"Record numbers of homeless people in Portland, ME
(NECN: Amy Sinclair, Portland, ME) - More families than ever are struggling to get by. Shelter workers in Maine’s largest city are scrambling to accommodate record numbers of homeless people this summer....
One of the things shelter staff are noticing this summer is the increase in first time users, people who have never been homeless before. That of course is related to the bad economy, both in Maine and across the region.
This after they TOLD US we have been in RECOVERY for TWO YEARS!!
And NOW we are being told we are going into the double-dip that wasn't supposed to happen.
"We're seeing folks who have a very recent work history who are able bodied, participating in work fair program and just not able to find employment," said Doug.
Economic refugees, people moving here from out of state looking for job opportunities that are hard to come by, are also contributing to the high numbers
"Everybody is looking for work so all the jobs are taken. I went to McDonald and Dunkin Donuts. I even signed up for the late shifts, trying to get those." said Green.
Portland’s Health and Human Services director says providing enough emergency beds is only the first step.
''The ultimate goal is permanent housing" said Doug.
But you know what? The banks and war profiteers are doing just fine so all is well with the world.

"Tritium from Vt nuke plant in Connecticut River" by Associated Press, August 17, 2011
MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont health officials say radioactive tritium from the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant has reached the Connecticut River.
And here I am 15 miles downstream.
Dr. Harry Chen, the state health commissioner, said late Wednesday that samples of water taken July 18 and July 25 from the river — at the point where contaminated groundwater flows from the shoreline into the river — confirmed the migration of the substance.
Chen says health officials have been tracking the plume of tritium-contaminated groundwater as it moved towards the river and that the readings confirm it has reached the river....
