"Man held after bomb squad responds

A Hopkinton man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of planting a possible explosive device against a motor home in town, officials said. Hopkinton police said officers observed the device against the home on Downey Street at about 8:40 a.m. Area residents were evacuated, and the State Police Bomb Squad responded, the police statement said. The device was “rendered safe,’’ meaning it did not explode, State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said. Officers then obtained an arrest warrant for Michael J. Fitzgerald, 35. Police said Fitzgerald had been taken into protective custody earlier in the morning and was found to have a suspicious device on him at the Police Department. The bomb squad also rendered that device safe, the statement said. Fitzgerald was charged with one count of possession of an infernal machine. He is to be arraigned this morning in Framingham District Court.
