"Cruise ship adrift in area pirates roam
NAIROBI - An Ital­ian cruise liner carrying more than 1,000 people was adrift with­out power in the Indian Ocean yes­ter­day af­ter a fire erupted in its generator room....

Of­ficials of the Costa Crociere cruise line say the Costa Al­legra was sta­ble and upright off the is­land nation of Seychelles, where pirates have been known to op­erate, but the ves­sel was be­ing pushed by the current.

 Captain Giorgio Moretti said dur­ing a confer­ence call last night that the fire left the ship with­out power, including for air con­dition­ing and lights.

Just six weeks ago, one of the ves­sel’s sis­ter ships, the Costa Concordia, hit a reef and capsized off Italy, killing at least 25 people. Both ships are op­erated by Costa Crociere, which is owned by the Florida-based Car­nival Corp....

NAIROBI — Helicopters ferried food, phones, and flashlights yesterday to more than 1,000 passengers and crew stuck aboard a disabled cruise ship that was being towed to the Seychelles Islands through waters prowled by pirates.

Those aboard the Costa Allegra, a sister ship of the cruise liner that capsized off Italy last month, face more stifling days and nights before the vessel docks in the tropical paradise....
