"Drug probe nets 16 arrests in R.I.

A six-month undercover investigation into street-level drug dealing in Newport has led to the arrest of 16 people. Newport police announced the arrests Friday. The investigation was carried out by local narcotics officers and agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. Those arrested are suspected of being involved in the dealing of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, and prescription drugs. Most of those arrested are residents of Newport, though some are residents of Middletown or Providence."

"R.I. woman found dead in New York

A body found stuffed inside a 55-gallon drum in a New York apartment was that of a young woman who had recently moved there from Providence. WJAR-TV reported Friday that the body of Francis Alfonso Pellerano, 19, was found last weekend. Pellerano had studied at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf before moving to New York last fall to be closer to a boyfriend. Police arrived at the Harlem apartment last Saturday to investigate a report of a foul odor. The medical examiner reported that Pellerano sustained multiple stab wounds."

"R.I. representative’s husband charged with credit card fraud

The spouse of a Rhode Island state representative has been arrested and charged with stealing a credit card to rack up $720 in charges. State Police said Friday that Henry Fellela was arrested after someone reported that a credit card had been stolen from a mailbox. Fellela’s wife is state Representative Deborah Fellela, a Democrat from Johnston. Police said surveillance video showed Henry Fellela using the card while driving a car with expired registration that was issued to his wife. Authorities said the card was used 17 times at gas stations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey."

"Husband of R.I. lawmaker arrested a second time

The husband of a Rhode Island lawmaker is facing a new charge of fraudulently using a credit card and has been ordered held at the Adult Correctional Institutions. State Police Major Michael Winquist said Henry Fellela, 55, was arrested Wednesday in Cranston on a warrant issued last week out of Concord, Mass., on a charge of credit card fraud. He is the husband of Representative Deborah Fellela, Democrat of Johnston. He was charged last month with stealing a credit card on which he allegedly made $720 in charges."

"Reed praises Obama decision on Liberian refugees

US Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island is praising President Obama’s decision to grant Liberian refugees an 18-month extension of their US residency, but says the time has come to give refugees permanent status in their new nation. Reed said Obama’s move to let Liberian refugees stay in the United States until Sept. 30, 2014, is good news for the many Liberians living and working in Rhode Island. The Democrat is the author of legislation that would give refugees a path to US citizenship."
