At the Iowa State Farce

Looks like I will be cutting the visit short:

"GOP candidates trade barbs in Iowa debate" by Matt Viser, Globe Staff / August 12, 2011

AMES, Iowa -Presumed front-runner Mitt Romney found himself in an encounter with critics of his positions at the Iowa State Fair. Challenged to raise corporate taxes, Romney saidcorporations are people, my friend’’ and fended off a pointed question about Social Security cuts....

The candidates also disagreed over several social issues that are top priorities among many Republican voters in Iowa, with the sharpest contrast over same-sex marriage. Romney suggested that states should not have the power to decide the legality of gay marriage - as his home state did when he was governor - and made the case for a federal amendment to the Constitution that would define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Representative Ron Paul of Texas said such a move would be an overreach. “I want less government,’’ he said. “If we have to have regulations, let the states do it.’’

He's right.

And that's more than he received in my printed paper, which simply said he was a participant.

Then the WALL went up.

"Romney hailed tax hikes similar to ones he now slams; Presentations aimed at Mass. rating upgrade" by Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff / August 12, 2011

As a presidential candidate, Republican Mitt Romney says he opposes revenue-boosting tax increases. But back when he was Massachusetts’ governor, he bragged about them.

The Romney administration in 2004 and 2005 quietly highlighted the state’s recent tax and fee hikes as part of an effort to persuade the financial rating agencies Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings to improve the state’s bond ratings....

He really is an empty suit.

"Congressman safe after home invasion" July 18, 2011|Associated Press

DES MOINES - A home invasion at Representative Leonard Boswell’s Iowa farm ended when his 22-year-old grandson got a shotgun and aimed it at the intruder, according to a statement from the congressman’s office. No one was seriously injured.

The incident started about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when an armed man came in through the front door, attacked Boswell’s daughter, Cindy Brown, and demanded money, the statement said. Boswell, 77, heard his daughter’s screams, came into the entryway, and attempted to disarm the intruder.

As they struggled, Boswell’s grandson, Mitchell Brown, got a shotgun from another room. When he pointed the shotgun at the intruder, the man fled into the fields around the house outside Lamoni....

No arrests have been made....

Smells like a s*** story to me.
