The Swedes and the Swiss

You won't mind if I quickly slice through what the Globe has given us these last few months?

"3 charged with plotting to kill Swedish artist" December 07, 2011|Associated Press

STOCKHOLM - Three men were charged yesterday with plotting to stab to death a Swedish artist who has faced numerous threats from Muslim extremists for depicting the prophet Mohammed as a dog.

The men, ages 24 to 26 and of Somali and Iraqi origin, were arrested in the city of Goteborg on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

According to the charges, the suspects were planning to use knives to kill Lars Vilks, whose 2007 drawing of Mohammed offended many Muslims and rekindled a debate over free speech and Islam that raged a year earlier when a Danish newspaper printed 12 caricatures of the prophet.

It's called provocation.

Images of Mohammed, even favorable ones, are considered blasphemous by many Muslims.

The evidence included wiretapped phone conversations between the suspects and a note pad belonging to one of them, said a prosecutor.

Translation: it is ANOTHER intelligence agency operation and frame-up!!

Man, THIS IS GETTING REALLY, REALLY OLD!

An art gallery celebrating the opening of an exhibition was evacuated in connection with the arrests. Vilks, 65, had mentioned on his blog that he planned to visit the exhibition, but he did not attend the opening ceremony.

"A new wave of execution-style shootings in Sweden’s third largest city has left police puzzled, raising concerns that the city of Malmo has become a magnet for gang-related killings....

Yeah, maybe you Swedish cops should focus on the real crimes for a change, sigh.

Time to swish over to Switzerland:

"Snow-free slopes stall Swiss skiing" December 02, 2011|Associated Press

VERBIER, Switzerland - Unusually warm, dry weather has Switzerland’s ski resorts on edge.

Newspapers front pages, weather reports, and ski websites are showing grim images of snow-free slopes, threatening the traditional start of the ski season on the first weekend of December.

Like many resorts, Davos, in Switzerland’s southeast state of Graubuenden, has fired up its snow cannons in an effort to put some artificial snow on the trails.

But even the best Swiss snow engineering is struggling because temperatures are too high....

Not these days. Europe in a catastrophic deep freeze.

I imagine they are not snow free now, either.

Another snow job:

"Swiss charge 3 with nuclear smuggling role" December 14, 2011|Associated Press

GENEVA - Three Swiss engineers - a father and his two sons - have been charged with breaking arms export laws by aiding a Pakistani-led nuclear smuggling ring that supplied Libya’s atomic weapons program, prosecutors said yesterday.

Libya? Khadafy shut those down years ago, and the Pakistan thing is old news (.

The formal indictment follows almost a decade of politically charged investigation by Swiss authorities that lifted the veil on one of the most successful international intelligence operations to stop nuclear proliferation to rogue states.

Did it really (keep reading)?

Urs Tinner, 46, his brother Marco, 43, and their father Friedrich, 74, are accused of providing technology and know-how to the nuclear smuggling network of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the architect of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program, according to a statement from the federal prosecutors office in Bern....

Politically sensitive aspects of the investigation probably won’t be publicly aired....

What sensitive aspects (keep reading)?

An unidentified fourth defendant who prosecutors said played a subordinate role will be charged in a separate legal proceeding with breaking Swiss arms export laws.

That must be the INTELLIGENCE AGENCY CASE OFFICER!

Prosecutors said in their statement the question of the Tinners’ cooperation with the CIA remains unresolved, because the Swiss government has denied a request to open a criminal investigation into the issue.

Excuse me?

Smells like a cover-up to me.

"Nuclear proliferation: No AQ Khan network, only western suppliers; Recently released report says suppliers were collaborating with CIA and M16" by Shahidur Rehman, January 6, 2011

ISLAMABAD: There was no AQ Khan  nuclear proliferation network; there were only Western suppliers of nuclear wares. This is borne out by the report submitted recently by a Swiss Magistrate into the affairs of three members of Tinner family.

The report has spelt out that there was as such no AQ Khan network but several members of the so-called network (actually suppliers) were collaborating with CIA and MI6.

The report submitted by a Swiss Magistrate into the affairs of three members of Tinner family last month has spelt out in words what previous accounts of Dr. A.Q. Khan saga had stated between the lines i.e. -several members of the so-called network were collaborating with CIA and MI6.

It has been established beyond doubt that three Tinners,- father Frederick Tinner and his two sons Marco and Urs Tinners were working for CIA at least since 2000 till Dr. Khan’s fall from high pedestal on February 4, 2004 on charges of proliferation to Libya, Iran and North Korea.

Magistrate Andreas Muller has.... investigated proliferation activities of Tinners for four years and the reports that a huge drove of documents and electronic files including allegedly “a highly sophisticated Pakistani bomb design” were destroyed by the Swiss authorities on pressure from CIA....

In February 2008 when Swiss President had acknowledged that document and files relating to Tinners have been destroyed by Swiss authorities, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman had regretted that while the design is being stated of Pakistani origin, Pakistan government was never taken into confidence.

Dr. Khan had told Kyodo News Agency that the destruction of the documents have wiped out some proof that would have proved that he was innocent of the wrongdoing heaped on his doorstep.

The observations by the Swiss judge about CIA’s complicity in the whole affair has partially vindicated the stance taken by Pakistan government and Dr. Khan.

The whole story of how CIA carried out several sting operations to bring down Dr. Khan and who played a role in it would be brought out once Tinners go on trial....
