Irene's Aftermath

"Outages force a trip to past; Residents resort to games, candles" September 01, 2011|By Mark Arsenault, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH - Widespread power outages across Massachusetts, which entered their fourth day yesterday, have cast whole neighborhoods back in time to the days of candles and board games, denying families their appliances and electronics and forcing them to lean on friends and their own ingenuity to stay fed, clean, and entertained....

“It’s crazy how chaotic the world becomes when you don’t have the Internet,’’ Jack Carmone, 13, said. “I don’t even know if the Red Sox won’’ Tuesday night. (Alas, he was told, they had lost to the Yankees.)

They hoped to get their electricity back in time for tonight’s New England Patriots pre-season football game...

COLRAIN - Four days after Irene unleashed its fury on the region, towns like Colrain were still reeling from the damage, and remained dazed by the storm’s ferocity....

The flood waters receded almost as quickly as they came, but not before they inundated homes and severed entire neighborhoods from the rest of town....

Emergency crews have scrambled to repair roads and deliver supplies to stranded residents in this area of rolling farmland and fields of wildflowers, and the situation has improved steadily through the week. Almost all homes have regained power, and many flooded roads are now passable....

Except that I-91 is still shut down. Did the Globe mention that?
