I didn't notice any coverage of this anniversary this year.
What I have gotten since my last Chile post:
"Violence erupts in Chile amid 2-day nationwide strike; 450 arrests made, 42 hurt" August 26, 2011|Associated Press
SANTIAGO, Chile - There was scattered violence throughout the night as Chileans demanded profound changes in the country’s heavily centralized and privatized form of government yesterday, but tens of thousands marched peacefully. More than 450 people have been arrested.
Then why emphasize the "scattered violence?"
Signals corporate media's disapproval of these protests. Not part of the agenda.
Union members, students, government workers, and Chile’s center-left opposition parties joined the nationwide two-day strike, which included four separate marches in the capital yesterday as well as similar demonstrations across the country. In many areas, families have grabbed spoons and spilled into the streets each night, participating in noisy pot-banging shows of support for the activists.
Oh, I SEE WHY! It is ALL the PEOPLE!!!
But violence also has broken out, with hooded, rock-throwing protesters confronting police, looting stores, burning cars, and setting up fiery barricades....
Yup, ALL PROTESTS have their AGENT PROVOCATEURS working for GOVERNMENT!!
The media focus on them confirms it!
While many youths, particularly in poorer neighborhoods, have been seen throwing rocks at police, it is not clear who is behind the violence.
Oh, it is CLEAR TO ME!
Government leaders accused student and union leaders of failing to control their people while activists alleged that undercover police and right-wing activists stirred up trouble.
Oh, the CHILEANS are SO SMART, and I SUPPOSE THEY WOULD BE GIVEN the HISTORY!
One of the buildings attacked overnight was the headquarters of the teachers union that is demanding that the government invest far more to guarantee free and equal quality public education....
Hmmmm, why would anyone want to attack teachers?

"STUDENT UNREST -- Students were hit by a jet of water from a riot police vehicle during a rally in Santiago yesterday to demand Chile's government make changes to the public education system. The demonstration was part of a three-month campaign calling for better quality and free education (Boston Globe September 3 2011)."
How can attention be diverted from the rebellion?
"Bodies located in crash that killed 21
SANTIAGO - Chilean officials said yesterday that they have begun recovering bodies from the crash of a military airplane that went down in the Pacific Ocean with 21 aboard. The CASA 212 plane crashed Friday afternoon after two failed attempts to land in difficult weather Officials say they believe all aboard died. Among those aboard was popular Chilean television personality Felipe Camiroaga."
Who else was on the MILITARY PLANE!!??!!
"RITES IN SANTIAGO -- An honor guard escorted the casket of Chilean Air Force officer Erwin Nunez, one of four victims recovered from the crash Friday of a military plane in a remote area of the Pacific near Robinson Crusoe Island. A search was underway yesterday for the remains of the other 17 occupants of the plane, who were all presumed dead (Boston Globe September 5 2011)."

"Cable ties Kissinger to Chile controversy" by Pete Yost, Associated Press Writer | April 10, 2010
WASHINGTON --As secretary of state, Henry Kissinger canceled a U.S. warning against carrying out international political assassinations that was to have gone to Chile and two neighboring nations just days before a former ambassador was killed by Chilean agents on Washington's Embassy Row in 1976, a newly released State Department cable shows.
Whether Kissinger played a role in blocking the delivery of the warning against assassination to the governments of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay has long been a topic of controversy.
Discovered in recent weeks by the National Security Archive, a non-profit research organization, the Sept. 16, 1976 cable is among tens of thousands of declassified State Department documents recently made available to the public.
In 1976, the South American nations of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay were engaged in a program of repression code-named Operation Condor that targeted those governments' political opponents throughout Latin America, Europe and even the United States.
A CIA PROGRAM, readers!!
Based on information from the CIA, the U.S. State Department became concerned that Condor included plans for political assassination around the world....
