Police are searching for those responsible for vandalizing the home of a Lunenburg High School student and football player with racial graffiti, Lunenburg Police Chief James Marino said.
Upon learning of the vandalism, School Superintendent Loxi Jo Calmes said school administrators and football coaches indefinitely postponed Friday’s varsity game against Oakmont Regional.
“We had to postpone tonight’s football game as a result of an offense directed against a member of the football program,” Calmes wrote in a statement Friday.
“We have declined to release more details to enable the school administration to conduct an appropriate investigation.”
In an e-mail Saturday, Calmes said that School Committee chairman Gregory Berthiaume had invited residents to participate in a vigil at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lunenburg Gazebo to show support for tolerance and diversity.
Marino said the Police Department has notified the FBI and the Worcester district attorney’s office.
“As a community we offer our deepest support to the player and his family and want to emphasize that Lunenburg is an inclusive supportive community, and this is not the sort of behavior we foster or tolerate,” Marino said in a statement Saturday.
“The nature of this crime has deeply impacted the team, the school, and the entire community,” he said.
While Calmes said in her e-mail that she could not comment on many aspects of the investigation, she said this was the first incident of its kind that she had seen in her 16 years as an administrator in the district.
She added that it’s premature to say whether there is a culture of bullying anywhere in the school, but if students are found responsible for racially motivated bullying or vandalism, they “could face a range of sanctions including discipline from suspension up to expulsion from school, depending on the circumstances.”
