They were two soldiers testing their skills in a game known as quick draw, often played during downtime on their base in Al-Kut, Iraq.
In June, US Army Sergeant Matthew Gallagher, a 22-year-old from Falmouth on a second tour of duty, pointed his 9mm pistol at his roommate, Army Sergeant Brent McBride, and asked, “What would you do now?’’
McBride said he drew his own pistol, pointed it at Gallagher’s head, and pulled the trigger. Only this time, there was a bullet in the chamber. He killed his comrade - an accident, he would later tell military investigators.
Such stories of senselessly risky behavior, sometimes resulting in death, are not uncommon, and have unfolded in military court trials with relative frequency, military analysts and behavior specialists say....
