Globe Circulation Down Again

"Profit declines at Times Co.

The New York Times Co. said its profit fell 26 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010 from a year ago, and warned that advertising was still volatile....

Quarterly revenues of $661.7 million were hurt by a 3.1 percent decline in advertising and a 3.6 percent drop in circulation revenues from a year ago. Digital advertising climbed 11 percent, but could not entirely overcome a 7 percent decline in print advertising. For the full year, total revenues were down nearly 2 percent, to $2.4 billion.

“In 2010 we demonstrated further progress toward our long-term strategy of re-engineering our company,’’ said Janet L. Robinson, the Times Co.’s chief executive.   

The self-delusion is really something to behold.

How many more millions did she make in pay? 

Advertising revenues in the Times Co.’s New England Media Group, which includes The Boston Globe, fell 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier, to $61 million. For the full year, ad revenues fell 7.4 percent, to $213.7 million.

Circulation revenues in New England were roughly flat for the year, at $167.4 million. Total revenue for the New England group was $113.2 million in the quarter, down 3.3 percent. Revenue for the year was $423.9 million, down 3.8 percent.  

After I hung with them nearly every day.

Then they are getting what they deserve.

Robinson said advertising remained volatile during the fourth quarter. After a promising October and November, she said, advertisers showed caution over the economic recovery in December.
