IRBIL, Iraq — The battle is largely a contest between the Iranian-favored coalition of Shi’ite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki along with followers of anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr against a Sunni-backed secular coalition led by former prime minister Ayad Allawi. 

You can pretty quickly see which side the agenda-pushing media is taking.

At stake is whether Iraq has a government of both the Shi’ites and the Sunnis or a Shi’ite-dominated government with the Sunnis largely in opposition, a recipe that many worry will turn the country back to the sectarian violence of a few years ago....  

And "Al-CIA-Duh" will make sure of it.

Recently momentum has moved in Maliki’s direction. After gaining the support of Sadr, who used to be one of Maliki’s staunchest opponents, he also picked up the support of a smaller coalition over the weekend.

The Kurds, who rule the three northern Iraqi provinces, are thought to support Maliki’s reelection bid so long as President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, is allowed to remain in office.

Officials in Allawi’s Iraqiya coalition said yesterday that they were still demanding the prime minister’s office, but an international observer with knowledge of the talks said there is grudging acceptance within Iraqiya that Maliki will keep his position....

BAGHDAD — The United States is increasing pressure on the Kurds to yield to Iraqiya on the presidency, worried that Iraqiya, which is headed by secular Shi’ite Ayad Allawi, will not be properly represented in the next government....   

And that Maliki has spun out of control.

I thought we were supposed to respect Iraqi wishes no matter what government they came up with.

Meanwhile, the Shi’ite incumbent prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, is trying to garner the backing he needs to keep his post without ceding any power.  

Now he is power hungry. 

Maliki emerged as the likeliest candidate for the top job in the new government when he secured the support of the Sadrists, a populist Shi’ite political movement opposed to the US presence here....

Senators John McCain, Republican of Arizona, and Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, met with Kurdish officials during a visit to Iraq this week to ask them to drop their claim to the presidency. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden made the same request in recent phone calls, said Mahmoud Othman, a Kurdish lawmaker. 

Look at the BIG GUNS being DRAWN by the U.S.!

“The pressure on the Kurds is increasing,’’ Othman said. “I don’t think the blocs can reach an agreement in time.’’

The government-formation process has been slowed by allegations of electoral fraud, constitutional disagreements, and continuing violence. Last week, more than 118 people were killed in bomb attacks and a brutal takeover of a Baghdad church.

BAGHDAD — Only three hours into a parliamentary session called yesterday to begin the process of approving an agreement on a new unity government, members of an alliance led by former Iraqi prime minister Ayad Allawi left in protest.

While the Sunni walkout did not immediately scuttle the agreement, which was reached only the night before, it was a stark illustration of the frailty of a broad coalition that was not yet 24-hours old and was a portent of the political struggles ahead.

The administration of President Obama has insisted during Iraq’s long political deadlock that a new government should mirror the will of the electorate. It got its wish: The government — if it holds together — will be fractured and unwieldy, rife with suspicion, hobbled by a shaky grasp of the rule of law, and prone to collapse, or at least chaos. 

In other words, just like the AmeriKan government.

Despite reaching a tentative agreement, Iraq’s leaders continued to squabble over positions and power....

Just like U.S. politics.

Maliki, a dour, divisive Shi’ite leader, secured the official nomination for a second term as prime minister as Parliament ended its session last night.

No longer our guy!

Although many politicians spoke of national unity after the agreement was announced Wednesday night, there was little in evidence of it either in Parliament or on the streets....

Late yesterday, the new 325-member Parliament reelected Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, as president, although he failed to win the required two-thirds majority on the first vote after Allawi’s walkout. Talabani won a second vote, as allowed by law, with a simple majority of 195 votes, hardly a mandate after the behind-closed-doors agreement among major factions that broke the impasse.  

Our candidates never get them (or if they do they ignore them), and the politicians meet behind closed doors all the time.

Osama al-Najafi, a Sunni from Allawi’s alliance, was earlier elected speaker of Parliament, with a Kurd and Shi’ite as his deputies. (He joined Allawi in leaving the session but returned to oversee the vote for president.) 

An Osama as speaker?

Allawi’s role, if any, remained unclear, and with it the prospect of a truly unified government.

And "CIA-Duh" will do everything in its power to prevent that.

A secular Shi’ite who served as interim prime minister in 2004 and 2005, Allawi won the vast majority of Sunni votes and cast himself as a nonsectarian leader of all Iraqis. 

Sunnis voted for a Shi'ite?

There is strong feeling among Sunnis that Maliki wrested victory from the rightful winner, with help from Iran and its proxies....

I am no longer wondering.

The new government is expected to include all the major factions, including the Kurds, Shiite political parties aligned with Iran and a Sunni-backed bloc that believes it should have been the one leading the next government.

In many ways it is likely to be similar to the previous government.   

So much for CHANGE, huh? You guys are mirroring the U.S. political system to a tee.

The presidency again will be held by the Kurds, the parliament speaker by the Sunnis and the prime minister's office went to the country's dominant sect, the Shiites. The breakdown is a reflection of the sectarian interests that still divide this country, seven years after the U.S.-led invasion.

Even though they never did before.

The announcement underscores what has been a stunning comeback for al-Maliki....  

To the U.S. anyway.

JERUSALEM — In a separate development yesterday, officials said Israel is ready to give the UN a plan to withdraw from the northern half of a divided village along the Lebanese border that it has occupied since 2006. The pullout could resolve a key dispute between the neighboring countries.

When they actually do get back to me.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will formally present the plan today during a meeting in New York with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Officials refused to release most details, including the timing and mechanics of the withdrawal, before the meeting.

Israel recaptured the northern half of the village of Ghajar during the 2006 war against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. A UN-brokered cease-fire that ended the fighting called on Israel to withdraw, but the Jewish state has so far refused to do so because of concerns that Hezbollah could move back into the village.  

And not only that: 

“Every day we have Israeli warplanes entering Lebanese airspace"

And NOT a PEEP from the U.N. Security Council!

Imagine the SHOE on the OTHER FOOT! 

The world would come to a stop and the media would be full of breaking news!

Hezbollah, one of Israel’s most bitter enemies, fired some 4,000 rockets into Israel during the 34-day war.

Nothing about Israel's littering of the place with cluster bombs after a cease fire was agreed upon, or their use of white phosphorous.

GHAJAR, Golan Heights—Israel agreed Wednesday to pull its troops from the northern half of a village that straddles the border with Lebanon, defusing a long-standing political dispute but frightening villagers who don't want their community divided.  

Yeah, they don't want Israeli occupation forces leaving. They must be the only people on earth that feel that way.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said senior government ministers had approved the withdrawal from northern Ghajar "in principle."  

Uh-oh.

Within the next few weeks, Israeli diplomats are to work out a detailed agreement with the U.N. peacekeeping force that patrols the border zone in southern Lebanon.  

They gonna "haggle" with them like they did with Obama?

The centerpiece of that deal would be a plan to keep Lebanese Hezbollah militants, who warred with Israel in 2006, out of the village.  

Yeah, Israel didn't attack or nuthin'.

Israel took control of northern Ghajar during that war.

Israeli officials said the village would not be divided after the withdrawal, but that did not allay residents' fears of being left stranded in Lebanon, if not by Israel then by the U.N. peacekeepers.

Unreal.  

Palestinians have been living in refugee camps for generations!

"People are scared it will separate children from their families and brothers from brothers and from our land," said Najib Khatib, a village spokesman. "How can they come today and divide a small village like this? We hope that this decision won't be carried out."  

That is one hope that will probably be fulfilled.

The village of Ghajar, flanked by rolling green plains, is virtually inaccessible to all but its residents. Only military roads lead to the village of concrete, boxy homes. Israeli soldiers man a checkpoint at the village entrance and search all vehicles....

Virtually all residents have taken Israeli citizenship, further complicating the village's future. Residents said they were upset that they had not been consulted by the government and learned of the decision through the media.

Get used to it.

Several hundred villagers protested Israel's decision, claiming they were Syrian and so should not be made to live in Lebanon.  

Then go back to Syria! 

And why wouldn't they want to live in Lebanon?

They held English-language signs that read, "Our village and our land and our farms are Syrian."

That STINKS OF controlled western propaganda. 

Wouldn't the signs be in Arabic (or Hebrew at least)? 

Some displayed old Syrian ID cards and documents from before 1967. 

Villagers are members of Islam's Alawite sect, whose followers include many members of Syria's ruling elite.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Israel had "no intention" of dividing the village and that residents would continue to have free movement throughout Ghajar and in and out of Israel, as they do now.  

With checkpoints and vehicle searches, of course.

Such assurances were of little comfort to 44-year-old Tawfik Khatib.

"I shouldn't have to need an ID card to pass through my own village to see my sister," he said....

Hezbollah fired some 4,000 rockets into Israel during the 34-day war in 2006. Israel believes the group has restocked its arsenal with more powerful weapons.

Again, no mention of the Israeli war crimes, it's violations of U.N. resolutions, or the amount of military hardware they have received from the U.S. in the interim. 

This one-sided s*** is really getting old; I guess that's why AmeriKan newspapers are tanking.

Hezbollah is the strongest armed force in Lebanon, and as a member of the government, wields heavy influence over official decision-making....  

And they were the only group to protect the Lebanese people from murderous Israel.

MEGADIM, Israel — The worst forest fire in Israel’s history devastated one of the country’s few forested areas yesterday, killing at least 36 guards on their way to rescue inmates at a prison in the fire zone, destroying homes, and forcing the evacuation of thousands.   

Look, I NEVER WISH FIRE UPON ANYONE; however, what POETIC JUSTICE considering ALL the OLIVE FIELDS and FARMS Israel's Zionist zettlers have torched and then seized!

The fire ripped through the Carmel forest in Israel’s Galilee, reaching the coastal city of Haifa by crossing a forest left tinder-dry by lack of rain and unseasonably hot weather.

Israel appealed for international assistance, a measure of the severity of the disaster, and Turkey put aside recent tensions to pledge aid.  

Turkey just showed how much better they are than Israel.

Investigators speculated that the fire could have been started accidentally, or it might have been a criminal act. They have all but ruled out some sort of attack by a Palestinian group.

“This is a disaster of unprecedented proportions,’’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. The fire was still burning out of control as midnight approached.

Netanyahu’s office said Greece, Spain, and Cyprus agreed to send firefighting helicopters, and additional aid was coming from Britain, Russia, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Romania, Jordan, and Bulgaria.

His office also said Turkey was offering assistance, a positive gesture after months of tensions. Israel-Turkish relations, once amicable, have been in a crisis since Israel’s bloody May 31 attack on a Turkish flotilla trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.  

Wow, the ISRAELI ACT of MURDEROUS PIRACY got a MENTION!

Two Palestinian men were found stowing away on a New Bedford-bound freighter, authorities said yesterday. Crewmembers found the two late last week and notified authorities. The ship was kept offshore, and state and local police as well as Coast Guard officials boarded it to take custody of the two men. Federal agents searched the ship before it was allowed to enter New Bedford, said Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Feinstein said the men were trying to get to Canada, and that authorities believe it may be a case of human smuggling. Authorities said the men posed no threat to national security.

JERUSALEM — A string of Israeli governments has helped cement the Jewish presence in Arab areas of Jerusalem by selling or leasing property to settler groups at bargain prices, court documents released yesterday show.

Yup, it's OFFICIAL POLICY!

The establishment of these Jewish enclaves appears meant to make partition of Jerusalem along ethnic lines — generally seen as a key aspect of any peace deal — exceedingly difficult....

Translation: there will not be peace and Israel will keep stealing land.

A key sticking point is a hilltop in the Old City, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque sits on the ruins of the biblical Jewish temples. Both sides claim the site.

The future of the rest of the Old City and its surroundings is just as contentious.

The Old City is divided into four quarters — Muslim, Jewish, Christian, and Armenian — but in past years, populations mixed. In 1948, during the war that followed Israel’s creation, Jordan captured the Old City and expelled its Jews.

Israel took back the Old City in the 1967 Mideast war, annexed it, and reestablished the Jewish Quarter, where today about 4,000 Jews live alongside about 30,000 Palestinians in the rest of the old areas. The annexation has not been internationally recognized.

But so what? Israel can flout international law with impunity.

Palestinians claim East Jerusalem, including the Old City, as the capital of the state they hope to establish. Palestinian negotiators have said they will not compromise over Jerusalem. Formulas have been put forward to divide the city ethnically, placing Jewish neighborhoods in Israel and Arab sections in the new Palestinian state.

But over the years, ultranationalist Israeli settler groups have been buying up buildings outside the Jewish Quarter.   

As opposed to Islamic militants, Zionist militants are "ultranationalist Israeli settler groups." 

Almost makes 'em sound good, doesn't it?

The documents released yesterday show how the Israeli government has been helping them with bargain land prices....

The documents on the Jerusalem property transfers were released to antisettlement activist Dror Etkes after a three-year court battle with the Israel Land Administration, which oversees almost all the country’s land.

Etkes wanted the government agency to detail its deals with two shadowy settler groups, Elad and Ateret Cohanim, which have helped move Jews into Arab sections of East Jerusalem.

Some of the properties passed on to the settler groups once belonged to Jews but fell into state hands. Arab families had since built on the land but were evicted from the properties when settler groups seized control....

Did they VIOLENTLY SEIZE CONTROL like Hamas?

The plan drew renewed attention to Israeli settlement policies just as Washington was pressing Israel to curb construction in a bid to get stalled peace talks back on track....  

And then we get Wikileaks that never mention them (or the attack on the aid flotilla)!

The announcement risked setting off another Israeli run-in with Vice President Joe Biden, who met with Netanyahu Sunday in New Orleans. Israel infuriated Biden earlier this year by announcing other construction plans in East Jerusalem while the vice president was visiting....

Netanyahu’s talks with Biden, and later this week with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, are aimed at finding a compromise to restart the talks.  

He comes to talk to these guys while Obama is in India?

Clinton has said that the settlements are a secondary issue that would be solved automatically if the two sides agree on borders. 

That is why Clinton was embarrassed by the Wikileaks.  You can't talk like that to Israel!

News of the new building plans came from Israel’s Interior Ministry, which is controlled by the ultra-Orthodox Jewish Shas Party. It was not known whether Netanyahu was told ahead of time....

Yeah, he doesn't even know what is going on in his own government. That's great.

Settlers say openly that their goal is to prevent creation of a Palestinian state....

The details that have been made public so far include 20 fighter jets as well as American promises to oppose any Palestinian attempt to obtain international recognition of statehood in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza without Israeli agreement.  

Would that the world had done that to Israel back in 1948.

The United States would veto a United Nations Security Council resolution along those lines and actively work against similar resolutions in forums where it does not have a veto....

Israeli officials said the planes, worth some $3 billion, were part of an American commitment to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge....

JERUSALEM —Israeli officials say the plan includes an unprecedented gift of 20 stealth warplanes to Israel....

It appeared increasingly unlikely, however, that both sides, wary of upsetting President Obama, would risk turning down the package....  

And then the AmeriKan media is left with egg on its face.

The highlights include giving Israel 20 F-35 stealth jets, worth about $3 billion — in addition to 20 of the next-generation warplanes Israel has already ordered for purchase. 

Purchased with YOUR TAX DOLLARS, American! 

And THAT is why Congress continues to fund the F-35 engine program the Pentagon wants cut!

It would mark the first time the United States gave warplanes to Israel without payment, defense officials and diplomats said.

And when they do pay it is with U.S. taxpayer dollars in the form of aid.

Also in the deal are American guarantees that the United States would veto anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations. With the Palestinians threatening to take their case to the UN if peace talks fail, this protection could be critical for Israel down the road.

While the United States routinely vetoes resolutions critical of Israel, American vetoes are not automatic, and some Israelis were uncertain Obama would back their nation at the Security Council....  

And that is why he will either be out after one-term, have his presidency ruined by the press, or will be assassinated.

In Paris, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak praised the emerging deal. He noted that the warplanes, expected to be capable of reaching Iran undetected by radar, would help Israel maintain its "qualitative edge."

JERUSALEM — Israel insisted yesterday it would keep building homes in disputed east Jerusalem, threatening to hold up a US-proposed settlement construction moratorium designed to renew deadlocked Mideast peacemaking.

The contours of the moratorium deal, as presented by Israeli officials after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from the United States last week, had appeared to be clearly agreed upon.

Washington, they said, had agreed to exclude the eastern sector of the holy city from the 90-day moratorium and there would be no further demands for construction curbs in the West Bank when the latest moratorium expired.

All that MONEY for a 90-day NOTHING?!!!

Yesterday, however, a day after Netanyahu said a deal was imminent, the United States still had not sent a promised letter detailing the understandings on the proposed moratorium.

In Washington, a senior Obama administration official said the United States and Israel were still “haggling’’ over details of the written assurances....

Ever notice Israel always haggles with every one and nothing ever gets done?

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter, said it was not clear when the letter might be completed.  

Never?

In a speech yesterday, Netanyahu suggested agreement was neither imminent nor inevitable....  

But I bet they still get the planes and protection.

To entice the Israelis to sign on to the deal, the United States has proposed a package of incentives including a gift of 20 next-generation stealth fighter planes and US pledges to veto anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations, Israeli officials have said.

But Netanyahu is having trouble winning support for the plan even from his coalition allies.

The ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, which can make or break the deal, says it will let it go through only if Israel receives written assurances from the United States that the building restrictions exclude Jerusalem.

While service is compulsory for most young men and women, a growing minority is avoiding conscription, leaving planners to worry that the military will not have the troops it says it needs.

The characteristics of those who do serve are changing in striking ways. Officers who are ideologically opposed to relinquishing Israeli control of the West Bank are taking on a more prominent role, potentially complicating any eventual Israeli withdrawal of Jewish settlers from the territory as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians.

This is why I never take peace talk seriously.  

And notice Zionist extremists and militants are described very benignly as "settlers" -- implying that NO ONE was LIVING THERE before!

Recent scandals have reignited debate about morals and accountability in the armed forces, and analysts say public trust in the military is declining. Last month, a YouTube video of a dancing Israeli soldier near a bound and blindfolded Palestinian woman went viral on the Internet, further embarrassing the military....

Today, the military loses 13 percent of its potential draftees because of ultra-Orthodox exemptions, compared with 4 percent 10 years ago. In 2020, that number is expected to reach 20 percent because of a significantly higher birthrate among the ultra-Orthodox compared with secular Israelis.

To help persuade more ultra-Orthodox to volunteer, the Israeli military is expanding its efforts to provide special food, extra time for prayer, and other adjustments to make service compatible with their religious practices.

The Israeli military says its monitoring of Facebook has helped catch 1,000 women lying about their religious background to avoid serving.   

I'll never open an account with that spy service.

The army hired investigators two years ago to help stem the increase of draft dodgers and has used Facebook to find evidence of those women lying to avoid conscription. 

Then the Israelis must REALLY BE DESPERATE!!

A military official said recently that one woman who said she was a religious Jew posted a photo of herself on Facebook holding a menu from a non-kosher restaurant. Another updated her profile on the Sabbath.

All were brought back to duty.

In the past, officers largely came from secular, elite families from the Tel Aviv area or the collective farms known as kibbutzim.

The men, Islam and Mohammed Yasin, are related and belonged to the Army of Islam, said a Gaza official who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. The shadowy extremist Muslim group draws inspiration from Al Qaeda, though it is not believed to have operational links.

The airstrike left the car in flames and also wounded three people, said Hamas medical official Adham Abu Salmia.

Israel has killed dozens of wanted Palestinian militants — and a number of bystanders — in airstrikes over the years. But Israel has greatly scaled back its operations since early 2009.

BBC reporter Alan Johnston was released about four months after his abduction in Gaza.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Hamas would respect any peace deal reached between Israel and Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, provided it is approved in a global Palestinian referendum, the top Hamas official in Gaza said yesterday.  

It is called representative government and democracy, but I wouldn't expect Americans to know anything about that.

In a rare news conference for foreign media, Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of Gaza’s Hamas government, staked out seemingly pragmatic positions. He said Hamas seeks dialogue with the West and wants to be “part of the solution, not the problem.’’  

Israel can't hear you, and thus nor can the U.S.

He also denied Israeli allegations that Al Qaeda operates in Gaza and that Gaza militants planned to carry out attacks in neighboring Egypt.

Last month, Israel killed three operatives of an Al Qaeda-inspired group, the Army of Islam, in air strikes in Gaza, saying the men planned to carry out attacks in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

A senior military official said this week that it is not clear whether the militants had planned to kidnap Israeli tourists in the Sinai or use Egypt as a gateway to sneak into Israel to carry out attacks there.  

So WHEN is the NEXT ISRAELI FALSE FLAG?  Must be soon.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said several armed Gaza militants were still hiding in the Sinai.

He also alleged that Al Qaeda operatives from Yemen have been training militants in Gaza, and that Hamas has obtained thousands of rockets, via smuggling tunnels under the Egyptian border, that can strike deep into Israel.  

Yeah, the BULLS*** is getting AWFULLY THICK!

The official did not provide evidence for his allegations.  

And even if he did I would suspect forgery.

Haniyeh said such assertions are part of a disinformation campaign meant to prepare for future attacks on Gaza.

Yeah, we have all seen this movie before.

He said he sent a letter to Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, assuring him that Palestinian militants have no plans to attack targets in Arab or Islamic countries....

As much as has been found, it is estimated that only 1/3 of Egypt's archeological wonders have been uncovered to date. A newly discovered temple was uncovered while digging a sewer line, and a cache of finely preserved mummies was literally stumbled over by a cow in a pasture. 

Iraq's ancient heritage was enshrined in its ancient sites and museum. As a result of the war, many of those sites have been damaged or destroyed. Part of the ancient city or Ur now lies underneath a US air base runway. The treasures of the museum have only partly been recovered. The treasures from the looted archaeological sites have been scattered to the world. 

Likewise, Iran has a rich archaeological heritage marking its place in history.

All of this wealth of archaeological treasures must of course annoy Israel. We are raised from birth with Old Testament tales of the greatness of the ancient Israelites, of the powerful kingdoms of Solomon and David and the first temple. Yet Israel, while rich in antiquities, is almost totally devoid of artifacts from this supposedly glorious time in her history. The existence of the fabled First Temple was supported with just two artifacts, a carved staff ornament in the shape of a pomegranate and the Jehoash tablet. Both of these artifacts have been exposed as frauds. We are told that once there was a magnificent temple on that hill, but it "all went away." The wonders emerging from the soil of Egypt, Iraq, and Iran serve as a constant reminder that ancient buildings of such a scale as we are told the First Temple was simply do not vanish without a trace. 

There is considerable reason to suspect that the tales told in the Old Testament are just that; tales. The Bible is not science, it is the collected stories of a primitive tribal people reminding each other how important they are. And like fishermen talking about the one that got away, or Ramses with his temple carvings of the did-not-really-happen victory over the Hittites at Kadesh, the writers of the ancient testaments assumed that the people they were telling stories to had no way to verify the claims for themselves. So "embellishment" was a low-risk activity. 

We do know from the available archaeological evidence that the Exodus probably actually happened to the Hyksos, not the Israelites. We know that the story of Moses is suspect because no Egyptian princess would hide a Hebrew child inside Pharaoh's household, then give the kid a Hebrew name ("Moses" is actually an Egyptian title meaning "Prince" and is included in the names of many Pharaoh's names such as Tut-Moses, Ah-Moses, Ra-Moses (Ramses) etc.)

Likewise, the story of Masada may be less than accurate. The remains found on the mountain were buried with pig bones, something no proper Jewish funeral would tolerate, which suggests that the bodies found and venerated as heroes of ancient Judea were actually those of dead Roman Soldiers.

But a good story is a good story and the writers of the ancient texts were probably not thinking much further into the future than the guys who pen the "Celebrity dates space alien" stories you see at supermarket checkout lines. The fact that the celebrity is a real person does not prove the space alien exists. It's just a story. 

Given enough time, even a simple story written in jest can take on a life of its own. Scientology began as a bet between two science fiction writers; look how wide spread that has become in just a short time.

But, over time, entire religions with attendant wealth and power structures have been built on the premise that these old testament stories really happened exactly as written. And today, here in the 21st century world, science has started to catch up with these ancient legends and call many of them into doubt. 

So, for a nation that justifies its existence on the writings of the Torah, the plethora of sites and artifacts confirming the ancient histories of Egypt, Iraq, Iran, etc. etc. etc. must seem a dire political threat for a nation whose own ancient history seems to have left little if any traces at all." -- Wake the Flock Up

Decades of archeology have shown that the Western Wall, the holiest place where Jews can pray, was a retaining wall of the compound where the two biblical Jewish Temples stood 20 centuries ago.

The latest assertion about the Temples, site, echoing positions taken in the past by Palestinian leaders, including the late Yasser Arafat, underlined the deeply held, conflicting beliefs that must be untangled if a peace accord is to be reached between Israel and the Palestinians.

Al-Mutawakil Taha, deputy minister of information in the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, which rules the West Bank, said yesterday that his study, published on a Palestinian government website, reflected the official Palestinian position. Part of the report disputes that the Western Wall was a retaining wall of the Temple compound.

“This wall has never been a part of what is called the Jewish Temple,’’ the report says. “However, it was Islamic tolerance which allowed the Jews to stand before it and cry over its loss.’’

If the show were on the other foot.... denied.

The report concludes that since Jews have no claim to the area, it is holy Muslim territory and must be part of Palestinian Jerusalem.... 

I think it should all be Palestine again.  It's the only solution.

BANI HASSAN, West Bank — Prime Minister Salam Fayya, the former World Bank economist, visited a rural West Bank road destroyed by Israel, saying he wanted to demonstrate his belief that independence is inevitable as long as Palestinians do not lose faith.  

He's right about that.

The road was torn up by Israeli troops last week, on grounds that it was paved in a nature reserve in an area under full Israeli rule....  

That's the on-the-ground reality for most Palestinians.

Despite Fayyad’s optimism, signs abound that independence is still a long way off: His motorcade was led by an Israeli police cruiser along Israeli settlements and unauthorized hilltop outposts....

Fayyad’s Palestinian Authority operates with limited autonomy in 40 percent of the West Bank, where most of the territory’s 2.3 million Palestinians live. The rest of the West Bank, home to more than 120 Israeli settlements, remains under full Israeli control....

Fayyad said his next big project is a $400 million international airport near the West Bank town of Jericho. He acknowledged that he does not have funding yet...  

As if Israel is going to allow a Palestinian airport.

While Israel has significantly eased restrictions on Palestinian trade and movement, spurring modest economic growth in the past two years, it rarely grants construction permits in the areas under its control.

Unless they are for Zionist militants that the Zionist-controlled paper calls "settlers."

Major development projects, including industrial parks and the Palestinians’ first planned city, have been held up because Israel would not give the go-ahead for sections the Palestinians control....

A gaping hole in many statehood plans is what to do with Gaza, which is to be the third component of a Palestinian state, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, but has been controlled by the Islamic militant Hamas since a violent takeover in 2007....
