The Lash of Lynn

Think of it as an education as to the way the world works, kids.

"Lynn officials add lesson to 29 teens’ suspensions" February 28, 2012|By Akilah Johnson

LYNN - A videotaped afterschool brawl in which two girls battle while onlookers egg them on has resulted in suspensions for 29 Lynn English High School students, possible criminal charges for the two combatants - and term papers for all involved.

The first part has the feel of a War Daily, don't it?

The subject of the paper? The 1964 murder of Catherine “Kitty’’ Genovese, whose shouts for help went unanswered as she was stabbed to death in New York City. The thesis: the consequences of apathy.

“We felt not only should it be a discipline approach to this, but also a learning approach, so they don’t just walk away and say, ‘Oh, got a day off from school,’ ’’ said Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy, who is also chairwoman of the city’s School Committee.

She said she and the school principal, Thomas Strangie, want students to “learn a little bit about what happens when we stand by and take no action when we should be taking action to help another human being.’’

Why did Palestinians just leap into my mind?

***************************

As school let out yesterday, students discussed suspensions and the fight as a whole with a mix of teenage cynicism and irritation. Some thought the negative attention stained the school’s reputation. Others responded with little more than shoulder-shrugging indifference....

I love you kids when you are confronted by the corporate media!!!

FLASHBACK:

"29 students to face discipline after fight in Lynn that was posted on Youtube" by Amanda Cedrone, Globe Correspondent

Two Lynn students involved in a fight that was recorded and posted on YouTube have been identified and will face punishment Monday, along with 27 other students who stood by and cheered them on, officials said.

Lynn Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy said that the school superintendent, principal, school attendance officer, and officials from the Lynn police met Thursday to determine an appropriate punishment for those involved.

The students will be addressed Monday after homeroom and informed of their punishment, Kennedy said.

“We are going to inform all of them of what we expect of them,” she said. She declined to elaborate on how the students will be disciplined because she did not want them to find out through the media....

The 8-minute video clip titled “Lynn english high school fights” was posted on YouTube last Saturday, and showed two female students brawling with each other at the Cook Street Playground while their peers looked on.

(Ah, memories of getting my bell rung and doing a bit of ringing, too)

The video is no longer available on the website....

Neither is the information from my printed piece that tells you the incident occurred.

While not endorsing fighting or violence of any kind, I DO HAVE A PROBLEM with the SCHOOL INSINUATING ITSELF into an incident that did NOT OCCUR on SCHOOL TIME or GROUNDS!  I'm just wondering WHERE DOES the REACH of AUTHORITY and STATE END?
