Sunday Globe Special: Buruca Left Blood on the Porch

"Man arrested after fatal stabbing in Malden; Is charged with killing man and injuring another" by Nicholas Jacques and Jeremy C. Fox | Globe Correspondents   August 09, 2014

MALDEN — A Boston man was arrested Saturday for allegedly stabbing a family member and another man in Malden, killing one of them, authorities said.

Police arrested Juan Buruca, 39, after responding to a report of a double stabbing at a home on Newhall Street about 1:15 a.m., the Middlesex district attorney’s office said in a prepared statement.

The two victims, both Malden residents, were taken to local hospitals, the statement said.

Jorge Alberto Machado Mejia, 48, was pronounced dead at Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said.

The other victim, a 45-year-old whom authorities did not name, is expected to survive, Ryan’s office said. Authorities did not say which victim was related to Buruca.

Prosecutors said Buruca had an argument with some relatives, including one of the victims, sometime before the assault.

State and local police are investigating the attack, and the office of the chief medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Police recovered the suspected murder weapon during the investigation, Ryan’s office said.

The investigation was ongoing Saturday afternoon at the Newhall Street home, where a private crime scene cleanup crew wearing full-body biohazard suits and respirators tore up slats from the front porch and placed them in plastic biohazard bags. Red tape sealed off the area around the front yard.

Chris Webb, Malden’s director of public health, said a thorough cleanup was necessary because “the person bled to death on that deck. There was a considerable amount of blood up there.”

Webb said city officials had been unable to reach the owner of the building, who Webb said lives in Somerville, and decided to act with extreme caution.

“We’ve never had a murder like this — on the front steps — and the people can’t get in and out safely,” Webb said.

Authorities charged Buruca with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, the statement said.

He was to be arraigned Monday in Malden District Court.
