Campus Hate Humbles Kumble

I just can't help feeling it is another agenda-pushing hoax no matter who did it. Sorry.

"UMass Amherst investigates racist messages in dorms" by Matt Rocheleau | Globe Correspondent   October 16, 2014

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is investigating racist vandalism that targeted students in their dormitories over the past week.

Three messages, all found inside dorm buildings in the Southwest residential part of campus, called for killing black and Mexican people, according to The Daily Hampshire Gazette.

“Such expressions of hate and intolerance have no place on our campus,” Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy wrote in a campuswide e-mail this week.

*******

Several students told the Gazette they had not experienced racism before at UMass.

Campus spokesman Edward Blaguszewski said that while racist incidents are uncommon on campus, it is important for the school and its community to condemn such acts.

So who would want to be fanning up race hate at this moment?

Josh Odam, who said he found a racist message scrawled in all capital letters on his door, wrote an Op-Ed Thursday in the Daily Collegian student newspaper.

“This cowardly act of hate speech not only violated my space, but permeated the ‘harambee’ community we have worked so hard to build,” wrote Odam, secretary of diversity for the Student Government Association. Harambee is an East African word that means unity or working together as a community.

“To be blunt, whoever did this messed with the wrong one,” he added. “They went to the wrong door, the wrong floor, and the wrong community. We will not stand for this ignorance on our campus and will hold the university and ourselves directly accountable to ensure the safety of black students, students of color, and the entire population.”

Blaguszewski said a group of concerned students organized a meeting on campus Wednesday night to discuss the incidents. More than 100 people attended, including Subbaswamy and other university administrators.

In his e-mail, Subbaswamy invited students to attend a previously scheduled meeting Thursday afternoon on diversity, equity, and inclusion at UMass....

"UMass student accused of writing racist messages; UMass bans man from campus" by Matt Rocheleau | Globe Correspondent   October 21, 2014

A University of Massachusetts Amherst student has been ordered to stay away from the college while he faces charges in connection with two racist messages found scrawled on the doors of campus dorm rooms this month.

Devin Ayres, 20, of North Andover, was arraigned Monday in Eastern Hampshire District Court on one count of vandalizing property, a felony; and one count of property damage to intimidate, a misdemeanor, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Ayres, who was arrested late Friday, was also ordered by a judge to stay away from the campus and individuals who were targeted by the messages, prosecutors said. He posted bail, which was set at $200, and is due back in court Nov. 21.

UMass officials declined to comment on Ayres’s status other than to say he “is no longer on our campus.”

Campus police launched an investigation into racist vandalism after several messages were found earlier this month.

Some of the messages called for killing black and Mexican people, according to media reports.

At least five discriminatory messages have been found, campus officials said. UMass police are continuing to investigate the other messages.

“Such expressions of hate and intolerance have no place on our campus,” chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy wrote in a campuswide e-mail. “We condemn language intended to marginalize or make any member of our community unsafe, and we will aggressively investigate this matter for criminal and administrative reviews.”

At campus gatherings over the past week, students have expressed concern about the messages, condemned the graffiti, and called for a more respectful climate.

So who is Devin Ayres and why can't I find him, and who was Chloe Malast?

"A University of Massachusetts Amherst student from Needham died in her dorm room over the weekend, university officials said Monday. The student was identified as Chloe Malast in an e-mail from Senior Associate Dean of Students David C. Vaillancourt. The 21-year-old died unattended in her McNamara Hall dorm room, Vaillancourt said. No foul play is suspected, said Mary Carey, spokeswoman for Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan. An autopsy will be performed."
