncaring of others. The population in the poorest locations is experiencing the highest birthrates. Half the world lives on around $2.50 a day. Almost 400 million people live on less that $1.90 a day. 8 men possess as much wealth as half of the world's people. These disparities are amazing but there is nothing accidental about any of it. Life is a dream and all the world's inhabitants live at some level of awareness in the dream. Very, very few are awake. Very many are deep into it and it is for this reason that an apocalypse comes around at regular intervals. It is for this reason that the Avatar appears at regular intervals. It is a natural cultural progression that the religious systems that endured for such a length of time would begin to disintegrate. They are not the only long standing pillars of the social infrastructure that are crumbling.

In times of apocalypse the truth is revealed and this changes the collective perceptions of the residents and that changes the world. At this point in time, falsehoods are riding roughshod over the collective mind and bizarre expositions of both temporary and chronic madness are everywhere to be seen. All through the changes people come and go across the dreamscape. They see and do not see. They hear and do not hear. The composition of individual Karma is expressed in the density of the dream as it manifests in each life. Only through a great and persistent intensity of effort or the visitation of Grace can one awaken. One's capacity for the intensity of effort is also reliant upon Karma. In most cases there is no industry whatsoever in respect of awakening. All of the intention is upon material aspirations for material gain and this is a prison house of perpetual suffering. One suffers with the absence of the objects of desire and then one suffers in the possession of the objects of desire. One suffers from the loss of the objects of desire but more especially from the disappointment in the objects of desire.

(I normally wouldn't interrupt a fellow blogger; however, there is that word again)

There is something missing. There is an emptiness that cannot be filled by any material gain no matter what it might be. The mind has convinced itself that what desire has provoked will prove to be the solution to the emptiness but it never is. Only in recognition of the indwelling self is peace possible. Still there is no peace until that blessed reunion takes place but there is a certainty and determination now. There is a faith that is like that peace which passes all understanding and it drives you like nothing that has ever come before. It gives a meaning to existence that was not present in other times when the monkey mind scrambled in every direction finding only temporary distractions.

A reader asked me the other day where she might go that was safe. Where could one go and be able to live on minimal resources. This person wanted to know where and in what state such a place could be found and I had no answer for that because every place involves a different combination of possibilities for each person. No one place is the same for everyone. This world is filled with people who have answers. Solutions fall so easily from their lips. Never before have we had so many experts on so many subjects and never before have so many of them been so consistently wrong. Now we have life coaches and people who converse with spirit guides and channel just about everyone who has ever been here and plenty of beings who live in other dimensions and in other solar systems.

Some years ago I was in New York and I came across one of those spiritual newspapers that are like the sex ad newspapers that can have well over a hundred pages. I was stunned the first time I saw one of those but... I digress. I came upon this spiritual newspaper that also had at least a hundred pages and dozens of those were filled with classified ads. I guess I had some time on my hands so I spent a good portion of time reading this newspaper and I came across no less than a dozen, maybe two dozen people who were channeling Jesus Christ; half a dozen channeled Moses. I can't remember how many were offering the Comte de St. Germain. How is it possible that so many people could be conduits for the same spiritual personality at the same time?

There are thousands and thousands of these people who bring us information and advice about how to live our lives and how to get what we want and how many of them are legitimate? I suspect there are very, very few. Meanwhile... the source of all things is resident within us. The answer to everything that could ever concern us is resident within the ineffable who is resident within us. We seem unable to ask with the necessary sincerity and faith. We seem incapable of believing in the one who is more real than any other thing and who is the source and origin of every good thing. This is due to the Karma that has chained us to the wheel of desire for all the temporary things we have been deceived into believing are the thing we want and life proves to us over and over through life after life that none of it is true or real.

Only the ineffable can resolve every concern. Only the ineffable can lift us out of the dream and into the real. Only the ineffable can conquer death and every sorrow and loss. Until one finds the clarity of vision to know this they will wander in dreams and the dreams will be populated with suffering and there will be no answers because there is only one answer and only one place where it can be found.

My life is not free from suffering. My life is not a constant flow of ease and serenity but I know where the answer is. I know that God is real and so I know that it is simply a matter of time and the circumstances that are necessary for me to come to the place where what is meant to happen can happen. Everything else is of no importance. Everything else is just images seen from a car window. Everyone passing by is me at some point along the way; me when I knew a great deal less and me when I knew a great deal more. Now there is only one thing I am certain of and so... it is just a matter of time. Is time even real? Are the necessary circumstances real? I know that God is real and so it is a certainty that the moment will come that the ineffable will appear in such a way that... and it is at this point where words fail me once more and I can only hope that the time will come when more can be said.

"Your robot will serve you now — it might make deliveries, too" by Janelle Nanos Globe Staff  June 27, 2017

Cafe Gita, a semi-autonomous, cargo-carrying robot that will deliver once it masters its domain [and] developed by the makers of the Vespa scooter, derives its name from an Italian phrase meaning a short trip. The thigh-high device looks like the love child of a Roomba and BB-8, the newest android in the “Star Wars” universe, and was created in Charlestown at the Piaggio Fast Forward innovation lab. The team designed Gita to serve humans as they go about their errands; it can follow its owner, toting home groceries from a shopping trip, or it can be dispatched alone or in groups as a delivery service, rolling down sidewalks to bring packages to your doorstep.

With a 40-pound cargo capacity, the robotic vehicle is being positioned as a low-carbon alternative to cars, autonomous or otherwise, and more realistic than delivery by drone.

“We don’t think that the delivery of pizzas by aerial drones is a strong proposition,” Piaggio’s chief executive, Harvard professor Jeffrey Schnapp, said.

Gita’s arrival kicks off ArtScienceConverged, a series of weeklong sensory “exhibits” at the Cafe ArtScience restaurant, which will culminate in the World Frontiers Forum this fall. Over the next few weeks, the restaurant will unveil menu items inspired by innovative thinkers who will attend the conference in Cambridge Oct. 1-3. Think a Temple Grandin-themed cocktail, a “food opera” in the spirit of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, or “The Last Supper” — an entire menu of foods that will be wiped out by climate change, served by former White House chef Sam Kass.

Cafe ArtScience has undergone its own changes over the past few months.

Todd Maul, a founding partner and world-class bartender who is as handy with a centrifuge as he is with a cocktail shaker, announced he was leaving earlier this month. That came on the heels of the news in May that executive chef Brandon Baltzley would be stepping down to work on other projects.

The restaurant has been closed for two weeks in preparation for the exhibits, David Edwards, a Harvard professor and serial entrepreneur who has attempted to digitize scent, said, and will no longer operate its adjacent gallery space, La Laboratoire. The intention was to bring more of the curated experience into the restaurant itself, he said, declining to discuss any new hires, aside from Gita.

If adding a robot to the team feels like a gimmick, that’s kind of the point. Edwards acknowledges that part of Gita’s appeal is its in-your-face ability to force people to reconsider the way they acquire their food, whether in a restaurant or on the street. Using Gita as a delivery bot will bring the restaurant’s innovations to the public, he said, and it’s the direction the food-delivery industry is headed, anyway. He envisions a day in the near future when Cambridge residents can sign up to receive regular meals from the restaurant. Perhaps Cafe Gita could even help feed the homeless, he said.

So all those fast food, minimum wage jobs will also be gone.

“Anyone can deliver food, in a catering sense, but we’re more than just about food,” Edwards said. “We’re interested in bringing this spirit of frontiers and the future and the experimentation that is in so many ways unsettling about contemporary life.

“The notion that Gita might play a role as a mediator of the experience of the cafe really was intriguing.”

New Yorker journalist Malcolm Gladwell, wellness author Deepak Chopra, and scientist George Church — who has been called a “maverick geneticist” and is trying to bring back the extinct wooly mammoth — highlight the roster of speakers for HUBweek, organizers announced Tuesday.

HUBweek was founded by The Boston Globe, Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Globe Managing Director Linda Pizzuti Henry is chairwoman of the HUBweek board.

Oh, God, it's more $elf-$erving promotion.

Why not? It is written of and for the elite of Bo$ton.

In the past, HUBweek events were scheduled at venues around the city and region. This year, the first two days of events will take place across a number of city and regional venues; the program for the rest of the week will be concentrated at the exhibition space on City Hall Plaza, said Brendan Ryan, executive director of HUBweek.

One of this year’s big-name, marquee events likely will be Gladwell’s interview of surgeon Atul Gawande. They will discuss innovations that will change how medical care is delivered. Gladwell is the best-selling author of “The Tipping Point,” “Blink,” and “Outliers.” Gawande is a surgeon, author, and researcher who practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Fady Saad, cofounder and partnerships director of MassRobotics, said he has been involved in HUBweek planning, particularly in organizing “Demo Day,” in which start-up companies across more than a dozen industries will showcase their ideas.

“We will reach out to the robotics community in Boston and New England and attract the best robotics, automation and AI start-ups to come and show the great stuff they’re working on,” Saad said in a telephone interview. He said he anticipates HUBweek will have representatives from companies working on self-driving cars.

Saad also expects a showcase of specialists who create robotic arms and the software that makes them work. “Those are growing subset of robotics companies that we see in the Greater Boston area, and I’m sure many of those companies will be presenters.”

The HUBweek festival has drawn an estimated 20,000 registered attendees each year since its debut in 2015.

A team from Booz Allen Hamilton compiled and reviewed HUBweek attendee data from last year, Ryan said. They found that 80 percent of attendees were from metro Boston; the remaining 20 percent came from 40 states and 49 countries. The event drew a crowd heavily made up of young people, with 39 percent in their 20s. About 58 percent of attendees were women and 42 percent male, according to Ryan.

Many of the HUBweek events will be free.....

I no longer have any appetite.
