Placing My Bet

It's a loser because I plunked down dough on a Boston Sunday Globe.

But while we are out there....

"Gambling priest gets 3 years prison in Vegas case" January 13, 2012|Ken Ritter, Associated Press

Muffled sobs erupted Friday in a courtroom packed with supporters of a Roman Catholic priest who was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison and ordered to repay $650,000 he acknowledged embezzling from his northwest Las Vegas parish to support his gambling habit.

Oh, thank God he wasn't pooper-pumping!!!

Hallelujah!

Monsignor Kevin McAuliffe, 59, stood straight and offered no reaction as U.S. District Judge James Mahan credited him for accepting responsibility for looting parish votive candle, prayer and gift shop funds for eight years, but faulted him for “hedging his bet’’ by blaming it on a gambling addiction.

“You abused a position of trust, Mr. McAuliffe,’’ the judge said. He dispensed with any church title for the priest who hid a weakness for casinos and video poker from parishioners who know him as Father Kevin. “You betrayed people who depended on you.’’

Newspapers do it all the time and no one makes a big deal.

"Las Vegas police shooting draws outcry" December 16, 2011|Associated Press

LAS VEGAS - The NAACP in Las Vegas wants a federal investigation and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada is calling for an independent inquiry of Las Vegas police practices after a police shooting that killed an unarmed Gulf War veteran behind the wheel of his car in a condominium complex.

The calls for outside oversight came days after Sheriff Douglas Gillespie pleaded for patience from the public and promised a thorough internal investigation of the slaying of Stanley Lavon Gibson on Monday....

"26 homes lost in Reno fire and 2,000 evacuated" by Associated Press, January 21, 2012

RENO, Nev. - Reno has not seen a winter this dry in more than 120 years. So residents welcomed a forecast that a storm was due to blow across the Sierra Nevada this week.

Instead, as many as 10,000 found themselves fleeing their homes while howling winds gusting to 82 miles per hour pushed a fire toward them, destroying 26 homes and torching thousands of acres.

As the fire eased yesterday, residents faced another threat: the storm was expected to bring high winds and a burst of rain and snow that could cause flash flooding on the charred land....

Time to round it up and ride outta here:

"Judge refuses to stop horse roundup" Associated Press, January 28, 2012

RENO, Nev. - A federal judge in Nevada who handed horse-protection advocates a rare victory last fall has rejected their latest bid to block government roundups of free-roaming mustangs in the West, saying they will have to go to Congress if they think the animals are being treated inhumanely and need more protection....

The Bureau of Land Management said in a formal review made public in December that some mustangs in the Triple B complex were whipped in the face, kicked in the head, dragged by a rope around the neck, and repeatedly shocked with electrical prods, but the agency concluded none of the mistreatment rose to the level of being inhumane.

Then we are free to try such things out on them, right?

Sure as hell looks like TORTURE to ME!!

The government’s wild horse program is intended to protect wild horse herds and the rangelands that support them.
