Whacky Washington

"Mom who tried to sell baby to be freed" by ASSOCIATED PRESS October 1, 2011

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A woman who tried to sell her baby boy at a Taco Bell restaurant in southwest Washington will be freed from jail soon.

Under an agreement with Clark County prosecutors, 36-year-old Heidi Knowles pleaded guilty Thursday to reckless endangerment and was sentenced to 77 days in jail by a county judge.

The Columbian reports Knowles has already served that amount of time and will be released this week.

According to court documents, prosecutors say Knowles approached a woman in the restaurant on July 14, handed her 1-year-old boy to a woman, and offered to sell him for between $500 and $5,000. She declined and called 911.

Child Protective Services took the baby and later placed him with a relative. Court hearings on the child’s custody are pending.

"Parents charged in daughter’s death" October 1, 2011

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A Washington couple has been charged with homicide by abuse in the death of their 13-year-old daughter, who was adopted from Ethiopia.

Larry and Carri Williams of Sedro-Woolley, a city about 70 miles north of Seattle, were arrested Thursday and jailed on $500,000 bond.

Prosecutors say the girl, Hana Williams, lived in a closet and was denied meals for days at a time.

I suppose the lack of food is nothing new to an Ethiopian.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports that Carri Williams called 911 early on May 12 and reported Hana was not breathing. Williams said the girl had refused to come into the house and was found face down in the backyard with mud in her mouth.

An autopsy showed she died of hypothermia, but malnutrition and a stomach infection were contributing factors.

In July, seven remaining children were removed from the Williams home.
