Slow Saturday Special: Mocking You With These Obituaries

"Jerrie Mock, 88; first female pilot to circle globe" by Dan Sewell | Associated Press   October 04, 2014

CINCINNATI — Geraldine ‘‘Jerrie’’ Mock, an Ohio housewife who became the first female pilot to fly solo around the world, was inspired as a child by Amelia Earhart. But while she considered Earhart her hero, Mrs. Mock said she did not dwell on the aviation pioneer’s fate as she made her own journey 27 years after Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared in the South Pacific.

‘‘Nobody was going to tell me I couldn’t do it because I was a woman,’’ said Mrs. Mock, who wore a skirt and blouse on her flight and put on high heels after landings.

A life-size bronze statue depicting Mrs. Mock holding a globe was unveiled in April at Port Columbus Airport on the 50th anniversary of her flight, which was also commemorated with an exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum.

‘‘Her legacy of dedication, perseverance, and belief in [herself] will forever inspire a community and a nation,’’ Elaine Roberts, president of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, said in a statement Wednesday.

Mrs. Mock leaves a daughter, after being preceded in death by her two sons. She had 12 grandchildren.

Grandson Chris Flocken said his grandmother did not want a funeral service. Instead, as she had requested, she will be cremated, with her ashes to be scattered from a plane flying over the Gulf of Mexico.

"Raymond DeVoe Jr., 85; coined ‘dead cat bounce’ phrase" by Laurence Arnold | Bloomberg News   October 04, 2014

NEW YORK — Raymond F. DeVoe Jr. — who wrote the DeVoe Report, a financial newsletter, for 35 years — has died at age 85.

**************

One of his journalistic contributions was a warning to beware of the ‘‘dead cat bounce,’’ a brief upward move by a stock or other investment that has otherwise dropped steadily. A dead cat thrown off a tall building might bounce slightly when it hits the sidewalk, he said, but it is ‘‘still a dead cat.’’

In a July 2000 interview with Newsday, Mr. DeVoe expressed concerns about the surge in Internet-related stocks.

‘‘This is the most dangerous market I’ve ever seen in the 45 years I’ve been on Wall Street,’’ he said when what became known as the dot-com bubble was losing air. ‘‘You could say this stock market is a type of legal Ponzi scheme, where the money keeps coming in, and as long as it does and takes care of the people exiting the market, the market can stay high almost indefinitely. Valuations have been sort of dismissed.’’

***************

Since 2001, he independently provided his four-page newsletter to subscribers, including more than 100 Wall Street firms, his daughter-in-law said, adding that he was working on a book titled, ‘‘Is There Intelligent Life on Wall Street?’’

I think they have an$wered that question.

"Fashion blogger Karina Moreira, 16, dies after battle with cancer" by Alexa McMahon | Globe Staff   October 03, 2014

Karina Moreira, 16, whose blog “chic by karina” caught the attention of supermodel Gisele Bundchen, Taylor Swift, and thousands of followers on social media, died Thursday evening, according to her mother Daniela Xavier.

“I am so proud of [Karina],” she said. “With everything that she went through, she still had hope and faith in God. She never gave up or complained.”

Moreira, a Malden resident, was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2011 at 13. In late 2012, she was in remission and began a fashion blog sharing playful advice. But last year the cancer returned. She was being treated for osteosarcoma at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The family posted on the chic by karina Facebook page to inform friends and fans of her death. Bundchen sent her condolences to the family through Instagram Thursday night.

A fan of the blog, the supermodel made a surprise visit to the Moreiras’ home last December and made a video with Karina. Bundchen told Xavier: “I came here to bring something, but I am going home with something in my heart.”

Since the visit, Karina and Bundchen have stayed in contact through email and social media, her mother said. For New York Fashion Week earlier this fall, Bundchen arranged tickets for Karina to attend, helping the young fashionista check off an item from her bucket list.

“It was Karina’s dream come true,” said her mother.

Karina’s optimism and style attracted droves of fans to her blog and Instagram page, especially from her home country of Brazil. She appeared on a popular Brazilian news show called “Fantastico” in January.

She also video blogged for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and was chosen as a 2014 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk Hero.

“She had a mission here to learn no matter what,” said Xavier. “I feel like a special mom, I have a special angel.”

The family will hold a public service from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Malden High School. Visitors are asked to wear white.

UPDATE:

"Rare cancer recoveries could be key to wider treatments" by Carolyn Y. Johnson | Globe Staff   October 08, 2014

Physicians have traditionally viewed the rare cancer patients who bounce back from near-certain death as inspiring anecdotes, not science. But a study published by a Boston team Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine highlights a radical shift in thinking: researchers are harnessing a powerful arsenal of biomedical tools to unlock the secrets of individual “exceptional responders.”

***********

Last month, the National Cancer Institute launched a nationwide search for exceptional responders as part of a pilot study that will use DNA sequencing and other tools to understand why the therapies worked. Those results will be compiled in a central database, with the hope the insights could guide the design of new clinical trials and personalized treatments.

In the meantime, individual hospitals are setting up their own programs....
