"Vt. man charged with stealing UMass laptops
University of Massachusetts police arrested a Vermont man they say has been pilfering laptops from students at the Amherst campus’s main library. Christopher Desjardin, 30, of Colchester, Vt., was arrested this week after a stakeout at the W.E.B DuBois Library. He was a suspect because he looked older than the students and was spotted in the building during previous thefts, police said. Deputy Police Chief Patrick Archbald told The Daily Hampshire Gazette that officers saw Desjardin appear to take an item and followed him to his vehicle. He was charged with larceny over $250, although police think he might be responsible for a dozen of thefts of unattended laptops."
"Vt. panel advances bill to decriminalize some marijuana possession
A Vermont Senate committee has approved a bill that would remove criminal penalties for possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. The bill, which was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, will now go before the full Senate. The House passed the legislation last month. Instead of a criminal penalty, those caught with up to an ounce of pot would face a civil fine like a traffic ticket of up to $300. It also seeks to reduce the chances that anyone caught with up to 2 ounces would have a permanent criminal record and defines a new crime of driving while smoking marijuana."
