‘‘Today is Eid,” he said, “and the Egyptian people are divided into two sides, two different thoughts, and it’s a shame because both sides are Muslims.’’

When officers responded to the home, they found Alfonso’s body, as well as her 10-year-old daughter, who was unharmed.
A post on a Facebook page identified as Medina’s says, ‘‘I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife.’’ The photo was up for more than five hours before it was removed by Facebook.
A Facebook spokeswoman said in an e-mail to the Associated Press that she could not comment on a law enforcement investigation.
Police had the area around the condo complex where the couple lived, in a suburb south of downtown Miami, taped off Thursday evening. The complex is made up of townhouses.
Neighbor Phil Eby said he did not know the couple very well but expressed surprise at the shooting.
‘‘I met him a couple of times. He seemed like a pretty nice guy,’’ Eby said. ‘‘But I don’t remember her at all.’’

Both losing candidates and three black voters have filed complaints, now being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, that City Clerk Jackie Lawhon made it more difficult for blacks to cast ballots by questioning their residency.
The candidates also allege that Lawhon abandoned her duty to remain neutral and actively campaigned for the three whites on the ballot.
‘‘If the allegations that we have are 100 percent accurate, then this election was literally stolen from us and I really feel like there should be another election,’’ said Anginita Rosier, who lost her seat on the commission by 26 votes.
Lawhon, who has served in her position since being appointed more than three decades ago, referred calls to city attorney Dan Cox. He would not comment on the specifics of the complaints but said, ‘‘I don’t think that anything was done that was out of line.’’
The allegations were made about two weeks before the US Supreme Court ruling in June that gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. That provision required several states and other jurisdictions, mostly in the South, to get federal approval before changing election procedures; opponents said that requirement was outdated because of the nation’s racial progress since the 1960s.
Preventing anyone from voting because of race remains illegal under state and federal law. But if the claims in this Southern town of fewer than 500 people are substantiated, activists are likely to seize on the case as an example of how racial discrimination at the polls has not been eradicated — and why protections like those overturned by the Supreme Court should remain in place.

Several people approached outside the grocery store said they voted but said they did not know of any problems. Even the black former mayor, Colleen Skipper-Mitchell, declined to answer questions.
Five candidates ran for three seats on the city commission. The top three vote-getters were the winners. Eddie Evans received 89 votes, Nathan Lewis 75, and Glenn Rudd 66. There were 65 ballots cast for Skipper-Mitchell and 40 for Rosier. Voters could select up to three candidates....
But while absentee ballots spiked, they did so among both whites and blacks....

FRESNO, Calif. — A wildfire outside Yosemite National Park more than tripled in size Thursday, shutting down businesses in surrounding communities and leading scores of tourists to leave the area during peak season.
The fire is one of several blazes burning in or near the nation’s national parks, and one of 50 major uncontained fires burning across the western United States.
Fire officials said the Yosemite blaze, which threatens several thousand homes, hotels, and camp buildings, had grown to more than 84 square miles and was only 2 percent contained Thursday, down from 5 percent a day earlier. Two homes and seven outbuildings have been destroyed.
While the park remains open, the blaze has caused the closure of a 4-mile stretch of State Route 120, one of three entrances into Yosemite on the west side, devastating areas that live off of park-fueled tourism.
Officials have advised voluntary evacuations of the Pine Mountain Lake community, other area residences, several organized camps, and at least two campgrounds. More homes, businesses, and hotels are threatened in nearby Groveland, a community of 600 about five miles from the fire and 25 miles from the entrance of Yosemite.
Though some remain open, many area businesses have closed and people who had vacation rental homes are canceling plans, local business owners said.
Park officials said the fire has not affected Yosemite itself, which can still be accessed via state Routes 140 and 41 from the west, as well as State Route 120 from the east.

The fire was among the top US firefighting priorities, said the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.
Fifty-one major uncontained wildfires are burning throughout the West, according to the center, including fires in California, Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. More than 19,000 firefighters were fighting the fires.
But the US Forest Service, the nation’s top wildfire-fighting agency, said Wednesday that it is running out of money to fight wildfires and is diverting $600 million from timber, recreation, and other areas to fill the gap. The agency said it had spent $967 million so far this year and was down to $50 million — typically enough to pay for just a few days of fighting fires when the nation is at its top wildfire preparedness level, which went into effect Tuesday.
There have been more than 32,000 fires this year that have burned more than 5,300 square miles.

GROVELAND, Calif. — As an intense wildfire races across the vast, picturesque Sierra forests, residents in the fire’s path are moving animals and children to safety.
Firefighters are working to keep the fire north of Yosemite National Park out of mountain communities.
The fire has moved northeast away from Groveland, where smoke gave away to blue skies Sunday. But at the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne City, the slot machines were quiet as emergency workers took over nearly all of the resort’s 148 hotel rooms....

The fire continues burning in the remote wilderness area of Yosemite, but park spokesman Tom Medena said it is edging closer to the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the source of San Francisco’s famously pure drinking water.

Despite ash falling like snowflakes on the reservoir and a thick haze of smoke limiting visibility to 100 feet, the quality of the water piped to the city is still good, said officials with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
The hydroelectric power generated for the city by the system has been interrupted by the fire, forcing the utility to spend $600,000 to buy power on the open market.
Park employees are continuing their efforts to protect two groves of giant sequoias that are unique to the region by cutting brush and setting sprinklers, Medena said.
The fire has consumed more than 209 square miles of picturesque forests. Officials estimate containment at just 7 percent.

Nearly 3,700 firefighters battled the approximately 230-square-mile blaze, the biggest wildfire on record in California’s Sierra Nevada. They reported modest progress, saying the fire was 15 percent contained.
‘‘We’re not there yet, but we’re starting to get a little bit of a handle on this thing,’’ said Lee Bentley, fire spokesman for the US Forest Service. ‘‘It’s been a real tiger. He’s been going around trying to bite its own tail, and it won’t let go but we’ll get there.’’
Utility officials monitored the clarity of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and used a massive new $4.6 billion gravity-operated pipeline system to move water quickly to reservoirs closer to the city....
At the same time, utility officials gave assurances that they have a six-month supply of water in reservoirs near the city.
So far the ash that has been raining onto the Hetch Hetchy has not sunk as far as the intake valves, which are about halfway down the 300-foot O’Shaughnessy Dam. Utility officials said that the ash is nontoxic but that the city will begin filtering water for customers if problems are detected. That could cost more.
On Monday the fire was still several miles away from the steep granite canyon where the reservoir is nestled, but several spot fires were burning closer, and firefighters were protecting hydroelectric transmission lines and other utility facilities.
‘‘Obviously we’re paying close attention to the city’s water supply,’’ said Glen Stratton, an operations chief on the fire suppression team.
Power generation at the reservoir was shut down last week so that firefighters would not be imperiled by live wires. San Francisco is buying replacement power from other sources to run City Hall and other municipal buildings.
It has been at least 17 years since fire ravaged the northernmost stretch of Yosemite that is under siege....
Meanwhile, biologists with the Forest Service are studying the effect on wildlife. Much of the area that has burned is part of the state’s winter-range deer habitat. Biologist Crispin Holland said most of the large deer herds would still be well above the fire danger.
Biologists discovered stranded Western pond turtles on national forest land near the edge of Yosemite. Their marshy meadow had burned, and the surviving creatures were huddled in the middle of the expanse in what little water remained.
‘‘We’re hoping to deliver some water to those turtles,’’ Holland said. ‘‘We might also drag some brush in to give them cover.’’
Wildlife officials were also trying to monitor at least four bald eagle nests in the fire-stricken area.

So when a storm came on Aug. 9, drenching rain in the wildfire-blackened hills below Colorado’s Pikes Peak sent a torrent of rock and mud into the town. The runoff killed 53-year-old John Collins destroyed or damaged 36 homes, and engulfed half a dozen cars.
Wildfire burn scars have spawned flash floods up and down Colorado’s Front Range and in other Western states this summer, saddling communities with millions of dollars in cleanup costs.
‘‘I’m moving out,’’ Manitou Springs resident Donna Stone said. ‘‘It’s incomprehensible to me that I’d be safe here.’’
The threat lingers years after the flames have been extinguished and the human and property losses of fire have been tallied. In New Mexico, where fires have scorched more than 285 square miles of mountain slopes this year, flash floods killed fish and washed out roads in Pecos Canyon, a popular fishing area.

Vasili, despite being second in command on the b-59, was the leader of the fleet of the four soviet subs sent. Had vasili not been present, nuclear war would have likely happened as both the captain and the political officer wanted to launch the nuclear torpedo. Vasili vehemently disagreed, arguing that since no orders had come from moscow in a long time, such a drastic action was ill-advised and the sub should surface to contact moscow. A heated argument broke out- legend, probably false- says punches were thrown. Eventually, though, vasili won the day."

The selection of Glynn, 66, of Belmont ends a 15-month search to fill the post. The Massport board of directors is expected to vote on Glynn’s appointment at its next meeting, on Sept. 20.
Glynn’s long career in public service includes stints as deputy commissioner of the state Department of Public Welfare, MBTA general manager, and the US deputy labor secretary. He served until recently as chief operating officer of Partners HealthCare, the state’s largest hospital network, which includes Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Glynn, currently a public policy lecturer at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, could not be reached for comment. Michael Angelini, the Massport board chairman, did not return calls. A spokesman for Massport declined to comment.
Glynn would replace Thomas Kinton Jr., who announced his retirement in February 2011, and left the job in June 2011, after more than 30 years at the agency. Shortly before his departure, the board was due to vote on a $22,000 increase to Kinton’s $295,000 salary; Governor Deval Patrick, who appoints the board members, blocked it.
Since then, David S. Mackey, Massport’s longtime general counsel, has served as acting chief executive.
The terms of the job offer to Glynn were not known outside a small group of Patrick administration and Massport insiders.
Recruiting a new chief executive has not been an easy process. At one point a frustrated board replaced the recruiting firm it had hired. One factor in prolonging the search may have been the salary. Patrick has made significant cuts in the compensation offered officials at several authorities, after ordering a review of pay and perks at dozens of quasi-public agencies in 2010.
The battle over Kinton’s pay raise has been widely viewed as the catalyst for his departure. When he left, he was eligible for $459,000 in unused sick time and a pension of at least $195,000 a year, fueling the controversy over excessive compensation....

Boston police arrested a North Attleborough man in Dorchester Saturday night on drunk driving charges, after the man allegedly sprayed cologne into his mouth, presumably to cover up the smell of alcohol. A gray vehicle struck a parked Boston Water and Sewer dump truck just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Dudley and Belden streets, police said. The truck driver went to the vehicle to get the driver’s information, but the driver fell asleep during their conversation, according to police reports. The truck driver told officers that he saw the man spray cologne into his mouth. When Boston police arrived, officers also saw the man spraying cologne on his body, according to a report. Officers arrested Hoi Ngo, 40, on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol."

Bush confronted when he decided to enter into a far broader war with nearly 150,000 US troops in Iraq without seeking an authorizing resolution in the United Nations. The Obama administration says that case differs sharply from its objectives in Syria.
In Iraq, Bush was explicitly seeking regime change. In this case, White House officials say, Obama is trying to enforce an international ban on chemical weapons and seeking to prevent their use in Syria, or against US allies.

Ignoring the woman’s request to be driven to the community where she lived, the driver of the vehicle drove her to Newton where he stopped on Nonantum Road outside Daly Memorial Skating Rink, according to police. There, she told police, he assaulted and raped her. After she struggled with her assailant, he threw her to the ground and drove off, she said.
Police and the Middlesex district attorney’s office are investigating the crime, but have made no arrests....

A female victim told police she was sexually assaulted by a man who gave her a ride after she tried to hail a taxi in Allston early Sunday morning, less than two weeks after a similar attack was reported in Newton.
Boston police spokeswoman Katherine Shea said Sunday night that authorities are investigating whether the attacks are related.
“We’re investigating this incident and taking into consideration the other incident,” Shea said. “We just want to make the public aware of the incident going on.”
The most recent ordeal began at about 2 a.m. Sunday when the victim, whose age was not released, sought to hail a taxi near the intersection of Linden and Pratt streets. A man driving a dark four-door, midsized sedan stopped and offered to drive her to Cambridge, police said.
The female told officers she was taken to an area she believed was near Harvard University’s campus along North Harvard Street in Allston near the Boston neighborhood’s border with Cambridge, where the driver sexually assaulted her.
Police said the vehicle was not a licensed Boston taxi.
The driver was described as an Indian man in his mid-30s, about 5-foot, 8-inches tall with a medium build, a “medium complexion” and short, cropped, dark hair and “very crooked” teeth. Police believe he was wearing a black, short-sleeved collared shirt and had a thick accent.
Meanwhile, authorities on Sunday released a description, along with a sketch, of a driver who allegedly picked up a 21-year-old woman in an unlicensed cab outside a popular bar in South Boston less than two weeks ago and drove her to an area near the Newton-Brighton line, where he raped her.
The man was described as being of Hispanic, Indian, or Middle Eastern descent, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 6 feet tall, weighing between 230 and 240 pounds, according to a statement from the Middlesex district attorney’s office.
The suspect has a muscular build, a dark complexion, buzz-cut black hair, and neatly cropped facial hair, the statement said. He was wearing a polo-style collared shirt, jeans, and dark-colored head covering.
The attack occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 6, authorities have said.
The woman said she was at the Whiskey Priest pub in the Seaport District with a friend and left at about 1:30 a.m., officials have said.
She signalled for a taxi near Seaport Boulevard and Northern Avenue and a black Lincoln livery sedan stopped and picked her up.
But the driver did not take the woman to where she wanted to go, according to the district attorney’s office. Instead, she was driven to a secluded area on state property in front of the Daly Memorial Ice Skating Rink off Nonantum Road, near the border of Newton and Brighton, where she was assaulted.
After she struggled with the man, he threw her to the ground and drove away, authorities said.
Officials said the vehicle had a software application running on a tablet or smartphone that was mounted to the dashboard and displayed a map and fare tally. But they said the vehicle was not a registered taxi and did not have a Boston taxi medallion, which includes a requirement for background checks to screen drivers with criminal records.
On Sunday night, Boston Police warned people to be vigilant and to avoid traveling alone or getting into unmarked taxi and livery cars, and to always use clearly-marked licensed cabs and livery vehicles.
Following the Aug. 6 attack, there have been renewed calls for heightened city oversight of livery vehicles operating outside the regulation of the Boston police hackney unit. And that case has also generated criticism of law enforcement officials who did not disclose the alleged rape until Friday, 10 days after it had occurred.
The lapse happened because of a jurisdictional mix-up between State Police and the Middlesex district attorney’s office, State Police spokesman David Procopio told the Globe on Friday.
He apologized for the delay, said law enforcement should have issued a public alert sooner, and promised to broadcast reports about future attacks in a more timely manner.
But in its statement Sunday, the district attorney’s office defended its decision to wait to publicize the attack because releasing information sooner could have compromised the investigation.
“It was determined that to protect the integrity of the investigation, it was in the best interest of the investigation not to release details of the assault as police were seeking to conduct interviews and gather evidence,” the statement said. “The priority of investigators has been to find the suspect by following all leads.”
Stephanie Chelf Guyotte, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, and State Police Trooper and spokesman Dustin Fitch declined to comment further Sunday afternoon.
Boston Police asked anyone with information about the attack on Sunday to call the detectives at the department’s Sexual Assault Unit at 617-343-4400.
Information can be provided anonymously by calling CrimeStoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS or by texting the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463).
Cambridge police, Harvard University Police, and Massachusetts State Police are also investigating.
