An armed home invasion Monday put Somerville’s Winter Hill neighborhood on edge after one suspect fled the scene and hid inside a nearby housing complex, police said.
The kindergarten-through-eighth grade Arthur D. Healey School and preschools in the area were placed in lock-down as police sought one of two men who fled from the scene on Derby Street and hid inside a Somerville Housing Authority building on Memorial Road. He was later arrested, said Thomas Pasquarello, Somerville’s police chief.
Anthony Paulino, 19, listed as homeless, and Derrick Paul, 22, his address unconfirmed by police, face charges of armed home invasion and resisting arrest. Paulino is also charged with armed robbery, two counts of receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a license.
One of the men was arrested almost immediately after police responded to a reported robbery in progress at 60 Derby St. shortly after 10:30 a.m. But the other fled on foot, police said.
Officers went door to door at 15-C Memorial Road, searching for the suspect, who was captured without incident at about 12:15 p.m., Pasquarello said. Handguns were found near both suspects. Deputy Police Chief Paul Upton identified Paul and Paulino as the suspects in the home invasion, but did not say which one allegedly fled to the housing complex.
The scene was tense on Memorial Road, as more than a dozen police vehicles swarmed the area, a State Police helicopter hovered, and officers patrolled the street with high-powered rifles and German shepherds.
Marianne Grandmont, a resident of 15-B Memorial Road, said she went outside to see what was going on and was ordered by a police officer to go inside and lock her doors.
“It was scary,” she said. “My kids go to the Healey School.”
The housing authority complex is equipped with video surveillance, which will be reviewed by police, Pasquarello said. The Healey School was taken out of lock-down when the second suspect was arrested. One police officer suffered a minor shoulder injury during the arrests, Upton said.
Paul and Paulino are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Somerville District Court.
