A second-grade teacher at a Newton school, already accused of participating in a global child pornography ring, was arraigned yesterday on charges that he sexually assaulted a young girl and filmed the attack several years ago in the Boston area.
David Ettlinger, 34, of Allston, pleaded not guilty in West Roxbury District Court to charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and posing a child in a state of nudity, according to the office of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
Ettlinger’s lawyer, Greg L. Johnson, did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.
Ettlinger, a teacher at the Underwood Elementary School, was arrested at his home Tuesday, authorities said, and his computers allegedly contained multiple images of children under 18 in sexual situations.
Among the files discovered were images of Ettlinger assaulting the victim, whose age is not being released to protect her privacy, Conley’s office said. Those images resulted in yesterday’s charges, prosecutors said.
On Tuesday, Ettlinger pleaded not guilty to related charges of possession of child pornography in Brighton District Court.
He is also facing a charge in federal court in Louisiana of participating in a child exploitation enterprise in connection with a global child pornography ring known as Dreamboard, said Conley’s spokesman, Jake Wark....
Newton School Superintendent David A. Fleishman said he is moving to fire Ettlinger because of the charges.
He said there is no evidence that Ettlinger harmed any students at Underwood and that school officials will meet with parents tonight to discuss the case and offer suggestions for speaking with their children about it.

Nearly 200 parents gathered last night in the gymnasium of Underwood Elementary School in Newton to grapple with how the man their children knew as Mr. E. could be the same person arrested this week on charges that he sexually assaulted a young girl and filmed it.
David Ettlinger, 34, of Allston, had been a teacher in Newton public schools for 12 years. For the last four, he has taught second grade at Underwood.
Parents described him as charming, committed to his students both in and out of the classroom, and strict about homework.
But a darker picture has emerged.
On Wednesday, Ettlinger pleaded not guilty in West Roxbury District Court to charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and posing a child in a state of nudity, according to the office of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
Ettlinger pleaded not guilty Tuesday to related charges of possession of child pornography in Brighton District Court.
Ettlinger was allegedly part of a global child pornography ring called Dreamboard.
He is facing a charge in federal court in Louisiana of participating in a child exploitation enterprise in connection with his Dreamboard activities, according to a spokesman for the district attorney.
Police Captain Paul Anastasia said there is no evidence that Ettlinger harmed any child in Newton.
At last night’s meeting, Michael Jellinek, president of Newton-Wellesley Hospital and chief of child psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, answered questions from distraught parents who wondered how to explain to their children that a man they trusted had allegedly done terrible things to other children....
In addition to teaching second grade at Underwood, Ettlinger worked as a camp counselor in the 1990s and rock climbing teacher until about 2008 for Newton’s Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center, according to Carol Trager, vice president of strategy and marketing. There have been no allegations of abuse, she said.

Newton parents were shocked by this week’s events.
“I’d seen him around; he seemed like just an average teacher,’’ said Marisa Morrill, who has a child in fifth grade who was not in Ettlinger’s class.
“That’s the scariest part of all,’’ she said. “We never thought that anything would be wrong at Underwood.’’

A second-grade Newton teacher accused of sexually assaulting a young girl and filming it worked as a camp counselor and rock climbing teacher for Newton’s Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center, according to Carol Trager, vice president of strategy and marketing.
David Ettlinger, 34, of Allston, pleaded not guilty yesterday in West Roxbury District Court to charges of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and posing a child in a state of nudity, according to the office of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.

Trager said Ettlinger was a camp counselor in the mid-90s at JCC’s Grossman Camp, a summer day camp for children aged four-and-a-half to 15. She said he taught a rock climbing class for elementary school students as recently as 2008.
She said she wasn’t sure how long he held either position, but that he was never a full-time employee.
There were never any complaints about Ettlinger, she said.
“We are extremely scrupulous and we supervise our staff very carefully,” she said. “We heard absolutely nothing about him.”
Trager said that it was unlikely Ettlinger had ever been alone with any children.
“Rock climbing occurs in a gym that’s open, that you can see on all sides,” she said. “All the camp counselors are supervised. It’s an outdoor camp.”
She said that the JCC had received a handful of calls from parents about the news that Ettlinger worked there, but that they were all “highly supportive.”
Asked whether she thought Community Center staff would be double-checking old files to make sure that no incidents involving Ettlinger went unreported, she said she didn’t think so.
“We don’t anticipate that anything is going to be reported,” she said.
Ettlinger is also facing accusations in Louisiana of participating in a child exploitation enterprise in connection to his Dreamboard activities, according to a Suffolk District Attorney spokesman.
