CARACAS - President Hugo Chavez sang and recited a poem yesterday at his first public event in Venezuela since returning from a week of cancer treatment in Cuba.

Chavez said he is optimistic that he will recover from cancer. He also said risks remain and that he is under strict orders from his doctors to limit his agenda.

The president sang with a folk music group outside the childhood home of South American independence hero Simon Bolivar. Yesterday was the anniversary of Bolivar’s birth.

Chavez said he initially hadn’t been sure he would make it in time for the celebration. He spent the past week in Cuba undergoing a first round of chemotherapy, aiming to prevent a recurrence of cancer....

Chavez flew to Cuba July 16 to receive chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer, saying he would be back in a few days. The socialist leader underwent surgery in Cuba on June 20 to remove a baseball-sized tumor.
