A roaring wildfire raced through rain-starved farm and ranchland in Central Texas on Monday, destroying nearly 500 homes during a rapid advance that was fanned in part by howling winds from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee....

The new outbreak led Gov. Rick Perry to return home to Texas, cutting short a visit to South Carolina where he was campaigning for the Republican nomination for president. He also canceled a trip to California....

BASTROP, Texas - Firefighters gained ground yesterday against one of the most destructive wildfires in Texas history as the number of destroyed homes reached almost 800, and an elite search team set out to find any victims in the smoking ruins.

Governor Rick Perry, meanwhile, resumed his presidential campaign after rushing home over the weekend to deal with the crisis. He traveled to California to meet his Republican rivals in his first nationally televised debate last night....

Smoldering hotspots remain across some 45 square miles blackened by the destructive Bastrop County blaze. But a spokesman for the Texas Forest Service says crews have been able to tame many of the big flames....
