"347 million adults have diabetes, study finds" by Maria Cheng, Associated Press / June 26, 2011
LONDON —With numbers climbing almost everywhere, experts said the disease is no longer limited to rich countries and is now a global problem....
Anytime I see an issue framed in such a context now I cringe and instantly reject whatever agenda they are advancing.
“Diabetes may well become the defining issue of global health for the next decade,’’ said Majid Ezzati, chairman of global environmental health at Imperial College London, one of the study authors.
He noted the figures do not reflect the generations of overweight children and young adults who have yet to reach middle age. That could create a massive burden on health systems....
Still, in Britain and elsewhere in Western Europe, despite growing waistlines, there was only a slight rise in diabetes. Experts were not sure why and said there could be several reasons, including poorer detection of the disease, genetic differences, or perhaps the Europeans were better at getting heavy people to reduce their chances of developing diabetes.

"Uncooked sprouts linked to E. coli
LONDON — British officials warned consumers yesterday against eating uncooked sprouts after authorities in France linked seeds distributed by an English vendor to an E. coli outbreak near Bordeaux. France halted the sale of fenugreek, mustard, and arugula sprout seeds from British mail-order seed and plant company Thompson & Morgan after eight people were hospitalized during an E. coli outbreak."

"French E. coli outbreak may be isolated " by New York Times / June 27, 2011
BRUSSELS — French authorities said yesterday that the latest outbreak of a deadly strain of E. coli in Europe appeared to be isolated, even as EU officials discussed wider action to restrict sales of bean sprouts, the suspected cause of the outbreak....
Tests indicated that the patients were sickened by the same strain of bacteria that has killed 43 people in Germany and one in Sweden in recent weeks, said Veronique Seguy, a spokeswoman for the regional health agency in Aquitaine in southwestern France, where the outbreak occurred....
No new cases had been reported in recent days, an indication that the outbreak was an isolated event.
The talking it down is suspicious in and of itself.
Most of the infections in France have been linked to a charity event in Begles, a suburb of Bordeaux, on June 8. Most of the people who became ill recalled eating gazpacho garnished with sprouts. Sprouts were also identified as the source of a German outbreak.
Britain and Ireland were among European countries that warned consumers over the weekend against eating any raw bean sprouts or other sprouted seeds. So far the bloc has not issued any continent-wide restrictions, but specialists were scheduled to speak by telephone yesterday to discuss whether the evidence was sufficient to restrict sales of sprouts.
