Fart Mist Finds Plenty of Financing

Ze-gen Inc. of Boston said it has raised $20 million in Series B financing.

Omar Zawawi Establishment of Oman, through one of its group companies called Waroz Holding Co., led the financing with existing investors, including Flagship Ventures of Cambridge; VantagePoint Venture Partners, which has offices in California's Silicon Valley; and the Massachusetts Technology Development Corp., Ze-gen said.

Ze-gen Inc. develops technology to convert wood debris and other solid waste into synthesis gas, or syngas - a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen used to fuel power plants.

Boston-Power Inc. said it received $55 million in funding the Westborough company will use to manufacture, market, and sell its Sonata lithium-ion battery, which Hewlett-Packard plans to start using in its notebook computers this year.

The money comes from several investors, including Foundation Asset Management, which handles assets of the Wallenberg Foundations in Sweden, and from Venrock, which has an office in Cambridge. Since its founding in 2005, Boston-Power has garnered $125 million in investor funds.

According to Boston-Power, the Sonata is a fast-charging, "environmentally sustainable" battery. Chief executive Christina Lampe-Onnerud said she hopes the company's products will one day also be used to power hybrid and electric vehicles.
