A Suffolk County grand jury indicted former Dorchester funeral home director Joseph V. O’Donnell Wednesday on 278 counts, including operating a funeral home without a license, embezzlement, and larceny of 11 bodies.

Police arrested O’Donnell, 56, in April on charges of conducting funerals without a license after receiving tips from the state’s funeral licensing body and two of his former clients.

While O’Donnell was in custody on that charge, police found 77 human remains and 12 decomposing bodies in storage facilities he owned in Somerville and Weymouth, according to a statement from the Suffolk district attorney’s office....
