North Carolina Mother Was Negligent

"Police: Mom helped son partake in ‘fire challenge’" Associated Press   August 13, 2014

A Charlotte, N.C., woman is facing charges after police said she helped her son set himself on fire in a videotaped stunt known as the ‘‘fire challenge’’ that is gaining popularity on social media and has left at least two other children with severe burns.

The video taken in late July was posted on Facebook and made its way around the Internet.

Time to throw some ice water on this.

"At about 2 a.m. Saturday, Griffin dove into the water from the “Juice Guys” building on Straight Wharf, according to a statement from Nantucket police. He floated to the surface, then he sank. He did not come up again.... Many people could not help but dwell on what happened early Saturday morning, when Griffin drowned after diving into the water from the “Juice Guys” building on Straight Wharf around 2 a.m., according to police."

I think he was drinking more than water, don't you?

No wonder he's getting so much attention.

I'm sure it's a great cause, but I'm just not into anything the Globe is promoting these days.

The 16-year-old is seen in the shower with shorts on, dousing himself in what appears to be nail polish remover. He lights his chest on fire, but panics and runs from the bathroom. Others had to help him put out the blaze.

The teen suffered minor burns to his chest and neck, according to a news release from police. Someone who knew the mother and teen called social workers, who called police. Janie Talley, 41, was held last week on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

“Fire challenge” participants are supposed to pour flammable liquids on themselves and set themselves ablaze, hopefully extinguishing the flames before they burn the skin.

Buddhist monks did that with a purpose; stop-pid American kids are trying for the 15-minutes of hits. That's how low the bar is in AmeriKa.

But it can easily go wrong. People panic when the flames quickly spread and are not immediately extinguished, then forget to douse themselves with water.

"Marine accused of desertion returned to US unit" Associated Press   July 01, 2014

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Marine corporal who was declared a deserter nearly 10 years ago after disappearing in Iraq under mysterious circumstances was held Monday at a North Carolina brig after being apprehended in the Middle East, a spokesman said.

That's different treatment than Bergdahl.

Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun, 34, was returned to Camp Lejeune, said Lieutenant Colonel Cliff W. Gilmore of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force, the unit where Hassoun was assigned.

Hassoun was in a Middle Eastern country that Gilmore said he couldn’t identify when he contacted US authorities to give himself up. Hassoun was born in Lebanon and is a naturalized American citizen.

Hassoun disappeared from his unit in Iraq in 2004.

He soon turned up unharmed in Lebanon and said he had been kidnapped by Islamic extremists. He disappeared again before facing the military equivalent of a grand jury hearing.

Major General Raymond Fox, commander of the Second Marine Expeditionary Force at Lejeune, will decide how to adjudicate the case, which could mean a court-martial.
