KABUL, Afghanistan — The revelations in the documents — most of which predate the past six months — don’t appear to pose much risk to US military officers. But the documents do include the names of dozens of Afghan villagers who approached US forces to provide information on the Taliban.

The Pentagon inquiry into the source of the leaks is looking most closely at Private Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence specialist already charged with leaking other material to the website.

A criminal investigation could go beyond the military, and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates did not rule out WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as a potential target.

Assange seemed pretty confident that would not happen yesterday.

Senior military officials said they don’t have the time or staff to dedicate to sorting through the WikiLeaks reports. It’s not clear what US commanders can do about the breach.
