"US, Russia reach deal on Iran resolution; Further sanctions ruled out for now" by John Heilprin, Associated Press | September 27, 2008
UNITED NATIONS - The US and Russia, striking a compromise, led a new UN Security Council effort yesterday to condemn Iran's nuclear program.
The brief resolution, which includes no new sanctions, seeks to reaffirm the three previous ones, which imposed progressively tougher sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment program.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also yesterday denounced Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for calling for Israel to be wiped off the map, and said the United States would ask the Security Council to take up that issue.

The United States "will be asking that the council convene again to take up the matter of one member of the United Nations calling for the destruction of another member of the United Nations, in a way that simply should not be allowed, if you will pardon my saying so in polite company," Rice said.
