A Peabody man accused of stealing a pickup truck and leading police on a chase from New Hampshire to Boston, pleaded not guilty in Woburn District Court on Monday afternoon, Middlesex prosecutors said.
Michael Daniels, 33, was charged with unarmed robbery, operating under the influence of drugs as a fourth offense, carrying a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, and operating a motor vehicle without a license, said Jeffrey Shapiro, a spokesman for the Middlesex district attorney’s office.
The chase began about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Salem, N.H., after police pursued a stolen GMC pickup on Interstate 93 southbound.
At the border, Massachusetts State Police picked up the pursuit.
Daniels allegedly continued down I-93, entering the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel, where State Police lost sight of him. Boston police stepped in after he crashed the truck on Lewis Street in the North End, State Police said.
Daniels ran toward North Station, where he was arrested at about 6 p.m, State Police said.
A 27-year-old Peabody man was in the truck with Daniels and told troopers that he had been kidnapped.
That statement is under investigation, State Police said.
Daniels had a pellet gun with him when he was arrested, State Police said.
At his arraignment, Daniels was held on $25,000 cash bail. If he posts bail, he is to have no contact with victim and witnesses.
He was also ordered not to carry dangerous weapons or drive, Shapiro said.
Daniels is to return to court July 14 for a probable cause hearing, Shapiro said.
