NEW YORK - Undercover NYPD officers attended meetings of liberal political groups and kept intelligence files on activists who planned protests across the nation, according to interviews and documents that show how police have used counterterrorism tactics to monitor even lawful activities.
The infiltration echoes the tactics the NYPD used in the run-up to New York’s 2004 Republican National Convention, when police monitored church groups, antiwar organizations, and environmental advocates nationwide.
That effort was revealed by The New York Times in 2007 and in an ongoing US civil rights lawsuit on how the NYPD treated convention protesters.
In April 2008, an undercover NYPD officer traveled to New Orleans for the People’s Summit, a gathering of liberal groups organized around their shared opposition to US economic policy and the effect of trade agreements between the US, Canada, and Mexico....

The money is part of a little-known grant intended to help law enforcement fight drug crimes. Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Bush and Obama administrations have provided $135 million to the New York and New Jersey region through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.
Yeah, WHO CARES WHERE THEY APPLY your TAX MONEY when it comes to TYRANNY, 'eh?
Can't use it for drugs because government intelligence agencies are the biggest drug-runners around and the banks benefit from laundered drug loot, so let's shift the money over to pursuing false-flag, intelligence-agency supervised patsy plots while spying on the populace at large.
Now about those social service cuts....
Some of that money - it is unclear exactly how much because the program has little oversight - has paid for the cars that plainclothes New York police officers used to conduct surveillance on Muslim neighborhoods. It also paid for computers that store even innocuous information about Muslim college students, mosque sermons, and social events....
In addition to the liberal/lefty threat files.
The Associated Press confirmed the use of White House money through secret police documents and interviews with current and former city and federal officials. The AP also obtained electronic documents with digital signatures indicating they were created and saved on computers funded by the grant. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy oversees the grant program.
The disclosure that the White House is at least partially paying for the wholesale surveillance of places where Muslims eat, shop, work, and pray complicates efforts by the Obama administration to stay out of the fray over New York’s controversial counterterrorism programs.

NEW YORK - Qazi Qayyoom, an imam in Queens, says he believes the New York Police Department is keeping his community safe, and if that means some Muslims are monitored, so be it.

Qayyoom and about three dozen other people attended a rally Monday held by Muslims in support of the NYPD after a series of Associated Press stories detailing the department’s secret surveillance of mosques, Muslim-owned businesses, and college campuses across the Northeast since Muslim extremists attacked the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, killing thousands of people.
The rally, held by the American Islamic Leadership Coalition outside police headquarters, illustrated a division even among the faith’s adherents about how far authorities should go in seeking to protect the nation’s largest city from terrorists.
Among the speakers was Dr. Zudhi Jasser, the narrator of “The Third Jihad,’’ a documentary about the dangers of radical Islam that the NYPD showed in the lobby of a police training area and has since disavowed.
Jasser and others said the danger is clearly coming from within the Muslim community and that it is up to other Muslims to help law enforcement stop the threat.
Yeah, well, as it turns out Muslims didn't do 9/11; Israel and her helpers in various western governments and intelligence agencies did.

NEW YORK - The New York Police Department collected information on businesses owned by second- and third-generation Americans specifically because they were Muslims, according to newly obtained secret documents. They show in the clearest terms yet that police were monitoring people based on religion, despite statements from Mayor Michael Bloomberg to the contrary.
In late 2007, plainclothes officers in the department’s secretive Demographics Unit were assigned to investigate the region’s Syrian population. Police photographed businesses and eavesdropped at lunch counters and inside grocery stores and pastry shops. The resulting document listed no threat. And though most people of Syrian heritage living in the area were Jewish, Jews were excluded from the monitoring.
That is why there isn't much of a fuss. Too bad; they likely missed some nice dancing.
“This report will focus on the smaller Muslim community,’’ the report said.
Similarly, police excluded the city’s sizable Coptic Christian population when photographing, monitoring, and eavesdropping on Egyptian businesses in 2007, according to the police files.

The Demographics Unit was conceived in secret years ago as a way to identify communities where terrorists might hide and spot potential problems early.
And find patsies for their plots!
If the plainclothes officers, known as “rakers,’’ overheard anti-American sentiment or violent rhetoric, they flagged it for follow-up investigation.
They are raking something, all right.
If police, for example, received a tip that an Egyptian terrorist was plotting an attack, investigators looking for him would have the entire community already on file. They would know where he was likely to pray, who might rent him a cheap room, where he would find a convenient Internet cafe, and where he probably would buy his groceries.
As a result, many people were put into police files, not for criminal activities but because they were part of daily life in their neighborhoods. Shopkeepers were named in police files, their ethnicities listed. Muslim college students who attended a rafting trip or discussed upcoming religious lectures on campus were cataloged. Worshipers arriving at mosques were photographed and had their license plate numbers collected by police.

The Demographics Unit is one example of how, since the 2001 terrorist attacks, the police department has transformed itself into one of the most aggressive domestic intelligence agencies in the country, operating with little oversight and in areas outside the city such as New Jersey....

Since the AP began reporting on these efforts last year, Bloomberg and the police department have offered varying explanations for the clandestine efforts.
At first, police spokesman Paul Browne denied the Demographics Unit existed.

NEW YORK - New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly challenged City Council members who want to create an inspector general to regulate the department’s surveillance of Muslims Thursday, saying his department needs no additional oversight.
What oversight?
In sometimes heated exchanges with council members at a budget hearing, Kelly defended his department’s counterterrorism surveillance program as well as another crime-fighting policy, the stopping, questioning, and frisking of people on the street.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a cop defends fascism.
“I think there’s plenty of oversight,’’ Kelly said. He cited New York’s five district attorneys, two US attorneys, a committee that investigates police corruption, the department’s own internal affairs office, and a 2003 court order that governs police surveillance.
“I don’t know what more you would want,’’ Kelly said.
Yeah, they have been doing a great job so far, sigh.
Some council members say they are deeply concerned by a series of stories by the Associated Press detailing the extent of the surveillance program, which overwhelmingly targeted Muslim ethnic groups in its hunt for suspicious activity.

Undercover police officers eavesdropped in cafes and grocery stores, infiltrated Muslim student groups and monitored the Internet activity of people as far away as Buffalo. They set up a command center in New Brunswick, N.J., without the knowledge of the FBI or local police.
They monitored people who changed their names from Arab-sounding names to more Americanized ones, created detailed catalogs of Muslim-owned businesses, and recorded the license plates of worshipers at a New Jersey mosque.
Some people whose names have appeared in the police reports are worried that such notes could damage their lives if the information were ever leaked or misused....

Tensions with Iran have increased over the country’s unwillingness to scale back its nuclear program.
