LONDON — British police said Thursday they have launched a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and want to trace 38 ‘‘persons of interest’’ in the case.

Detectives say it’s possible that the girl, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.

Scotland Yard said 12 of the individuals of interest are British, and the rest from a variety of European countries.

The force says it is working with governments across the continent to find out more.

Madeleine vanished from a vacation home in Portugal’s Algarve region on May 3, 2007, days before her fourth birthday.

The case has generated intense interest.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said police ‘‘continue to believe that there is a possibility that Madeleine is alive.’’

LONDON — Both of the suspects accused of butchering a British soldier during broad daylight on a London street had long been on the radar of Britain’s domestic spy agency, though investigators say it would have been nearly impossible to predict that the men were on the verge of a brutal killing.

Still, counterterrorism officials said they are reviewing what — if any — lessons can be gleaned from the information they had leading up to the slaying Wednesday.

The review comes amid an outpouring of grief over Wednesday’s slaughter of Lee Rigby, 25, of the Second Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Rigby, who had a 2-year-old son, had served in Afghanistan....

Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday that the Intelligence and Security Committee would review the work of agencies such as Britain’s domestic spy agency, MI5, in the wake of the attack ‘‘as is the normal practice in these sorts of cases.’’

In Britain, security officials operate under the ‘‘principle of proportionality,’’ which means there needs to a compelling reason before any type of surveillance is undertaken.

Yeah, never mind the cameras on the street corners.

Surveillance can range from watching a person’s movements to intercepting phone calls and electronic communication. The greater the level of intrusion into a person’s privacy, the higher the level of government approval needed.

Although British police have not named either suspect — both are recovering from their injuries after being shot by police after the killing — they had been known to law enforcement officers for as long as six years, the counterterrorism official said.

One of the suspects had been photographed at multiple raucous demonstrations by the banned extremist group Al-Muhajiroun.

Britain was bracing for potential clashes with right-wing activists, who have promised demonstrations, as well as possible copycat terror attacks after Wednesday’s killing.

Some 1,200 extra police have been put on alert in London.

Wednesday’s attack was captured on video by passersby and made for gruesome viewing.

LONDON — Britain scrambled fighter jets Friday to intercept a commercial airliner carrying more than 300 people from Pakistan, diverting it to an isolated runway at an airport on the outskirts of London and arresting two British passengers who allegedly threatened to destroy the plane.

A British security official said the situation involving the Pakistan International Airlines flight did not appear terror-related, though police were still investigating, but the incident rattled the United Kingdom days after a soldier was killed in London in a suspected terror attack.

A Pakistani official briefed by British police and airline security on the inquiry said two suspects, speaking Urdu, allegedly threatened to ‘‘destroy the plane’’ after a quarrel with the crew. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the case.

Flight P709 was traveling from Lahore, Pakistan, to Manchester Airport when it was diverted by the fighter jets to Stansted Airport. The UK Ministry of Defense confirmed that Typhoon jets were sent to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft but gave no further details.

Passenger Nauman Rizvi told Pakistan’s GEO TV two men who had tried to move toward the cockpit were handcuffed and arrested once the plane landed. Rizvi said that after the men were taken away, the flight crew told passengers there had been a terrorist threat and that the pilot had raised an alarm.

And yet the government says it wasn't terror related?

Police said they were notified at 1:20 p.m. local time that a threat had been made to an aircraft. After the Boeing 777 landed, armed officers entered and arrested two British nationals, aged 30 and 41, on suspicion of endangering the aircraft, the force said.

LONDON — Counterterrorism police on Saturday questioned a friend of alleged Islamic extremist Michael Adebolajo, one of two suspects in a savage killing of a British soldier on a London street that has horrified the country.

The amount of print and press this attack is receiving is also indicative of its propagandistic nature.

The friend, Abu Nusaybah, was arrested immediately after he gave a BBC Television interview Friday describing how Adebolajo may have become radicalized in Kenya and alleging that Britain’s security services tried to recruit him six months ago. Police said Nusaybah was wanted on suspicion of involvement in unspecified acts of terrorism.

OH, NO!!

Meanwhile, a French soldier was stabbed in the throat in a busy commercial district outside Paris on Saturday, and France’s president said authorities are investigating any possible links with the recent slaying of a British soldier.

Who is thinking of these scripts within the bowels of intelligence agencies, because this is stupid!

President Francois Hollande said the identity of the attacker was unknown and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the assault on the uniformed soldier in the La Defense shopping area. The life of the 23-year-old soldier was not in danger, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Last year, three French paratroopers were killed by a man police described as a French-born Islamic extremist who then went on to strike a Jewish school in the south of France, killing four more people.

On Saturday, British police arrested three more suspects in connection with the attack there. Two men, aged 24 and 28, were picked up at a residential address in southeast London. A third man, 21, was arrested on a London street at the same time.

Police said they used a stun gun on two of the suspects. All three were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder....

The horrific scene was recorded on witnesses’ cellphones, and a video has emerged showing one of the two suspects making political statements and warning of more violence as the soldier lay on the ground.

Police shot both men as they arrived minutes after 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby’s slaying. Both suspects remain under armed guard at two London hospitals.

The attack has sparked fears of anti-Muslim sentiments in Britain. Police on Saturday arrested three people on suspicion of posting racist comments on Twitter ahead of a march organized by the far-right group English Defense League in the northern city of Newcastle. Police said some 1,500 people took part in the march. About 350 people staged a counterprotest....

Twitter has been exposed as an agenda-pushing provocation after calling for a race war over Zimmerman.

Nusaybah’s interview offered one possible narrative. He said Adebolajo’s behavior changed after he allegedly suffered abuse at the hands of Kenyan security forces.

Nusaybah said in the BBC interview that Adebolajo became withdrawn after he was allegedly arrested and then abused both physically and sexually while in jail. 

In other words, TORTURED!

He said that agents from Britain’s domestic spy agency, MI5, approached Adebolajo after he returned to Britain and initially asked him if he had met specific Muslim militants, then asked Adebolajo if he was willing to act as an informer.

‘‘He was explicit in that he refused to work for them,’’ Nusaybah said. The BBC said police arrested Nusaybah outside its studios Friday night immediately after the interview.

London police confirmed that a 31-year-old man was arrested Friday night on suspicion of ‘‘the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.’’ Police declined to identify Nusaybah by name.

LONDON — British police arrested a 10th suspect Monday in the vicious street killing of a soldier in London, an apparent Islamic extremist attack that has horrified the country and heightened racial tensions.

The 50-year-old man was detained in Welling, east of London, on suspicion of conspiring to murder 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, Scotland Yard said. Police gave no further information on the suspect’s identity.

The latest arrest came as more details trickled out about Michael Adebolajo, 28, one of the two main suspects in Wednesday’s slaying. He and Michael Adebowale, 22, were shot and wounded by police....

British officials say the two primary suspects had been known to them for some time, but revelations that Adebolajo had been arrested in Kenya in 2010 — and claims that British security forces had tried to recruit him as an informer after that — have fueled questions about whether UK authorities could have done more to prevent last week’s killing. 

If there ever was a killing. The video looks ridiculous and faked.

LONDON — One of two suspects shot by police following the slaying of a British soldier in London last week has been released from the hospital and taken to a police station for questioning, police said Tuesday.

The release came as new details emerged about links between the other main suspect and a radical Islamic cleric in Kenya who had been sanctioned by the United States for being part of a terrorist network.

The case centers on the brazen killing of off-duty soldier Lee Rigby, 25, who was slain by two men wielding knives and meat cleavers near his barracks in southeast London’s Woolwich area. The two suspects were shot by police and arrested on suspicion of murder.

Michael Adebowale, 22, was judged well enough to be released from the hospital and taken into police custody....

The other suspect, Michael Adebolajo, 28, remains in a hospital in stable condition under armed guard. He was seen on a video boasting about the killing minutes after the attack. His family on Tuesday released a statement of condolence to Rigby’s family, expressing horror and distress over the killing.

‘‘Nothing we say can undo the events of last week,’’ the statement read. ‘‘However, as a family, we wish to share with others our horror at the senseless killing of Lee Rigby and express our profound shame and distress that this has brought on our family.’’

Police have arrested a total of 10 suspects in connection with last Wednesday’s killing.

In Kenya, police said they believed Adebolajo, a British citizen, had earlier associated with a radical Kenyan Muslim cleric who tried to help him join an Al Qaeda-linked rebel group in neighboring Somalia.

Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed, who has since been killed, helped Adebolajo in his attempt to travel to Somalia to wage jihad, or holy war, against the country’s United Nations-backed government, a senior Kenyan police official said Tuesday. The official insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press on this matter. 

Adebolajo was arrested with five other young men in November 2010 in Kenya near the Somalia border and eventually returned to Britain.

Mohammed had been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department for allegedly facilitating travel to Somalia for many young Kenyans wanting to join Somalia’s al-Shabab rebels, who have launched terrorist attacks in and outside Somalia. The Treasury Department also charged that Mohammed was fund-raising for al-Shabab.

In London, a worker for a rights group that lobbies on behalf of suspected terrorists said Adebolajo approached the group several months ago and appeared stressed and under pressure.

Arnaud Mafille, a case worker with advocacy group CagePrisoners, said Tuesday he believed Adebolajo was troubled by alleged abuse during detention in Kenya and ‘‘extreme harassment’’ by British security officials.

The extensive revelations about Adebolajo’s alleged attempts to link up with international terrorists have raised questions about whether Britain’s intelligence services could have done more to prevent last week’s killing. Britain’s parliamentary intelligence committee said Tuesday it will investigate whether UK intelligence services fell short before the killing of Rigby.

LONDON — A prime suspect in the vicious slaying of a British soldier sat handcuffed in court on Thursday, given permission not to stand up before a judge because of wounds sustained when he was shot by police.

Michael Adebowale, 22, confirmed his name, address, and date of birth as the investigation into the killing entered its courtroom phase.

He is one of two men suspected of attacking Lee Rigby near a military barracks in southeast London. The other suspect, Michael Adebolajo, 28, remains hospitalized and has not been charged. He is likely to be charged once he has recovered enough to be released from the hospital.

The attack on Rigby by two men wielding knives and meat cleavers has aggravated tensions in Britain, especially since Adebolajo — carrying bloody weapons — invited onlookers to film him after the killing as he ranted about the British government’s presence in Muslim lands.

There has been a surge in anti-Muslim protests and attacks on mosques since the killing, and far-right groups have mobilized.

On Thursday, London police barred a planned march by the far-right British National Party from the scene of the attack to a nearby Islamic center because of the threat of ‘‘serious disorder.’’ Police said the demonstration would be held in central London on Saturday.

The Al Qaeda-linked magazine Inspire, meanwhile, expressed support for the soldier’s slaying. In a recently released issue, the magazine said that it and other ‘‘lone-wolf’’ attacks were a response to Western ‘‘governments’ invasion of Muslim lands, occupations, aggression, and oppression.’’

Security was extremely tight for Adebowale’s first court appearance. He is scheduled to be back in court Monday for another hearing and remains in custody.

Adebowale was charged late Wednesday night, two days after he was released from hospital. He was also charged with threatening people with a revolver, police said.

Autopsy results made public Wednesday indicated that Rigby, 25, was first struck by a car and then attacked. He died of multiple stab wounds, the report said.

Both suspects were shot by police who arrived on the scene minutes after the attack. Video shows two suspects rushing a police car as it arrives on the scene, then being shot by police and given first aid on the ground.

British authorities are facing questions about their failure to stop Rigby’s killing, since the two suspects were on authorities’ radar from previous counterterrorism investigations.

PARIS — DNA traces on an orange juice bottle and a surveillance video of a man praying in a mall led to the arrest Wednesday of a young suspected Islamist extremist accused of stabbing a French soldier patrolling a crowded area just outside Paris, officials said.

The attack came days after a British soldier was slain on a London street in broad daylight, raising fears of potential copycat attacks.

The case also brought into question what authorities knew about the suspect, identified by police as Alexandre Dhaussy, because he had been tracked over several years.

The French soldier attacked on Saturday is recovering from his injuries and has been released from the hospital.

The suspect was captured on camera offering a Muslim prayer in a corner of a busy shopping mall 10 minutes before he went after the soldier Saturday at the La Defense financial and shopping district, French prosecutor Francois Molins said Wednesday at a news conference in Paris.

The 22-year-old Frenchman bought the juice and the pocketknife used in the attack an hour beforehand, Molins said.

Whaaaat?

‘‘The intent to kill is obvious. The suspect doesn’t hesitate to stab several times with impressive determination,’’ Molins said.

Death by a thousand stabs!

The suspect was arrested Wednesday morning outside Paris at the house of a friend who has not been implicated.

‘‘The suspect implicitly confessed when he told police ‘I know why you’re here,’ ’’ Molins told reporters. ‘‘The nature of the attack, the fact that it happened three days after the London attack, and a prayer that was [said] shortly before the attack, make us believe that he acted in the name of his religious ideology and that his wish was to attack someone representing the state.”

Dhaussy, who was unemployed and homeless, was identified through DNA on a plastic juice bottle, said Christophe Crepin, spokesman for the police union UNSA.

The prosecutor said the suspect had converted to Islam around age 18. Authorities had his DNA profile on record after a series of petty crimes as a minor.

Intelligence officials operating in Yvelines, west of Paris, had tracked Dhaussy over several years. However, information gleaned on him, like his refusal in 2011 to take a job placing him in contact with women, never got bumped up to a national level, a statement by the French National Police headquarters said.

Another oversight, 'eh?

The statement said the acts, including his praying in the street in 2009, were ‘‘characteristic of fundamentalist behavior’’ that did not justify sending the information to the DCRI, as the national intelligence agency is known.

While looking for a job with a publicly financed agency, Dhaussy did say he wanted to follow religious training abroad, the statement said.
