It was just an oxygen tank.

Authorities declared a Lawrence neighborhood safe Sunday afternoon after spending much of the morning searching an Exchange Street home after bomb-making materials were discovered there.

Police recovered a fuse, powders, and weapons from the room of a deceased man, whose mother called them after finding the items in the apartment. Authorities did not release the man’s name.

Nearby houses were evacuated during the investigation, but State Police said residents were not in danger. Methuen police helped close off streets and evacuate houses because the home was near the town line, Lieutenant Kevin Martin said.

According to State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan, it is not clear why the man had these items.

“I don’t think that we can figure that out right now,” he said, noting that it will probably be part of an investigation of the incident.

Lawrence police said they could not comment on why the man was in possession of the materials.

Police reopened the streets and declared the area safe around 2:30 p.m.
