Slow Saturday Special: Rhode Island Restrooms Need Redesigning

"Newport council puts off Cliff Walk restrooms

Plans to put permanent restrooms at Newport’s famed Cliff Walk have been put off for now, after members of the City Council expressed reservations about the design. The Newport Daily News reported that the council decided Wednesday not to authorize a contract to buy a prefabricated concrete restroom. Council members want more time to review the contract and decide whether to find a new contractor. Councilwoman Naomi Neville, an architect, called the design ‘‘pretty ugly.’’ About 800,000 people visit the Cliff Walk every year. Portable toilets are available, but city officials said they have sometimes been tipped over or even thrown over the edge of the cliff."
