Slow Saturday Special: Di$connect in Connecticut Gubernatorial Contest

Money pouring into Conn. governor’s race despite system

Now both will show how much fealty they can $wear to the war machine:

"United Technologies looms large in governor’s race" by Stephen Singer | Associated Press   October 04, 2014

HARTFORD — Tax credits worth hundreds of millions of dollars for Connecticut’s largest private employer have become a flashpoint in the governor’s race, with Republican Tom Foley decrying the aid as corporate welfare and Governor Dannel P. Malloy, a Democrat, saying it is crucial to keep United Technologies Corp. in the state.

I thought the Democrats were the antiwar party. WTF?

Legislation signed this year by Malloy allows the aerospace giant to use accumulated tax credits for the millions it is spending to upgrade and improve operations.

In a state that has been shedding prized manufacturing jobs for years, Malloy and fellow Democrats who run the Legislature say the deal will cement the company’s ties for more than a decade.

Corporations may be built upon a foundation of cement, but the rest can all be cleared away at any time for the bottom line.

‘‘I’m certainly proud that we kept United Technologies ... Pratt & Whitney engines, and others in our state,’’ Malloy said Tuesday at a debate with Foley.

Foley, a Greenwich businessman, contends that the conglomerate, which posted revenue of $62.63 billion last year, is hardly in need of public assistance. He said he would prefer to focus instead on job creation incentives for small businesses.

Yeah, no kidding! But that's government in AmeriKa today!

‘‘You have more confidence in your policy with respect to corporate welfare than I have,’’ Foley responded in the debate.

Job creation and the economy are key issues in the race for the governor’s seat. The state has regained 60 percent of the jobs that were lost between March 2008 and February 2010 because of the Great Recession and still struggles with stubbornly high unemployment.

Then how in the world can this economy be in recovery? WTF?

Malloy has pointed to incentive programs for major state employers as a key success of his first term. His ‘‘First Five’’ program is intended to consolidate tax credits to draw the first five businesses that invest $25 million in Connecticut and create 200 jobs over five years.

Foley said he supports tax incentives for small businesses. In addition, he would order state development agencies to focus on supporting seven industries such as highly engineered manufacturing and health care, but his plan does not outline specifically what his administration would do to help boost job growth.

He promises to persuade companies to do business in Connecticut.

Good thing Democrats are the party of the environment.

Both believe in law-and-order:

"Police investigate death of man hit twice by stun gun

Connecticut State Police are investigating the death of a medical school graduate from the Bahamas who became unresponsive after New London officers used a stun gun on him for the second time in eight hours. Authorities say Lashano Gilbert, 31, died at a New London hospital shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday. An autopsy was planned on Sunday. New London officers arrested Gilbert in connection with an attempted carjacking about 7 p.m. Friday. City police say they were forced to use a stun gun on Gilbert twice, once when he resisted arrest Friday evening and again when he attacked officers at the police station Saturday morning."

It's always the same old story from the murderous police, isn't it?
