"N.Y. police ID Baby Hope, make arrest" Associated Press, October 13, 2013
NEW YORK — Police said Saturday that they had made an arrest in the death of a child nicknamed Baby Hope, 22 years after her body was discovered in a picnic cooler.
Investigators said the girl’s 52-year-old cousin, Conrado Juarez, had admitted sexually assaulting and killing her — a dramatic turnaround in one of the city’s more notorious cold cases.
The child’s name and the circumstances of her death were a mystery for years, but last week police said that a new tip and a DNA test had allowed them to identify the child’s mother.
Police said they had interviewed the woman, and on Saturday they revealed the child’s name: Anjelica Castillo. Her naked, malnourished body was discovered July 23, 1991, beside the Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan.
It wasn’t clear whether Juarez had obtained a lawyer. Authorities are still searching for the girl’s father and several of his relatives. Investigators believe he may still be living in the city.
The police received a tip recently when they were handing out fliers in the neighborhood where the body was found.
