Home Invader Apologizes

Police in Woburn and Winchester are searching for a home invader who, when confronted by residents, politely apologizes before he runs away.

The “polite” burglar has broken into several homes in the Horn Pond area intending to steal from the homeowners, police in Woburn and Winchester said in a statement. He always breaks in in the early morning, either through a first-floor or basement window, police said. He works alone and police believe he has broken into both occupied and unoccupied homes.

Several residents who have confronted the intruder described him as “very polite and apologetic as he runs away,” police said.

The suspect is described as either a dark-skinned Hispanic or light-skinned black man in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall with black marks or acne scars on his face. He has been seen in a dirty, light-gray, zippered hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Though he has not been violent in previous instances, police warn that his behavior could escalate.

“Outward behavior should not lull residents into a false sense of security,” said Woburn Police Chief Robert J. Ferullo Jr. “This is a dangerous felon who breaks into people’s homes, often while they are asleep inside.”
